Just thought id put a post on here to ask if any other k9ers have outdoor runs for their whips. :)

Reason i ask, is that sometimes when we go out ( sometimes only for a couple of hours) we get back to find puddles on the floor in kitchen ( where we put the dogs when go out) and OH is getting really racked off with smelling pee in the kitchen! :b

we don't know who is doing it and so don't know who to tell off and can't really anyway unless catch them in the 'act'

so..........OH has had the idea to build an outdoor run with a large kennel area at one end and possibly rig up heating too.

whilst i think during summer this may be quite nice for them to be out im not 100% keen on the idea of having the whips outside ( we have two whips and a EBT) even though OH insists he will make it really warm and comfy, and they wont be out much really - just when we go out for a while and then they will be back inside as normal.

I just wondered if any other k9ers have outdoor enclosures and how their dogs are with it? also, Im concerned that it will make their toileting worse when they are inside because they will get used to going when they feel like it outside and will think they can do the same when they are inside with us

Sorry if this post is abit of a ramble  any suggestions or thoughts welcome

Not for me I'm afraid, mine are indoor dogs and that's it!!

What about crating your dogs when you leave them for a while instead of letting them have the run of the kitchen?? I had a similar problem with Django, it seems to be an insecurity thing with him but he is fine now I have my wrought iron divider but he is also quite happy to go in a crate either on his own or with one of the other dogs.

i think its much of a "horses for courses" thingy ! i prefer my dogs outside tho i enjoy them bth indoors providing they dont start messing about. if i was you id get them used to both worlds. my kennels are heated with 2 heat bulbs on a dimmer switch that i run indoors. i also got a remote digital thermometer so i can cotrol the heat from indoors via the dimmer switch. my advice is "best of both worlds" for your dogs. get the peeing problem sorted first tho.

j :luck: hn

I have been pondering exactly the same thing- we don't have room at the moment, but we are planning to move and I was wondering whether to build one at the new place.

One of my main concerns is the security. I really don't think I could cope if they were stolen.

Another reason I was quite keen is that both Nana and Josephine have been out for a large part of their lives and both can get quite claustrphobic indoors especially in the winter when the doors are shut.

I recon thats what most people have to consider. Is it worth leaving them outside while you go out if there is a chace of them getting stolen, especially with all the dog napping stories you hear these days i have a very enclosed garden (other gardens at the sides and back and a gate at the other there is no way of getting in unless you leap over loads of fences hedges etc or break the gate down (we have very nosey neighbours so the chance of this is very unlikely) and live in a quiet street yet i wouldny leave molly outside unsuppervised for very long just incase.

i suppose you have to consider the area and how easy it would be to get in and out of the garden!

I must admit ive pondered with this idea myself as living with 4 indoors at times can be a bit hectic especially when coming home with shopping & having to contend with them all wondering what treats are in the bags etc, then with the summer coming it'll be better for them rather being indoors with windows closed etc... All of mine are fully house trained so it wasnt for this reason, to be honest there is always some1 at home so theres little chance of any1 getting to mine...

I suppose you dont know for the best till you've tried it....

If it's just for the wee problem, why not use a crate?? At only 12 weeks Holly has never 'gone' while we've been out and im sure that's because she's crated. They don't like to wee in their own beds. Frankie is the same. However, with our Dobermann, who we didn't crate train - she took a lot longer to house train.

I have one of the most expensive garden sheds in the world :(

When I moved to my current address I had a kennels area built with a run but it has never been used. My main concern is noise as this is a very quiet neighbourhood and a genuine fear of theft of the dogs.

