Hello

We have a beautiful 7 month old whippet bitch, we were hoping to show her but at the moment she is sporting a pair of sticky up ears! This has happened since teething, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct them? We love her regardless of course. Thanks.

She is still young and her teeth will not properly finish bedding in until 12 months old. Her ears should improve with time as long as they are folded in the correct place when she does have them down. Beleive me im an ear expert!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for that, yes they fold correctly when they are down so I will keep my fingers crossed!

I was told that if the pups ears are correct at 8 weeks then they will come right. Any pics??

I wish that was true. I once had a gorgeous pup, her ears perfectly folded until 14 weeks, then ears that Pharaoh hound could be proud of. As far as i know they never came down again :(

Then i have seen some very iffy ears that came good at 18 months. :)

:) I have one with sticky up ears, they where fine untill he was about 8 months.

They went up & never went down again  but he can hold them perfect when he wants to

As long as they are kept down in the show ring I wouldnt worry about it

I went to a championship show recently and was surprised that the judge didn't test ears (for instance by using a squeaky toy to alert the dogs); there were a few whose ears looked suspect to me.

(not that it would make a jot of difference to their running or huntiing abilities)

what about high tails in puppies?

All you'll ever need

She looks just like a seal pup - bless her

Would she be allowed to wear that in the show ring?

Murphy has the most gorgeous sticky up ears. It doesn't stop him being a whippet and he lies them down when he is feeling unsure. I just love them! So expressive.

They all seem to carry them high and gradually keep them lower and lower. At least i do hope they always do as i watch Miss Claudia with her tail in the air :b

This is only done on the continent!

Owen has good days with his ears

and bad days

he usually keeps them under control in the ring but flicks them up if the neighbouring dog is being fed cheese or liver

they did go completely banana's once when i was trying to stack him in the ring and a kid was blowing rasberry's at him

There was an American a few years back judging at a Ch show who also did it.

Steve Dean sometimes takes the training at the ringcraft I go to and, because he is a terrier man, he tends to try and attract dogs to use their ears ....... I keep telling him not to do it to Whippets .......... LOL! I think he does it to Jeremy on purpose now ............ luckily he has correct ears!

Personally , i think if we get a judge who does try to get whippets ears up (w00t) I generally think its cos they dont know the breed  . If , after judging is complete I might ( just might o:) ) go up to the judge and just let them know that `squeaky toys , /keys etc are not used on whippets , I usually then get explanation that they wanted to see the dogs `looking alert ` or `to see their expression :- "

You should be able to tell if they have correct ears by how the feel and how they lie on the back of the head and neck

but as has been said , dont stopum catching rabbits if theyve got baduns ;)
