Should We Get A Whippet?

TODAY's UPDATE...

Okay ... (this is going to feel like a confession on this site, and after the recent advice!)

Today my husband and I sat down and had a chat about going to visit whippet breeders etc, but my husband, and my parents too, weren't on for it.... we decided to go on a positive note with the kids to see the RSPCA pup (terrier cross... and I use that in the loosest terms!)

It is a cute pup - quite shy, polite, gentle and loving - licked everyone's hands, no jumping up, only barked once at a passing dog (territorial?!). The husband and the boys seemed chilled about him - I think a more in-your-face dog wouldn't have got past them.

Only down side for me was he wouldn't fetch our ball (but that's a Golden Retriever owner for you!)

We have decided to go for it!

We are marketing it loosely to the kids as a foster-type situation (this isn't unusual for them as my parents have previously fostered RSPCA dogs). My husband feels there will be a 80-90% chance of success (which to be honest is probably about the best I can hope for!).

We have named him * Billy * and will be going to collect him later this week after he has been neutered. He kind of looks like a leggy all-blond Cairn terrier with a longer nose!

Having met him twice I'm feeling pretty positive.

I'll let you know how it goes. (I may even try a photo, but I'm none too technical!)

Thankyou all so much for your advice and help. I'm sorry it hasn't turned out to be a whippet - I know you'll all be disappointed - can I still be an honorary whippet forum-er?

Cheers, Cazzzz

im glad everything seens to be working out,

please do post a photo of billy

and you never know if your husband takes to billy, in a few years you may find your back looking for a whippet. (w00t)

there are a few members on here with out whippets so you are more thann welcome :huggles: :huggles:

good luck with billy :luck: :luck:

 dogs can be trained to fetch. If you have fostered dogs before, why dont you keep fostering untill the right dog comes along instead of adopting straight away. This little mite is in rescue, please make sure if you do decide to adopt him that you are ALL ready for the commitment of keeping this dog for the rest of his life. Its not fair on any dog to take him home with the thought that if he becomes too much trouble you can just pass him on to someone else. Good luck :luck:

Good luck with little Billy. :luck: :luck: When deciding to bring a dog into the family, it is so important that everyone takes part in the decision, so I'm sure you have made the right choice for you and all your family.

Perhaps, one day, when your OH is more used to having a dog, maybe your second dog could be a Whippet. :- " I feel it is good to have two dogs as they are usually such good company for each other, and watching two interacting together is so rewarding.

When I decided to get a Whippet puppy (we already had Bobby our Collie X) I'm pretty certain a whippet would not really have been my OH's choice of breed, but nowadays he often says he wouldn't have any other breed. :huggles:
