Hi, just looking for a bit of advice and reassurance that we are doing OK

Have had Kendall for 5 days now. When we first go to bed at 11pm he is now crying for abut 5 mins then settles down till about 4.30-5 when he cries but is desperate for a wee. We take him out being careful not to fuss him and then straight back in his crate - he cries again for about 5-10 mins hen settles again. just wondering how do you know when they can go through the night so the getting up does not become habit?

Also, when going out he cries initially but settles within a few mins and when you get back is asleep. However - if we are in the house eg upstairs and he can hear us, or 1st thing in the morning when getting dressed he cries constantly till we go to him, even if we just pop to the loo he cries as he knows we are there. Doing want him to get too clingy to us. We can't wait for him to stop in these instances as he doesn't!!

We are purposely not fussing him before we go out, when we get back and other times when we are in the house. Any ideas or is this normal puppy behaviour that he will outgrow. Keen to get everything right as want a well tuned puppy!

Thanks

sounds like kendalls doing really well in the short time youve had him :huggles: .

ive never crated mine so could be different to you,but i have always had to get up with mine through the night to let them out otherwise im gauranteed a puddle or two in the morning and mine range from 5 years old to 8 months old

so dont know if its different for folk that crate overnight.

also when we get up through the night and in the morning, ive one that will bark and bark until we get down to them, but hes just started doing this and i dont know why  and can be very annoying, hes 2 almost

im sure kendall will settle fully in time

I think it sounds like you are doing really well with Kendall .

I have never got up during the night unless someone is ill , has diarrhoea etc .

My dogs range from 6 months to 15 years . By the time Kendall is about 12 weeks he should be able to go through the night . As for him being clingy , I think that just gets less over time . My poodle pup was terribly clingy but now aged 6months she is getting much better :D

My two sleep from about 11 to 6.30 without a wee - which I am amazed about as they are only just coming up to 11 weeks - it might make a difference that there are two of them so can comfort each other if they wake in the night and don't really need to go out. I leave paper in their crate 'just in case' and they used this at first but now would rather wait. They DO still try to have sneaky wees in the house during the day though if we are not watching like hawks, though most of the time they will stand at the back door to go out. They do seem to learn a lot from each other, though- when one learned to go to the back door, the other copied.

I must say I never thought I'd crate train a dog but read so much on here about the benefit that I thought I'd give it a go. I'm absolutley converted (for night times at least).

It sounds like Kendall is doing really well after so little time.

BTW mine have a cuddly dinosaur thing to sleep with, which really seems to comfort them, and have a warm hot water bottle inside a thick upholstery cushion cover. I also cover the crate on top and three sides with my bargain 1.77 fleeces (from ASDA) which makes it cosy. It does really help having two because they don't cry when we leave the room - they are more likely to find a piece of furniture to eat... I have read that when you come back into the room, bang the door first -this startles them into a few seconds of silence and then you can walk in without them associating whining with getting you back.

my girls spent the first 6weeks getting up during the night for a wee (somtimes twice)

but eventualy they just sleep right through.

i dont think id worry to much about it becoming a habbt as im pretty sure he will just naturaly sleep longer the longer he can hold it in.

our girls are crated, so they have never messed the crate (well the first night we had a wee puddle) but now they are 9months they would quite happily sleep from 10pm till at least 10am -_- and thats me pestering them to get up lol.

we never make a fuss when putting them in the crate to go out, but when we come back im realy bad for making a fuss, telling them what good girls they are for staying peacfull while we were out :huggles: :huggles:

when ever OH comes home from work he makes a big fuss over them. actually we make a bg fuss over them when every we can. and i think they are well adjusted girls who sleep all night and can be left during the day (although the longest they have ever been left was 4hours) so i think making a fuss is a good thing lol.

although i think you are right not to make to much of a fuss at night when you want him to go back to his bed

i think if your really struggling maybe a friend to keep him company (w00t) :- "

or if you fill his crate with soft cuddly toys so he doesnt feel quite so lonely, that might help.

good luck :luck: im sure he will be fine and sleeping longer in no time at all

I think Kendall is doing fine - he's still only 11 weeks remember. We now crate Kiah, Finlay and Lucy together and dont hear anything from them until they hear me getting up in the morning when Lucy will start to wine. I dont get up to them in the night - I usually get up at 6 and Lucy goes straight out for a very long wee!!

