OK, I'm going to ask this question cos I honestly don't know the answer :wacko:

I have been an iggie owner for a few years now, I have never bred a litter of any breed of dog and I have no intention of doing so, in fact, my girls are spayed as I also have entire male whippets, and I would never, ever want to run the risk of my precious girls having 'secret meetings' with my naughty lads :sweating: o

So, the question is this - why do some breeders sell bitches for more than dogs? :blink:

I know of breeders in other breeds who will sell a dog for less if it has an undesended testicle, as they know that the new owner will have to fork out money at a later date to have it removed, or will sell a pup cheaper than the others if it doesn't meet the breed standard in a significant way - my brother in law got his dog much cheaper than the others cos it only had one eye! He wanted one with 2 but my niece had fallen in love with 'One Eye' so thats the one they got! (w00t)

But I don't understand why bitches sell for more?

I've read this very carefully before posting, I can't see that it breaks any board rules - I'm an iggie owner, I'm a member, I'm not quoting or pointing at anyone, and I'm always keen to learn what others think, so I'm hoping that so people will at least post some replies

Something I have always wondered too.

Having only bred one litter of whippets; all of whom received the same careful upbringing, they were all sold for the same price. :thumbsup:

I don't understand either, most non ped JRs sell the same price for dogs as bitches, and working sheepdogs.

When I first started nobody wanted bitches they all wanted dogs, the price was the same as well.

I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE BUY TO BREED FROM A BITCH, BUT THE SMALL DIFFERENCE IN PRICE WOULDN'T NECESSARILY PUT OFF AN UNSCRUPULOUS FUTURE 'BREEDER'.

He is my brother in law's tibetan terrier, his name is Dylan but I call him Dill Pickles, after the baby in Rugrats :b Alan was a bit peed off to be paying out any money for a one eyed dog, but my sister in law fell for Dylan too, so he was out voted :lol:

Actually, I hadn't thought of that, I can see why males would cost more, as racing dogs tend to be 'disposable' than some other breeds - they are almost exclusively bought for a purpose - to race! I'm sure that seasons and hormones would just get in the way :-

Edited to say, I know that not everyone who buys a greyhound sees it as 'disposable'

Unfortunately the answers plain & simple,people who breed to make money know that a bitch puppy can be more valuable to

someone than a male as the bitch can produce a few litters & theoretically be a "nice little earner"

A male(unshown or worked & in a pet home) is less likely to make as much money in stud fees!!!

& of course this goes on in virtually all breeds.

When I went to get my first whippet, [iwent from south London to Hemelhemstead on the train with my daughter who was in a push chair]

I wanted a blue, when I got there I had the choice of two, a solid blue with one eye!!!!!! She damaged it playing, or a white and blue, I bought the white and blue for 8 guineas!!!!!!! Could have had the one eyed one for 5 gunieas.

Strange, they were both sweet, but the one I bought, Meg, my first whippet was a dear little dog, so intelligent and quick to learn.

For those who don't know a guinea was one pound and one shilling, or now one pound and five new pence!

it also seems to be supply and demamd ,it seems the majority of people who ring up to enquire about a litter will ask for a bitch .even if they never intend to breed .i currently have a lurcher litter and a prospective owner wanted to know why i wasnt charging extra for the girls!!!!!

Eight pounds and eight shillings - what would you get for that nowadays? Not much eh? My first whippet cost me a tenner in 1976, best £10 I ever spent :thumbsup:

yes of course they are because a male can race 356 days a year where as us girlies have to have a break when in season ( or they used to ) So , you can get more running out of a dog

In the litter I got mine from the dogs and bitches were the same price - I could've got a dog cheaper elsewhere but this was a local litter that we could visit weekly and could see how the dogs were being reared, spend plenty of time with their dam and owner and this meant more to me than getting a cheap dog somewhere else. It worked out ok in the end anyway because the breeder and I got on really well and when I said we would love to take two dogs, she knocked a lot off the price because she wanted them somewhere local and with someone who would love them forever. Probably helped we wanted two dogs and not bitches but that was personal choice as all but one of the dogs we had when I was growing up were males.

I saw loads of ads when I was looking for a litter and nearly every one had the dogs for a least a hundred pounds less than the bitches - I just assumed it was to do with potential breeding revenue but as someone else said, if some unscrupulous breeder reckons on making 400 quid a pup on an average sized litter, the extra 100 quid is nothing to them.

I think some breeders charge more for bitches because they are more in demand .

None of the breeders I have bought pups from charged more for tthe bitches than dogs .

But we did get our whippet Scout at a reduced price as she was too small (w00t)

I think you are right about them being more in demand - I saw Ros and Grover's litter at 5 weeks old and two of the girls had already been reserved, whereas one boy was still waiting at 12 weeks (he was bloody gorgeous brindle as well, I'd have had three at once if it hadn't been for sensible hubby :- )

It does seem that even when not breeding, many people prefer bitches - might be worth starting a thread on why people picked the sex of dog they did?

I was under the impretion it was the demand factor,

i think bitches seem to be what most people want for one reason or another, so if you up the price it may make people consider a dog????

it was my OH who wanted a bitch, as thats what his family have always had.

but after reading all the posts about how boys are so much more affectionate, i would love a little dog pup to add to our family :wub: :wub: :wub:

(oh and on another note, i have no idea if their was a difference in price for ruby and stars little as it was never advertised and we only looked at the girls :b )

I personally would never charge a different price depending on the sex. The same love, sweat and tears goes into raising each and everyone of them - doesn't make a difference whether its a dog or bitch, or if going as a show potential or pet only.
