I'm afraid not all dogs are created with just one manual...sometimes you have to use what ever kind to the dog method works.. bribery AND distraction too!

I like to think about it as a partnership -.we don't always agree but at the end of the day we are together

I just watched one of the videos where 'aggressive' JRT was introduced to the larger dog.
The larger dog's body language wasn't confident what so ever and he didn't seem to be happy to meet and greet and yet it was forced to close contact with the terrier.
And that terrier didn't look particularly aggressive neither...slightly over confident with its manner (typical terrier) but it should not have been brought to meet the other dog in so careless manner...being dragged about from its lead. Neither person handled their dogs appropriately! If that is what they are 'teaching' then....huh!

When will people stop referring to dogs "testing" their"leaders" ? Based on seriously flawed & now debunked studies on captive wolves in man made packs.
Wolves are not dogs & dogs are not wolves" there are 1,000s of years of domestication & selective breeding between wolves & dogs.
Few if any dogs live like wild wolves, ie in family groups consisting of the parents & their direct offspring from several annual litters.
Professor Dave Mech, is a world authority on wolves & their behaviours & has admitted his theory of dominance behaviour in wolves was totally wrong & that there are no Alpha leaders in wolf or dog "packs"

In all my life with dogs, although we have had the odd 'pack leader' (always by brain power and personality). They have only ever controlled our other dogs they have never tried to dominate a human.

Oh, Jasper tried to control me all right - he was so scared of me leaving him, even if I was just going to go upstairs for a wee back when he wasn't meant to do stairs, that the moment I put my pen down while working, he'd get in my face and growl at me to stop me getting up. He also used to use menaces to try to stop me getting out of bed at night for a pee, after hearing some rowdy partygoers outside and presumably deciding I'd only be safe if I stayed in the bedroom.

Buuut, he was a bit 'special', and it was no more to do with leadership than a clingy child trying to stop his mum leaving him on his first day at school. It was just a stressed-out slightly deranged dog trying to control his environment (of which I was a part) as the only way he could think of being able to cope. I did have to be firm with him, but I also had to help him with his insecurities which were at the base of his behaviours.

coco, sorry can’t agree, dogs will test , will challenge, we accept that and will train, or challenge them , we all have different thoughts , I don’t want or accept a dog to challenge me, love my dogs but respect is a must, you do your thing and me mine ,all methods are winnable to the beholder,
