TODAY's UPDATE...
Okay ... (this is going to feel like a confession on this site, and after the recent advice!)
Today my husband and I sat down and had a chat about going to visit whippet breeders etc, but my husband, and my parents too, weren't on for it.... we decided to go on a positive note with the kids to see the RSPCA pup (terrier cross... and I use that in the loosest terms!)
It is a cute pup - quite shy, polite, gentle and loving - licked everyone's hands, no jumping up, only barked once at a passing dog (territorial?!). The husband and the boys seemed chilled about him - I think a more in-your-face dog wouldn't have got past them.
Only down side for me was he wouldn't fetch our ball (but that's a Golden Retriever owner for you!)
We have decided to go for it!
We are marketing it loosely to the kids as a foster-type situation (this isn't unusual for them as my parents have previously fostered RSPCA dogs). My husband feels there will be a 80-90% chance of success (which to be honest is probably about the best I can hope for!).
We have named him * Billy * and will be going to collect him later this week after he has been neutered. He kind of looks like a leggy all-blond Cairn terrier with a longer nose!
Having met him twice I'm feeling pretty positive.
I'll let you know how it goes. (I may even try a photo, but I'm none too technical!)
Thankyou all so much for your advice and help. I'm sorry it hasn't turned out to be a whippet - I know you'll all be disappointed - can I still be an honorary whippet forum-er?
Cheers, Cazzzz
