When I took Raffy to the vets last week about the cyst between his toes I mentioned that I thought he was having a problem with his teeth. He is constantly scratching the side of his face & rubs his head on the floor or along the chairs. I've had a look in his mouth & thought I could see a slight hole at the top of one of his molars. The vet confirmed this so he's got to go in tomorrow for a dental.

When he was castrated he had a fit coming out of the anaesthetic so I've got to make sure they don't use the same type(ketamine) tomorrow. I really hope he'll be o.k. with a different one but I can't help being worried. I wish I could stay with him & will be counting the hours till I can go & bring him home again.

Best of luck tomorrow, got everything crossed that all goes well! :luck: :luck: :luck: :huggles:

Hope everything goes ok today :luck: Freeway has just had 10 teeth removed poor boy !

That's really strange cos Raffy has also had 10 (w00t) teeth out & 4 of them were the insisors at the bottom. Isn't that odd

Yesterday when I went to get him he looked so sad & wobbly, his face was all bloody & his eyes were all glazed. I felt so sorry for him. He whimpered & did this really mournful howwwllllllllll all the way home. I tucked him up on the settee but he kept trying to jump onto the windowledge (his fave place) I had to pin him down on my knee in the end in case he fell off & hurt himself.

He is back to his old self today but when it was hot earlier, he was panting & his tongue just pokes out through the big gap in his teeth :p

I feel so guilty about all this, I knew he had a small cavity in one of the molars but the front ones looked absolutely fine. I didn't really take it in at the time but am going to ask the vet for more details when he goes back for his check up on Monday. I can't believe that his teeth could have been so bad without me noticing. I've always been really vigilant with all the dogs teeth, oral logic & plaque off etc.

The only thing I can think is that as he was fending for himself at 4-5 months & obviously didn't get the nutrients he needed, maybe this affected the developement of his permanent teeth.

Hebe is almost 8 & her teeth look o.k.( but then I thought his did too) & Scrumpy isn't 2 yet so hers are fine. Poor Rafferty is only 6 and looks like a really old neglected mutt now :(

I just hope that he feels a lot better now as he must have been so uncomfortable if they were as bad as they obviously were.

On the bright side his pre-op bloods were all fine so at least everything else is working o.k.

Oh, and my bank account is £210 lighter too

Poor Rafferty and poor you.

Don't feel guilty about his teeth. We all know you do the very best for your dogs and it's not down to neglect on your part that he needed these teeth removed.

:huggles:

Give him a huge hug from me please. Even if he's near toothless, I bet he's still adorable. ;)

Pleased to hear he is now more himself. :huggles:

I think with teeth, it's just like humans, some just have better teeth than others. Freeway is just coming up 8 and is my first dog to lose teeth so young. Like with yours, they all get cleaned and checked, but at least I can say Freeways insissors needed to come out, the gums had receded and the teeth were loose.

poor raffy.and poor freeway too.hope they are both feeling a lot better now :huggles:

Poor dogs - hope they feel better soon :luck: :luck: I hate it after Ive had one out never mind 10 poor things. (w00t)

Rafferty is well & truly back to normal now, he is still on soft food only for another few days but managed to suck a dog biscuit earlier today when it fell out of my pocket & he snaffled it up.

I'm giving him arnica to help with the bruising & usually he can clamp his mouth shut & make it really difficult for me to give them to him.

But now..... he has a very convenient gap along the front so I can just pop the small pillules straight in :- " Poor Raffy.

I've got to take him back on Monday so will get some more details about the state of his gnashers & why they had to come out. If it was due to some sort of illness then I may be able to put an insurance claim in as regular dentals aren't covered.

glad hes got over his op well  if it was gum disease or something then hopefully youll be able to claim the costs back.let us know what the vet says on monday.any pics of the toothless wonder?bet he gives a nasty suck now! :D

Well Kris, I hope you've had your tea, here he is in all his gummy glory. Look how nice & white the remaining ones are now.

Ooooo I can see right up your nose :b

doesn't look like much disease there, or is that because he's had them cleaned whilst asleep ?

glad he's back to normal :huggles:

lol!ive just finished my tea! (w00t) actually his teeth look in very good condition to me. what did the vet say?
