:( One of our whippies has had an accident this afternoon whilst running, We've just got back from the vets, and it looks like she has snapped both tendons either side of her wrist joint in her front leg, we've been told this is not good and she will always be lame they dont usually heal, in a few days once the swelling has gone down she is having a cast put on it.

After that, we'll just have to wait and see, as there is an option to have the joint plated but then she will loose all movement in it, but in the meantime, i have read on other threads that whippets have leg protectors, this maybe a nessecity for her to have on when walking to help support her, Please could anyone tell us how supportive are they? and does anyone know where we can get some from?

Would be grateful for any info at all..

No advice sorry

But I hope you manage to get this sorted somehow and I hope she's not in too much pain. :huggles:

Thats not good news. Cant say ive ever used legs protectors but they sound like a good idea. I hope your whippet will be ok. :luck:

Also forgot to say (were all a bit shocked),if anyone else has had this injury,

we'd be really interested how your whippet got on,

we're feeling pretty devasted at the moment, its bad enough seeing

her in pain, and maybe not able to run the rest of her life is awful.

:( Sorry to hear the bad news. I hope your girl makes a swift recovery :luck: :luck: :huggles:

our Indys had both front legs brocken and dameged to the tendones on both front legs not at the same time one after another shes now only 18 months andallthough her legs do fly about a bit when shes off lead she runs and plays with ninny and has a lovly time. I did use vet rap to support her wrist at first every time she was off lead but now she seams fine.

good luck with your whippy

If you can get in touch with a greyhound vet in your area, do try, as sometimes they have the experience of this sort of injury that your vet may not have. My local greyhound vet repaired a friend's whippets tendons, and their vet had said she would be flatfooted for the rest of her life - she was back in the showring 6 months later.

Very best of luck with her :luck: :luck: :luck:

Ouch! I'm really sorry to hear your sad news. I will be keeping fingers crossed for you all & hope that she makes a quick recovery :luck: :luck: :luck:

Gentle cuddles from all of us here :huggles:

Sounds like a greyhound expert could help.

Don't have any advice though but just want to send best wishes from all of us for a speedy recovery.

One of our whippies snapped the tendon in her toe and it's always fully extended now (not curled). She is a bit lame but it doesn't stop her running about.

:luck: :luck: :luck: :huggles: for your whippie.

So sorry to hear your bad news :( I hope she is not in too much pain, and that she makes a good recovery :luck:

Sorry to hear about your bad news :( Where abouts are you? As Fiona says perhaps a grey vet can help, or if you are in travelling distance of Taunton I'd recommend our Vet 100%

Holly has no tendons at all in one foot so it is very flat. This was caused by a plate being left in her leg for 9 years - the tendons rubbed on the plate rather than a smooth bone and it caused irreverable damage. I've now had 2 dogs with plated legs and we opted to have the plates off each time.

Holly had her plates on both front legs for 9 years at a guess (she was a rescue so that's our best guess from what we know of her history) - she never ran and always seemed in pain, as well as sleeping a lot. Since she had the 2nd plate off last month she has been a totally different dog to the old lady we've had for the last 2 years and we are so pleased that we did it. Given our experience with leia & Holls I'd never leave a plate on on whippie or lurcher.

Leia also has tendon damage in the leg she broke - same reason, rubbing over rough bone and one snapped a few months back - by the time I got to our new vet it was too late to operate but the leg has repaired quite well and she has been free running for approx 4 weeks again now. I accept that I have to be careful where I let her run now - ie never in the woods and I cant lure course her anymore, but she still has a good quality of life.

:luck: to you.

Oh no, so sorry to hear your news, hope she heals really quickly and isn't in too much pain, sending lots of :luck: :luck: :luck: and :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Who has the injury, Rachel ?

Really sorry to hear your bad news :( Which one of your Whippets is it?

Sending her :huggles: poor thing.

Hi Rae,

Thankyou for that, we were reluctant to have the plating done as it would then have no movement at all, and her leg would then just be a prop as such, But that would have been after the cast comes off, and that wont go on until Monday tuesday. She is in quite a state, as she can put no weight on it. We've been told so far that its not looking good that she'll ever be able to walk properly again, We are hopeful she will be able to get about, once this initial injury and pain have settled down, at the moment her leg is swollen and very bruised.

We will find a greyhound vet, to get a 2nd opinion, i have been given a couple of phone numbers which i will call. But will get the cast on first so she has some stability with it.

Thankyou for letting us know how yours have made such a good recovery, it gives us hope she will to.

Rachel

Thankyou everyone for your best wishes for our Tegan

Really appreciate, any help right now, Thankyou

Oh Rachel,I am so sorry to hear this  I have no advice I am afraid but I really hope she makes a full recovery and in the meantime is'nt in too much pain, poor Tegan. Lots of hugs to her and I hope something can be done to sort it out, hopefully when the swelling goes down and the vet can have a good look at it,they maight find that it is'nt as bad as they first thought??

Certainly a Greyhound vet seems the way to go if you can find one. We always use a race-horse vet for our horses for any leg injuries as he is more used to looking at and dealing with them.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on. :luck: :luck: :huggles: :huggles:
