The laws have now changed on microchipping. Your puppy MUST be microchipped by 8 weeks of age.

Puppies in most circumstances must not leave the mother until at least 8 weeks of age. So the microchipping would fall on the breeder.

You need to go into the regulations themselves but Regulation 11 specifies what are referred to as "authorised persons". They include police and people appointed by the local authority who can order the dog to be chipped within 21 days, impose a fine, or seize the dog.

Would your vets be aware of this to? surely they would be the best option at reinforcing it as the puppies will be having regular vet checks at this age.

All my dogs get chipped but I can't see how anyone can enforce it. They have a law that says all dogs have to be microchipped and nothing happens to the people who haven't chipped their dogs.

The guidance for vets is to make clients aware of their responsibilities regarding chipping but they aren't there to police it.

I have 2 9 week old puppies and they have been to the vets twice, she has never mentioned about microchipping them ASAP as you all are making out. She said come back in a couple of weeks and then we will see about doing the microchipping. So the vet is being illegal or am i? Also I'm not a breeder**

So if there not microchipped in another 3 weeks it means that Doris could be taken is this what you mean @JoanneF ?

It is more likely you would be served with an order to have her chipped, or fined, but in theory she could be seized.

They are having there injections in another week and I'm now worried that the vets will take Doris off me. could this happen?

well, since legally U could have SOLD those pups at 8-WO, i'd say that the vet is wrong --- in not chipping them by day 56, or even earlier, during a prior appt.

I'm sorry to disappoint U, but the person who owns a bitch when she whelps is "the breeder" of that litter, & is indeed A BREEDER; that's the definition. U joined the club; whether U planned the breeding & chose the male, found the dog stray, took her in, & later discovered she was already pregnant, or she ran off one day, & a month later, she was sporting teats - the details are immaterial.
She's Ur dog; she had a litter while U owned her, ergo, U are a breeder. Like it or lump it!

Unless you have a scary vet this sort of approach seems heavy handed with a young pup, but they might certainly try and encourage you to do this. If your dog runs off before you've had her chipped might be a different story There are tons of advantages of chipping and not too much of a downside - costs a bit but worth it? - so maybe ring before the next visit and get chipping booked in as part of the visit?
