Ruperts has just started to scratch his tummy today but he has already made it red and a bit sore :( , i have no idea why he's started to do this as i havent changed anything! i have read something on here about this but i can't find it! what can i safely put on it? and do i need to take him to the vet? i dont want to rush him there if its something and nothing but i am worried.

thanks :)

havent got a clue whats wrong with him,and its obvious that it must be irritating him,you could try tea tree which is soothing and keep a eye on it,if it gets any worse i would take him to the vets.

I wouldn't use Tea tree oil, especially neat as it has been known to cause severe problems!

Use Lavender oil instead,it's safe & very soothing & should clear up the problem

pure honey from a real beekeeper. T tree can be an irritant and only lavender oil is recommended undiluted on the skin

Summer

thanks very much for the advice  he isnt scratching as much now that its cool but i also wiped his tum with some warm water with a drop of lavender oil in it, could the heat do this to his tummy?

i was advised to use tea tree on grass rashes,i must say it didnt do any good, and it didnt do any harm, but ive taken your advise and wont use it again.

is lavender oil any good for grass rash,as my girls had it really bad may/june this year.

it sounds like grass rash. Has he been running in long grass?

Mine get it sometimes when i take them over my dads fields - i wipe their underside with baby wipes then smear on some aloe vera gel  seems to work well :D

I was thinking the same - Kobi had the very same problem and it cleared up eventually. I used a few drops of Lavendar in water

yes he has been running in grass, its a new field that iv only been in a couple of times the farmer has just cut it but the grass is long around the edges(sp)

i will wipe him down now after we'v been in there.

can you use aloe vera gel thats for humans or does it have to be for animals?

thanks again for all the tips

It doesn't have to be specifically for animals. I have both the gel and a liquid spray Aloe Vera (from Asda!) that I use on mine both before and after exercise when the grass is long and dry. Works a treat.

I would add though that although it looks very red and sore when mine get a grass rash, it does not seem to irritate so I would get him checked by your Vet if he is still itchy

I have found that the Tee tree Oil cream is very good but would not use the oil as that is very strong.

Sudocrem is great on rashes and sore areas. I take it every-where and use it on every-thing from spots to sun-burn to rashes, it is very mild and also acts as a barrier

thanks again guys, you really are a great help

i do have sudocrem so will give that a try but if its still there on monday morning im going to take him to the vets. i havent seen him scratch since i started wiping it with the warm water and a drop of lavender oil but im not really happy with the way it looks.

You will probably find it will clear up quicker if you put the Lavender oil on neat.

It's about the only essential oil which you can use safely this way
