I'm very worried - my dog Mia (7 year old spayed about 1.5 years ago) has suddenly developed incontinence. On Friday early evening within the space of an hour she has 3 floods (like someone had poured glasses of water) where she was lying. She was awake and seemed totally unfazed.

It didn't happen again until Saturday early evening when she has 1 similar accident on the bed.

So far it has not happened apart from these 4 times. She is eating well and seems fine although today she seems a bit off colour, just not as bouncy as usual.

I will be getting her an appointment at the vet tomorrow and I'll take a fresh urine sample. Can anyone advise me in the meantime? Internet trawls just make me more concerned!

I don't know if its relevant but she had a tick right by where she wee's from. Successfully removed on Friday. She has also had to have her anal glands expressed :x and also I saw her eating an unknown item at the park a few days ago and couldn't get to her to stop it.

I know I need to go to the vet but I'm just really making myself worry so if anyone has had this experience before maybe they could advise?

Thankyou

Oh dear, sorry I can't offer any experience or advice, but good luck with it all and I hope Mia is back to herself soon,

Best wishes, :luck:

hi zoe, sounds like shes lost control of the neck of the bladder,my dogs the same diagnosed at 9 years old, dont be too worried yet but go to the vets i think they will try some medication called propalin.

my girl use to leak anything from a cup full to maybe 3 cups fulls as a rough guess.

they will need to check a infection out so good idea to take a sample with you.

It could be as Trish says cos my Inca is the same and its treatable with medication called propalin and it comes in a syrup.

With it coming on so quickly it could be a urine infection or quite possibly something to do with the tick as they do carry all sorts of nasties.

Your doing the right thing by taking her to the vets.

:luck: :luck: with her and let us know how she's doing.

Thanks for your responses.

She has just been out for a run, full of beans and looking ok so I won't get too panicked yet and I will let you know what the vet says.

I have custom made her some fetching short-style pants!

Oh poor Mia :( no advice sorry but hope shes better soon. :huggles:

Those are lovely pictures of your dogs.

I don't want to worry you any more than you are already, but my German Shepherd had this happen to him 4 1/2 years ago, out of the blue. He was absolutely fine one minute and the next he was weeing constantly. He was 8 years old at the time. We rushed him off to the vets and numerous tests later were told he had kidney disease. HOWEVER, after all the tears and worry, he is now going on 13 years of age and has more problems with his hearing (or lack of it) than his kidneys. Occassionally he has to go on the propanol syrup when he gets bad, but otherwise he is not on any medication and he's great. Good luck at the vet tomorrow, in all probability it is a bladder infection. Make sure she has plenty to drink.

:D May not e bad news. My speyed bitch, Maggie, suddenly started bed-wetting with no other symptoms. The vet said it is a form of incontinence peculiar to speyed bitches and prescribed a liquid (sorry can't remember the name) which was given in a few drops in her food. The problem stopped immediately and never recurred. Hope this helps :luck:

Any news Zoe? What did he say? :huggles:   :huggles:
He agreed with you guys - said it was most like a classic case of incontinence which is common to spayed bitches. He was talking about giving her hormone pills or maybe it would be syrup, but as she hadn't wet herself for 36 hours I said I would rather see the extent of the problem before I start medicating. Otherwise it will be hard to say if the medication has worked anyway.

She hasn't had a leak since Saturday afternoon, so I am monitoring her and will go back to the vet once I know more.

She was seeming quite miserable today though and walking very slowly.... I will just have to keep an eye on her for now. Better defrost some tripe as a treat too!

Thanks for your support!

my mums dog had the same problem it always happened when she would have been due a season vet said it was pmt cos she went of her food and was really grumpy, took another 3 years beofre she went on propalin full time and she 14 now

You could also try to give her raspberry leaf tablets. They are excellent for pregnant bitches, as they apparently stimulate some hormons. I also heard they help with age/spay caused incontinence.

raspberry leaf

The reason raspberry leaf tablets have been used is that it is excellent for toning up smooth muscle, which is why it is used for whelping, as it tomes the uterus. For these reasons it has also been used more recently in incontinent dogs and there have been some excellent reports. As often incontinence (especially in spayed bitches) is due to a lack in muscle tone following surgery.

Dorwest also produce a licensed herbal for incontinence Mixed Vegetable Tablets , these actually ensure she empties aher bladder completely when she does go, so helps prevents leaking.

Zoe, I'd trust Jo's advice and try her on the herbal stuff. Hopefully incontinence is all it is but that's really bad luck. Hope she (and you) is feeling better soon. :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Can you get these for `mature ` ladies Jo ? :- " Not me , of course ;)

Ordered the vegetable tablets for Mia. They said they were good for joint problems too which she sometimes gets, so I have high hopes they will do some good!

Still no accidents since Saturday evening so just waiting really!

Also she's been off chasing deer at top speed so she doesn't seem that under the weather anymore.

:D

That's good news! :huggles: :huggles: Maybe it was just an infection that's cleared itself up. :)
