Somewhat damning and (probably) biased I understand

oh thanks for the reminder.........i hate forgotten about it

Cheers for that must get OH to record it for me i read a bit about it on the teletext news on BBC looks as though the dog show industry is getting the blame so i think it will be very biased :(

its only on in england  wev got river city instead, stupid scottish tv

im not up on breeding, so wont pretend i know anything about it......but some of the stuff i have just seen has really shocked me !!

I find it difficult to believe that a Cavalier carrying the gene for that terrible disease has been used exstensively at stud, with the owner knowing the problem.

That really is the pits and the owner, the KC must now know who she is, they should not register anything by that particular dog.

Well i think it's fare to say they have finally picked up on what many of us have known about the KC for a long time - Good on em!!!

What a joke the Kennel Club and their pathetic "Breed Standard" have turned some poor breeds into - my heart broke for them.

Biggest thing for me was the selfish breeders & show judges who are quite happy with their heads in the sand. The Ridgeback breeder wants f***ing shooting

Have to say, NEVER will i own a KC registered dog :*

Ahhhh but the money from registering the 36 litters so far sired by that dog wouldn't have landed in their pockets.

Well, what did people think of it?

I personally feel it was a pretty honest documentary and I hope it will enlighten many pet owners and future prospective ones. With regards to the breed standard, I think the problem lies with how an individual perceives the written word. What one person considers short, long, round etc. I think it would be better if breed standards used diagrams and photographs to demonstrate their standards and I also feel that judges should be judging other breeds rather than their own breed. This would prevent face judging and peer pressure that a certain trait is desirable when it obviously is an abnormality.

Society has made us more ''civilised'' but as a result a lot of dogs have detracted away from their original purpose and have retained their place in society purely on aesthetics, many of which have been deemed aesthetic through ill perception of the original breed standards. I've always found it odd that breed standards have been revised and re-written, purely this fact alone shows that the breed standard is trying to meet the dogs that are winning rather than breeding dogs that meet the original standard and thus purpose it was originally intended for.

I was involved in showing dogs for 20+ years of my life, having gone into racing non-ped dogs, I do have to say that I would never purchase a pedigree dog ever again. I also think there's a lot to be said of breeders (like the breeder of my non-ped) who choose to hunt down a legendary dog that possessed great talent as a racer rather than go to one of the top ten stud dogs on the racing circuit. This is no insult to these dogs but it is forethought like this that prevents gene pools from becoming smaller and I condone the breeder for having such forethought within her breeding.

What would be the point of judges not judging their own breed? That is just stupid, so are the remarks about never buying a pedigree dog. Where in earth do you think your lurchers came from? Pedigree crosses. You make the crosses so don't slam all pedigree dogs!

Whippets and greyhounds are one of the oldest sight hound breeds that have not been mucked about with. I know the show greyhound is a totally different dog from the racing coursing ones, but<<<<< they are healthy.

I do agree the KC don't stop people registering, it is sad, they have the knowledge about this ruddy cavalier breeder and should stop her from registering stock by her dog, and should stop her from showing, unless she castrates him!

I am ashamed to have ever bought a kc registered dog and to have put so much faith in an organisation which has shown itself to be nothing if not barbaric.... I sat watching my dogs ( pug and gsd )throughout this program feeling guilty..I was aware of certain defects within the breeds when I chose to get them but never thought that the KC was condoning practices that enhance these defects.

They should be reported to the RSPCA under their new welfare acts, these breeders would be liable to prosecution.

lol, yet again posting the same thing!

Folk should check out the dog genome project, their currently mapping the dogs DNA and coming up with genetic diseases all the time as they trawl their way through each breed of dog. :(

The article below I came across on a dog genetics website, all I can say is when you have such disturbing individuals in such an influencing position then no wonder the pedigree dog is so screwed up.

Beginning around 1870, however, with the establishment of kennel clubs in Britain and the United States, closed breeding books were introduced in the name of developing and maintaining "purebred" animals. A dog could be registered as a Vizsla only if both of its parents were registered as Vizslas. There was more than a little racist thinking behind all of this; writings about animal breeding from the late 1800s and early 1900s are full of exhortations to eliminate "weaklings" and to invigorate the race by maintaining the "purity" of its "blood lines." Look up any bibliography of dog books and the name Leon Fradley Whitney is sure to appear. Whitney was the author of many standard works, including The Complete Book of Dog Care (still in print), This Is the Cocker Spaniel, Bloodhounds and How to Train Them, and How to Breed Dogs. What you won't find in a dog bibliography is some other Whitney works, including The Case for Sterilization, a paean to eugenics published in 1934. It was such a definitive treatment that the author received a letter of appreciation from no less an authority on the subject than Adolf Hitler. (Whitney in turn publicly hailed Hitler's "great statesmanship" in ordering the sterilization of the feeble-minded and the insane. In an unpublished autobiography written four decades later Whitney still defended his stance, maintaining that "no ruler ever before had had the courage or the knowledge to put sterilization to work." He allowed, however, that in the 1930s he had not been aware "what a vile human being" Hitler was.)

I recall attending a 'breed standard' meeting a few years ago to discus changes to the whippet standard. It seemed to me that an extraordinary length of time was wasted discussing what were acceptable colours for a whippets nose (apparently Spooky’s pale brown nose was a complete no-no), and also the ‘outrageous’ trait of ‘flying ears’ (I seem to remember someone rightly saying that whippets don’t run on their heads). Never once was general health mentioned. I don’t know what was the outcome of the meeting, as I became so fed-up with all the nit-picking that I didn’t follow it up.

As pointed out in the program, if you look back at photographs from the 1920s 30s and 40s, the shape of show whippets has completely changed. I wonder if it's for the better?

Ha, off my chest now. That feels better.

Because when you see breeders in a breed stating that a defect is an attribute then they're clearly biased in their views.

What pedigree dogs exactly are used in the breeding of lurchers?

i have owned various breeds of dog since i was a child....two of them were kc registered....and both suffered with all sorts of ailments....all the others have been non kc registered and [touch wood]...none of them have suffered with any problems!!

sooo

i will definately never own a kc registered dog again...especially after watching the pompus twats on the programme, try and lightly dismiss their actions....WRONG!!!!

i am deeply distressed and upset after watching this!!!