I agree, our terrier took ages to house train, then I discovered crates and have never had a problem with the 4 Whippets o:)

my whip was outdoor bred and i have a wooden and brick run with raised sleeping area with heat lamp over 1 sleeping deck with carpet underneath , foam bed and duvet , 2nd deck has carpet and convection heater to side for extra warmth, you must make sure it is draught free, i also have 2 igs that are quite happy with this arrangement , thay all have time indoors but that is their area. it is warm in winter and cool in summer, easily keep clean too. This is not everyones ideal but we all have our own opinions. if you wish for photos of the contruction pm me and ill be happy to help

I think it would be great for them to be able to run in and out in the summer while I'm at work(when I'm not they do it anyway) but I'd be too frightened they'd get nicked (w00t) :sweating:

Your set up sounds really cosy Tanya

Most of my gang go out when Im out and at night , I have double glazed windows :- " , radiators on the wall , breeze block kennels , that were originally built for my racing Greyhounds.

I could if I wanted have at least 6 of the whips in one kennel they are that big , they have a raised bed and chip board panalling around the bedding area for warmth too. blankets , quilts and vet bed are used for sleeping on They have plenty of room for toilet indoors , and I have a `flap` that they could use to go outside , but to be honest i rarely leave it open as we have foxes locally which could set the dogs barking and annoy neighbours  , I think anyone would find it really hard to get in and out of my garden but you can never be too careful. They are always happy to `go to down the garden ` when ever I say the words and watch my routine and know before me when to `go down the garden` :huggles:

sounds lovely like having their own house! :))

i have no problem going out and doing the dogs in winter coz its warmer in there then my kitchen! lol! also i escape from the the kids! did take a long time to be done right but def worth it, with the dif levels the dogs choose how warm they want to be too, the convection heater is on a timer from 7 til 7 and after that back to heat lamp, i keep that on all year round but only at night in summer. you have seen the dogs so you can see they are happy and healthy using this method too.

sounds great...love to see the pics

i will just go and dust and hoover and post them to you kaz! sadly the curtains dont match they only had tiger print! :- "

joking aside i will pm you some pics as i think it is of very good and sound contruction and better than most i have seen on the market, my dad had it built and it was i think £700 including setting it up and the cement/concrete base ? it drains off to a slight slope so washes down easy and can be entered by either the side sleeping door or end of run door, has double bolts so can be padlocked if needed too , that is not something i would do tho in case of fire , snall arched areas under sleep decks to add further sleeping beds, well i like it , the dogs like it so if they are happy so am i !

I couldnt put mine in a run but it wouldnt suite them but I think you have to do whats best for you and your dogs. If i did enghe runs for 8 I would have no garden left

For the smell of pee in the kitchen give your floors a good mopping with very hot water and bio washing powder it shifts the smell brill. make sure you get in all the nooks and crannys with it

Thank you all for the replies, i didnt expect the thread to be so popular! Some very interesting opinions and ideas

I think i should explain abit more about the toileting issue though ......

well, all were pretty well trained untill OH and i had a separation for 6months and he kept the two older dogs and i had puppy with me. During this time the two dogs OH had were left alone sometimes for longer than acceptable really and as a result they messed in the kitchen.

Anyway, we did get back together but now they seem to think its acceptable to do their business when they feel like it , instead of holding it. But saying that if we are in they usaully cry at door but if we nip out or even overnite when we are in bed they toilet in the kitchen! :x

Another concern i have is that young whip ( 9months) was almost toilet trained when i took her away but now im worried shes 'copying' the older two. Do you think its possible for dogs to copy? OH seems to think putting them out when we are out is the answer but i dont agree, i think they will think they can 'go' when they like all the more  :(

I have kennels for my lot :) , but only 2 of them like the kennels, Ricky and Gizmo. I put them out about 11am and bring them both in about 5pm. I need to go out about every 2 hours to let Gizmo into the garden as he wont pee in his run ;) . My kennels have a heater on (still) and they have a radio too. The other 2 Tam and Robbie, hate the kennel, so they never go into it. TheY full time house dogs  .

If you dont cage your dog's,,try it as they wont pee in thier beds. I cage all my little pups and all of mine are fully house trained by 12 weeks,,,only had one who was not,,she pee'd whenever she wanted too
