Lovely pics.

I'd love to help the birds but we have 6 cats so it's not fair to tempt the birds in just to get eaten :(

We have started taking fat balls into the park & hanging them on the trees in there instead where it's safer :)

Ive got 3 cats too JT

but the food is well out of reach....and my cats are not keen on all this snow...

My seed feeder is kept full, plenty of peanuts, fat blocks and cocoa nuts with fat. Dried meal worms, any apples that have gone soft. Soaked and crumbled whole grain bread and so on.

I get rewarded by blue tits, coal tits, great tits, long tailed tits, nuthatches, chaffinches, dunnocks, lesser spotted wood peckers. black birds, robins, one solitary thrush! Gold finches, green finches, no sparrows for some reason. It's a busy place my front garden.

Some lovely pictures there Janis :)

I havnt had a nuthatch in my garden, although I have seen them in the village...although do get the long tailed tits, dunnock, woodpeckers, green finches, siskins, thrushes, doves, and loads of sparrows here still . :)

oo and forgot about the wrens..Im still trying to capture him on camera.

I forgot the wrens, how could I they let you know when they are around. :)

Great pics Janis. We have one little robin who comes and sits near the coconut half. I feel so sorry for him as he looks really lonely and sits there for ages. :( But at least he is getting something to eat.

Gorgeous pics , especially the robin :D

I have been feeding the birds three times a day and also giving them water which they really appreciate :D

I have two cats too but they will hardly go out the door in this weather ;)

Thanks for the reminding us all. Our garden has been full of birds grateful for the food. For the first time we managed to spot a Black Cap. Although there are goldfinches around us they have not visited the garden for years but are now back for the niger seed. Will be out to re-stock the table in a minute.

Im feeding the birds too, made a clearing on the garage roof for the bigger birds too.

we have a nuthatch that keeps visiting and lots of sparrows here too, i once had a robin that would feed from my hand but he hasnt come back this year :(

Lovely pictures, I love the little robin, its so cute

I wish I knew how to tempt birds into our back yard, and if anyone has any advice, I really would appreciate it.

We have an enclosed yard, with very high walls - no trees, though a couple of small (very young) shrubs and I have plants in hanging baskets and tubs etc, but I think that, because our walls are so high, birds just fly past us (we have our permanent gulls on the roof, they've been there about 12 years now but I don't know whether they would deter small birds). I have to say I don't feed the gulls and don't encourage them either but they seem to have moved in for good and I know they can live up to 30 years old and, I think, pair for life.

Occasionally in summer, we've seen a female blackbird on our fence and she did fly into the yard a few times. And occasionally a sparrow has been in. I have hung up some suet balls and a container with wild bird seed in - I am hopeful that a bird has used the feeder because there are some "small bird" droppings around it, and I do keep a bowl of water out for the birds (out of the dogs' way). I just feel that most birds don't actually come into our yard at all!! The bird food doesn't seem to be getting eaten very quickly at all. And if there's anything else I could/should be doing, I'd like people's suggestions. It's been so cold this winter and it must be so difficult for the birds.

Wilfred....have you a seed container to put mixed seed in....seed draws a variety of different birds. You could also try

a few different types of feeder...flat ones...with a tray.....feeders with hoods....hanging feeders..etc. This should attract finches, siskins etc

Blackbirds tend to like dried fuit....whereas the tits...love the nuts, and fats, suet feeders.

My mam only has a walled yard at the back of her house grantedf with lower walls, she gets all sorts of birds attracted in, simply because

she puts out an assortment of different foods and has different feeders too.

Try this site CJD Birdfoods...I order a lot online here...and you also will get a free book and there is lots of advice on attracting birds to your garden/yard.

Thank you very much for that, Janis, I really do appreciate it.

I will order that book today! And I do feel encouraged by what you say about your mam's garden and attracting lots of birds to feed there.

Thank you!

Hi

Only just read your thread

I love feeding the birds. Feeding preparation in our house includes our pup, 2 ferrets and the birds!

A few years ago, unfortunately, I was off work for a few weeks and used to sit and watch the birds feeding, and was eventually rewarded with a Robin feeding from my hand :)

Have lots of different visitors (nothing exotic, but dont mind) even a Crow (Clarissa) to the bird table. It's important, as you said, especially in harsh conditions

Diane

I feed all year round, and up the type of feed available from November to Feb. When we first moved here we had a lowish hedge around the front garden and no birds!

Now the hedge is 8' tall, and over the years the tree sparrows have made it their home and we now have dozens! The back garden is like a twitchers diary and have regular bull finch pairs and even 2 hawfinch ;) Just recently we have even been visited by redwings & fieldfare.

Birds are wonderful to watch, but have not been as lucky as you foggy, with our robin!
