Took the whippies to the golf course as usual today & approaching the road i could hear a dog barking & yelping.

My 2 were on leads so didn't worry, guessed it was some dogs playing.

As i approached the road i saw an estate police car marked "dog Section" with a policeman sitting in waiting with the back open.

I could still hear yelping & barking so stopped & waited for a few minutes.

Finally another policeman came into sight from across the grass approaching the car.

He had a GSD on a choke chain & lead & what i saw appalled me.

He was yanking this poor dog around yelling "Stay" at the top of his voice BUT was rough handling it so badly the poor dog was yelping in pain every time he yanked the choke chain.

He then commanded it to sit & it didnt so he hung it in mid air by the choke chain whilst it was thrashing around 4 feet off the ground, he let it drop to the ground & again told it to "sit". The poor dog was gasping for breath & seemed unable to move & he then bashed it on the head!

At this point i'd had enough & started to approach the road to him. Seeing me he went to the back of the car, opened a cage door & physically slung the cowering dog in & slammed the back shut.

By this time i was at the car so said "Excuse me, but i dont beleive there is any call to handle or treat a dog the way i have just seen you do, to hang it in mid air, i would like to take your number please"

With that he pushed passed me, said "Mind your own business" got in the car laughing with his mate & sped off!

I wish i had of had a pen to take the registration number BUT had nothing with me.

I was sickened & appalled by what i had seen & i am sorry for all of you who are about to shout "there's good & bad in all" there may well be BUT i would NEVER let the police have a dog of mine & i think this whole thing with the police having dogs really needs to be looked into. :(

I was going to come on the thread (not having read it ) to defend the police but i am  with what you have seen and would urge you to report it as soon as possible IN WRITTING to the district commander of your police force

Include a description location time and date, internally they will know who they are

Good luck and keep us informed

Please please please, report him to your local police force, say where and when you saw him, a description of him if you are able to remember what he looked like.

In 1998 members of Essex police force were found guilty of ill treatment to dogs: I've posted a quote from "This is Essex" website archives:

Three found guilty of police dog cruelty
From the archive, first published Thursday 5th Nov 1998.

A police sergeant and two constables were today found guilty of cruelly ill-treating dogs at the end of a three-week trial.

A stipendiary magistrate at Chelmsford acquitted a police inspector of cruelty charges following the death of a police dog at the Sandon dog training centre.

All four defendants had denied charges under the 1911 Protection of Animals Act.

The proseuciton had alleged that dogs were hanged by choke chains and kicked repeatedly - one later died of a ruptured liver.

Inspector Graham Curtis - who was acquitted - had pleaded not guilty to three counts of cruelty.

Sgt Andrew White denied seven charges, instructor PC Kenneth Boorman denied six charges and instructor PC Stephen Hopkins denied one charge.

Converted for the new archive on 19 November 2001. Some images and formatting may have been lost in the conversion.

Not only is the PC "Dog Handler" that you saw, guilty of ill treating his dog, he will also bring other dog handlers into disrepute.

And it IS your business, it is everyone's business as caring citizens and tax payers.

What does he think - that because he wears a uniform and is in charge of a dog, that he is somehow above the law? Does he think he is "training" that dog? Like hell he is.

I am so annoyed. What an arrogant little worm that man is. He doesn't deserve to hide behind his uniform.

That is disgusting behaviour... perhaps you should still report to your local station but i doubt anything would be done about it unfortunately...

If you do report it please keep us informed with the outcome...

There is no perhaps about it, it should be reported imediatly

You need a reply within 14 days

obviously not a man ,if he needs to take his anger and aggression out on a defenceless dog, poor thing hope its ok.

He is a cruel   who needs to be reported.

Please please write a letter or visit your local police station and tell them everything you told us and hopefully they will know who he was and sort him out.

If that's what you've seen you should report it because it's disgusting. As someone else said, it brings the whole police into disrepute and gives us all a bad name. All the dog handlers i know care passionately about the dogs, and that is why they've chosen to work in that field. It is a much sought after role and idiots like the man you met today should not be allowed to do it. Lots of the handlers have their dogs living inside as family pets despite them actually meant to be kept outdoors in kennels.

This is just another example of the tiny minority giving everyone else a bad name and it makes me sick

string him by the neck and see how he feels, i know where i would rather string him by for doing that too that poor dog   sorry for being a bit strong minded but i cant stand cruel people  . keep us posted on things. :luck: :luck:

Report them,,this is appalling

Wish someone would yank him with a chain round his neck and hold it for him to hang

And to push you aside   Who the hell do they think they are

please report this person he must not be alowed to get away with it he odviously knows hes doing wrong but thinks hes above the law he needs showing that hes not. The traner at our dog class is an ex police dog gandler and he would be appaled at this tretment aswell. wather this person has a uniform or not dose not allter the fact he is a job. There are a limated number of dogs and and if he was on duty at the time if you give a full discrition of him and the dog they will fine him dont just report it to your local sation though report it to your area headquaters and go right to the top in a colourd envalped adresses to the top person it look like a privat letter then and it less liky to be intersepted but a secratury or someone sweeping it under the carpet. he needs stoping for the dogs sake

I'm not sure of where to write to? We have a main police station in the town centre & like a sub police station in our small village which is only open at certain times.

Maybe the one in the main town would be best?

Thing is i see the police most mornings about 6-7am they bring their dogs to the same part as the golf course as me & most always say hello or stop to laugh at the IG's barking, maybe i should have a word with one of them when i see them in the week?

They all seem pretty nice & their dogs are well trained & they seem genuinely fond of them.

I have never seen this guy over there before, only young maybe 26-27 but not one of the "usuals" that i see.

I just hope the poor dog doesn't live with him :(

Don't write. Phone up the number you have to use to report an incident and tell the operator you wish to make a complaint about an officer. The policy in my force is for a supervisory officer to phone the complainant back asap - usually within an hour or two. The matter is taken from there. If you phone and a log is made stating you wish to make a complaint, something will have to be done. I wouldn't bother writing.

That's horrid

Please do report it.

Yes, do report it. If you are on friendly terms with some of the other dog handlers it surely wouldnt hurt to mention it to them. They may be appalled by this as you are but just unaware of it. If a member of public behaved like this, they would be reported, so whats the difference??

Jok, i only said about writting as it leaves a paper trail and it has to be answered within a certain time limit...(that what we do in our force)

But you are right, ringing and make a complant about an officer will be handled quicker....

The job, as you have said, is VERY hard to get into, and can have a 5 year waiting list, so i am really an unable to understand why he treated this dog like this...

I have never see or heard of a handler mistreatinmg his dog, where is work......

If you have no luck getting a response reporting it through the normal channels then go to the main switch board and ask to be put through to the Dog section direct. The only good thing about the dog sections are that they are quite small so identifying this person will be very easy especially as he is not one of the normal handlers you see.

No good dog handler will see a dog mistreated, and a frightened dog is a dangerous dog.

You have no real option but to follow this through really for the sake of the dog and future dogs this person may get to handle.

Good luck and let me know if you need a hand with getting phone numbers :luck:

Have to agree with everyone else he must be reported so something can be done about the evil b*****d