Dont worry about the wining, he will gradually stop this as he grows.

Enjoy him while he is a pup, they change so quickly, at least you are getting a reasonble amount of shut-eye at the moment.

Dont hesitate to ring me if you if you need any more help.

For his age it sound's to me like Kendall is doing

really well

Zana has been coming to bed with me since her

third night here :b I take her up @ 10 to 10.30

and we get up @ 4.30 to 5. She snuggles down

in my bed and thats her for the night.

I crate the 3 of them together when there is no-

one in the house and she has a whine but soon

settles :))

She's always the first to go when i put them out

side. She never does anything in the living room

but has the odd accident in the kitchen near the

back door so i can't complain.

I think they are are a very clever litter

Hi, he did really well last night and went 11-5.40am, then settled back down till 7.10 when we got him up! He only had a little whine at bedtime.

When I got in this morning after been out for an hour I opened his crate and he stayed in his crate while I was in the garden, then stayed downstairs on his own for about 5 mins without whining too. He also didn't whine when I went out later. Seems to be getting better every day!

He is on a mad one at the moment - tearing round full speed. :D

Kendall sounds brilliant!! I think you are doing really well with him

After all, they have very small bladders at this young age and can't be expected to go for hours on end between wees

I have always had mine in bed with us and they have slept through the night from day one. The only time accidents happen is if I don't ensure they have a weepoo last thing at night, around 11ish (and that means forcing them to go out in the rain   )

Jinny always wakes me in the morning up with a high pitched "time to go out" bark at around 6.30-7ish and the others get up when I get up

I'd say you and he are doing fine.

Though we have never crated our two we did much the same as you are

Great news here! Kendall slept from 11pm to 7.10 am this morning - when our alarm went off. No wee in the early hours, just a very long one when he went out!! He is being a monkey for going for his last wee though - he says it is too cold and we are really bad making him go outside when he is all snuggly and warm. He also settles straight down at night now, no crying at all, and also settles really well when I go out.

He had been getting better every night but bought him new bed yesterday that is so soft don't think he can get out of it  He definitly loves his home comforts. When on the sofa he knocks over a cushion so he can lie on it to make it softer!!

He has taken to stealing shoes at the moment and hiding them in the cats bed - maybe he is tring to get her into trouble.

Sounds like he doing really well  All the best with him :huggles: :huggles:

Hi - we have Otis crate trained - it was a bit of a necessity with 6 (sigh yes) 6 cats living in our house. I have two orientals which we arranged to bring into our house hold and 4 rescue kittens who are now two years old - we couldn't bring ourselves to part with any of them.

Otis was from a litter of 10 and was very lonely for the first couple of weeks. On reading through all the literature on crate training that I have found they do say if you can to keep the crate in your bedroom for the first week or so it is more comforting for your puppy. We couldnt do this so I slept out by his crate on a spare bed for a few nights until he settled in. I think for him the reassurance of having someone there really worked - if he woke up and cried he went out for a pit stop then came straight back to bed and settled once he knew I was there.

I am just watching him know suggled up in his crate with his blankeys piled up over him and he is too cute. Keep doing what you are doing - at one point I thought it would never work with Otis - I always say go to bed as I am putting him in and now at bed time I just say go to bed and he tucks himself in.

He is still fast asleep when the alarm goes off and I have to open his crate up and tell him to go outside! I am sure he would stay in there all day if he could.

He has a crate in my 4wd too and as soon as he pops in the car he curls up in his crate and goes to sleep.

As much as I could and would have Otis in bed - he wouldnt sleep on the top he is such a sneak he would burrow under the covers and give me no peace!
