Showing my ignorance here again :- " , but if a dog is predominantly white with a blue brindle eye and ear patch, would he be classed as a parti even though he has no other patches on his body.

If he is not a parti, what would he be described as i.e white with a blue brindle patch??!!

Can't wait for the replies.....I will try not to feel totally moronic :b

Thanks

Tracy

I would have said parti as that is what my Fynn is like. I am happy to be corrected though

Technically, I would also call it a brindle particolour (say for registration purposes) but probably if I saw him in the flesh I would describe it as white with a brindle eye patch & ear!! The same as I would qualify what shade of brindle if talking with someone i.e. blue, red (or tiger), fawn, etc whereas on a registration form I would just put 'brindle'

They are 4 types of the gene which controls the distribution of white over the dogs body.

Solid - colour all over (little bit of white on chest and tips of toes)

White trim - white on the face, legs, chest and tip of the tail - less than 20% white

Particolour - more than 20%, but less than 80%white- generaly has some body patches

Extreme white - totaly white or more than 80% white

I have listed them here in order of dominance;

The solid is dominant over all the other colours. The extreme white being recesive to all the other colours.

There are other factors in determining the amount of white on dogs and it may not be always possible to determine if dog with, for example 80% of white is particolour or extreme white. Looking at his relatives would be necessary. But as your puppy does not have any colour on his body he ought to be classified as an extreme white.

Alfie's down as Gold Brindle  :teehee: I assume he should be brindle with white trim?

I had one of my pup's registered as a white and red brindle parti as he was more white than brindle ........but at the end of the day he was just a brindle parti colour :D

Does the suncream thing apply to any parts that are white Las Vegas( not the tiny bits)because Spry has quite a bit of white especially on her head? she is down as a brown brindle and white but she has lightened up a lot and seems more of a fawn colour brindle now

Yes they are getting on better, very much on Archie's terms and I still have to stop very rough stuff.

I would love to be enlightened with regard to sun cream, any-one any advice?

It's the opposite with us Joanna everthing seems to be on Sprys terms I think I have too pushover whips

Well Alfie is addicted to heat like most Whippets :- " and will lay in direct sunlight for hours until he is literally panting and we have to move him indoors

When it really hots up I tend to rub sun cream into his white patches and his ears because they are very thin and easily 'cooked'?! So he gets his ears, muzzle, neck, tummy, willy and veg (w00t) smothered with sun cream :b If he was completely white then I imagine I would cream him up even further? :b Whippets have so little fur and then having white fur aswell I'm sure they would get burnt easily sunbathing or spending prolonged periods out in the summer sun :sweating:

That would be fun going into superdrug and asking what factor they recommend for white whippets

They'd probably ask you to wait in the corner while they phoned the funny farm

SUNBURN -The bit you have to watch most is just behind his nose, where the hair is very sparse especially if the skin is pink. Also edges of ears and pink eye rims. I would use zinc cream which gives best protection and you can buy them in pink ank green, as well as white. With coloured ones you know when it's not there anymore.

As far as colour description on dog's papers goes; because in whippet the ALL colours are permissable many breeders just do not care enough to bother about technically correct description.

Really glad I read this thead cause I must admit would never have thought to put sunscreen on Jilly. :sweating: Thank goodness for k9

On Jillys papers it says shes fawn with white trim but she has a small white patch on her back so does this make her parti- coloured. :)

Thanks for asking question Tracy
