Hello everybody!! Just reading all this has brought more tears to my eyes (relief this time!). Thank you all so much for your positive thoughts, I am sure they helped because even though I haven't been on K9 I didn't have the same gut feeling I had about Sophie that I had when I lost Aoife (DON'T ASK!) but I what got to me was that I just couldn't believe it was all happening again. I know what you will all say now though, one's unfortunate ............. two is just plain careless!! I can joke now but it was a nightmare. A special thanks to Wendy (Millie) and Tracy (TC) for their help and support, it was much appreciated.

And now for the tale ........................

Out walking with my friend late afternoon yesterday, the Whips and the Irish Terrier doing what they normally do but there didn't seem to be much wildlife around so quite well behaved, going off in little spurts just ahead of us. We had just done a head count (all present and correct once Sophie had popped out of the undergrowth). We then got to the crossroads. Left into the water meadows and right toward home. All we had with us were Rupert and Amber (IT). Great. Then, straight ahead we saw Angel's white backside hopping in and out of the undergrowth so we assumed they were all up there tree-bunnying, as they do. We scrambled over the gate and wandered down through the field and Angel & Aimee catch us up. Still Bertha and Sophie missing. So we stop to whistle and call and after about 5 minutes Bertha comes galloping back, still no sign of Sophie. Wait a few minutes longer and then decide to go and look for her .........for the next hour and a half with a call to home in the meantime to see if she has gone back there. We then went out again armed with torches and different dogs with flashing collars to search some more, to no avail. Reported her missing to the Police (the lady was much amused to learn that her collar was leopard print and that she had a plaster round her wrist because she had sliced open her stopper pad on Friday - glad she thought it was funny). So that was it for the night, no point in carrying on in the dark.

I was out at first light with Ronan and Bertha, I walked all the perimeter of the fences inside the fields to check that she had caught her collar on a tree/wire/fence and strangled herself or that she had stumbled in the field chasing a deer and broken her back or that she had chased a tree bunny and run into a tree and broken her neck. Two and a half hours I was out ............. not a sign. Came home to ring Dog Warden, Doglost (had left a message last night but they hadn't then returned my call) and any one else I could think of. I was beside myself by then and just wanted to blub to someone. When I got home the ansaphone was flashing so I rushed to it hoping someone had rung to say they had got Sophie but it was just my boss saying he had got my message and hoped I found her :angry:

TC had kindly agreed to come over and tramp the fields & scour the countryside with me again and I had blubbed at Millie again, so felt I was not quite so alone! Once TC arrived I said I would just ring Doglost again, so I did and got a real person this time, who was very helpful and supportive. I was just about to e-mail a photo of Sophie to her before going out again and my mobile rang ............... it was the lady from the Police! Sophie had been found but she was in Swindon and the chap couldn't return her yet because he had no car until 3.00 pm!! :- " Don't worry I said, I will go and fetch her, no problem. OK she the lady from Police, she would phone the chap back and get him to ring me. Which he did.

Apparently he was coming to Reading with a group of friends to go Greyhound racing (track just down the road from where I live) but they were low on petrol so came to the garage at the end of the track where we were walking and spotted Sophie wandering in and out of the traffic on the dual carriageway (w00t) . They stopped, he got out of the car, called her and she went straight to him. They saw she had a tag on her collar and tried ringing my number but misread it and were leaving urgent messages on goodness knows whose telephone! :- "

Didn't have enough fuel to try driving round (not knowing the area) to find our address so carried on to the greyhound race meeting and left Sophie in their car (luckily for them she's not a wrecker!) and then took her home for the night. She had chicken (hand fed) and slept in their bed!!! But it was her birthday yesterday and she had had a nasty experience, so she could be forgiven for being spoilt! What a numpty she is! :wub:

So all in all, a very harrowing experience, we are now considering our options with Sophie ............... hobbles, tracking system, bells, any ideas gratefully received!! Don't say don't let her off the lead, I just couldn't do that!!!

Anyone want a prize winning, very friendly but 'not got a clue where you are' Whippet??? :thumbsup:

I am so pleased that lucky little Sophie was running through the traffic as they came along, what lovely people :huggles:

She was VERY pleased to see her mum though!

Although a very traumatic circumstance to meet up, it was wonderful to be there with Caroline when she got that telephone call saying that they had Soph :wub: We had a good journey over to Swindon, putting the world to rights and generally having a good old chin wag. Slightly different to the first part of the morning when discussing what had happened and then what our plan of action would be for the search.

I had all my walking boots, waterproofs, gloves etc ready for the mass expedition, and all I had to do was navigate Caroline's car (w00t) 8) :- "

So pleased for you that she's now home safe and well :huggles: . It must have been an awful night for you not knowing anything, :huggles: ,hope you've recovered from what I can only imagine would be an absolutely devastating and sad experience..

She's been a lucky girl to have been found and looked after so well :thumbsup: ,chicken supper and a warm space in their bed, sounds like they might have fallen in love with her and who could blame them. :cheers:
