Excuse my ignorance in this matter; I'm aware that there are certain clinical tests that can be performed on breeding animals to test for infections etc. prior to mating & that in an ideal world, we should all be considering having them done. However, as a dirty bitch owner, is there anything that I could be doing husbandary wise to further safeguard the dog against any nasties? Or should it really be essential that we get our animals sexual health checked out before letting them mate perfect strangers? We humans wouldnt do it in this day & age, and I'm wondering what would the legal situation be if your animal was to damage somebody elses, possibly on a permanant basis, should their dog have to be neutered as a result?

update on Sam is that his nuts are back to normal size and the vets happy that the infection has been dealt with and is more than happy that he is now a clean lad that will be ready to resume his normal functions in a couple of weeks.

Boothros, it's funny you ask that as most of the greyhound stud owners insist that a bitch is swobbed and checked for any infections before the stud dog is allowed to mate them, some studs even insist on artificial insemination to ensure a stud doesnt catch anything and to ensure he doesnt get strained ect whils mating a bitch.

the big question is if you wanted to use a stud dog and the owner insisted on a vet taking a swob and checking for any infection would you be happy to pay to have it done, at the end of the day it would benifit the bitch's owner as well as theyd be sure their bitch didnt have any infections ect?.

the bitch that gave sam the infection had a litter 2 years ago to a differant dog so the chances are she had got her infection 2 years ago from the previous stud dog? now from what the bloke said the previous stud dog was a very well used stud amungst the working lads (rabbiting ect) so how many bitch's are walking around carrying this infection ready to pass it on to the next stud dog they visit?.

(Although I must say i'd never heard of the previous stud dog in question or its owner even though he'd told the bitch's owner hed raced KC whippets for 20+ years and had some of the best dogs in the country  )

In principle I dont think I'd mind paying, (definitly preferable than being sued!) but at what is already a very pricey time, I shudder to think what a vet would charge for such a test. Presumably, it would would be wise for both parties to have their dogs tested, particularly if one of the dogs has been used before, but as both parties would be at an advantage from the results, who do you think should bear the cost for either or both of the dogs? This is a somewhat delicate matter, as I would hate to offend someone by asking them to get their dog tested, thus suggesting that I dont trust their word, or like the idea of where their dog has 'been', but on the other hand, the safe guarding of my bitch is paramount & this is something that I must seriously think about. I would love to hear of anyone elses experiences of this sort of problem, as while Ive always been aware that it is an issue, there are always so many successful matings & pregnancies shown on here, many to popular dogs that seem to be trouble free, that its been a bit of an eye opener to read Sams story Mark.
