Really glad I read this thead cause I must admit would never have thought to put sunscreen on Jilly. :sweating:   Thank goodness for k9  On Jillys papers it says shes fawn with white trim but she has a small white patch on her back so does this make her parti- coloured.  :)

Thanks for asking question Tracy

Madelaine has a not so small white patch, but she is definately blue brindle with white trim.

willy and veg (w00t) smothered with sun cream :b If he was completely white then I imagine I would cream him up even further? :b

Willy and Veg.......I  this expression. Cannot believe that I have ever heard of it before!!

The thread has been very interesting and I appreciate all of the comments, especially those re sun cream. I wouldn't have asked, only I felt I needed to know what colour my new dog was  Dogless in December and now have TWO whips, I cannot believe it. I'm in heaven and so is Ollie. He has a new bestest friend and doesn't have to be left on his own any more for those two hours. Mind you, they still have a human watchdog for the next two weeks to make sure they are okay, but it's all looking very very good so far

Summer is rather an expensive time of year if you're all white 8)

Bess with her green zinc. (w00t) :teehee: (w00t)

I didnt even know till K9 that sunscreen for dogs was needed either :(

My first little dog was mainly white all those years ago - anyway she did live to almost 17 years without any major sun damage.

Here she is Lady Jane

SUNBURN -The bit you have to watch most is just behind his nose, where the hair is very sparse  especially if the skin is pink.
I would use zinc cream which gives best protection and you can buy them in pink ank green, as well as white.  With coloured ones you know when it's not there anymore.
I would think about doing tummy's as well. Tesa use to sunbake on the concrete driveway. We had to have a couple of operations for tumors to be removed from just under her front leg and the sunbaking was a contributing factor.

I agree, waterproof children's sunscreen is what I use. Sunscreens designed for children are less likely to be irritating(as long as they are perfume free). They don't like it when you put it on.. but skin cancer is even more unpleasant. I also try to limit the sunbathing in direct sunlight.

As far as colour description on dog's papers goes; because in whippet the ALL colours are permissable many breeders just do not care enough to bother about technically correct description.

I dont' think it's just that though. I think part of it is that colours change so much between puppyhood and adult hood that registering a whippet as a red-fawn brindle, and you might actually end up with a blue-fawn brindle. How can you then prove that it's yours - the pedigree is now wrong....

Whereas just putting Brindle with white trim (as ours is) covers the correct colour. Teya started off quite light - almost a silver fawny brindle. She's definitely blue brindling with almost a red-fawn base now - but she could have also ended up a very light champagne base colour - how do you know?? The more specific you are the more room there is for error as the pup grows and changes.

That is true, the base fawn colour can change a lot. Fawn or brindle puppy is born with lot of dark hair and the colour clears over time. That is why i would describe the base colour as fawn (regardless of shade), and then specify colour of markings (mask and brindling- blue or full pigment). The white should not be problematic as that is pretty obvious at birth, even if the shape of ,say .the white blaze does change.

I do agree that the colour should be described in generic, but acurate terms.

The Kennel Club would think we had gone mad if we started trying to write War & Peace on the colour of the puppy in the little box provided!!! I only ever put the colour in very generic terms either, for example, brindle/white trim or brindle particolour

Our CCC will only allow the basics now. No matter how specific you try to be - black masked fawn particolour will come back as either fawn particolor or even just particolour.

Here in Victoria our VCA is pretty good, although the space provided on the registration application is not very big, I managed to sqeeze in "blue brindle particolour" and "blue brindle white trim" - in tiny little letters :D . So far they have always put on the certificate exactly what I written down.

I wish our local council was like that. My Bess, who I tried to register as blue fawn particolour, has on her council registration "tan"!!! Really!!!...she is beautiful soft apricot particolour with blue mask.
