Hi all

well, Sunny is back home safe and sound, but looking very sorry for himself

he is on anitbiotics for his bladder infection, which I feel really bad about, but I do watch them wee and poo cos with 4 dogs, you need to know who is doing what, and I honestly did not see anything wrong with his wee at all and although he was asking to go a bit more than usual, I thought it was just cos he was feeling a bit old and cos it was cold :wacko:

he has bruises up his arm from his blood tests and injections, they did the test where they took samples and injected stuff in to measure it over a period of time so he must be feeling a bit like a pin cushion now - unfortunately I have to wait a few days for the results

he's also had some x-rays, the vet had been called on an emergancy but left the message that he could see nothing significant on them and that I can call him tomorrow if I want a chat about it

so we are pretty much in the same place as yesterday - we know something is wrong but we don't know what cos its not obvious. We know that he hasn't got a large distinct growth which means that instead of seeing clearly what is wrong, we now have to start 'looking for trouble', which is making me feel really nervous - oh yeah, and its making me cry a lot! One of my best mates at work is a young bloke, we always take the micky out of each other and when he saw me looking like s*** at 6am this morning he burst out laughing, thinking I was either feeling ill or suffering a hang-over (nice friendship we got!) unfortunately for him he got a huge tearful reminder that I am actually a human lady, not some tough gobby bird at work :blink:

so thank you everyone for your kind wishes (and offers of sausages), it really helps :huggles: we're just pleased that we were lucky enough to bring him back home with us today

even if we are £350 lighter - thank god he's insured :sweating:

My black dog Frankie was diagnosed with Cushings last year after I kept taking back to my Vet saying "He's not right!!" The trouble is, as a disease, it can present in all manner of ways and because its effects are often insidious I think Vets are sometimes loathe to even consider it as a diagnosis. Anyway, she eventually did the tests and it was confirmed that he was quite badly affected, poor boy. However, he was started on Vetoryl and has not looked back since. The only down side is that it is a very expensive drug so it is better to get it on prescription (I find Vet-medic are cheaper than Canine Chemists) and I get 3 months supply on one prescription.

My Vet cannot believe the change in Frankie and has said that if Vetoryl had a poster he ought to be on it! LOL!! He has just turned 11 in January, and has had a new lease of life whereas he was an old man a year ago.

Good luck with Sunny, I hope the tests do not show he has Cushings but it is not all doom and gloom if he has!

Also if it is found he is only mildly affected Hilton Herbs do a herbal supplement especially for Cushings dogs. I gave it to Frankie when he was first diagnosed to boost the initial doses of Vetoryl and I also give it to Coco who has Cushings-syndrome symptoms from long term sterioid usage and it helps maintain her.

I will be pleased to share more in-depth info if you want!

Thanks for your replies, especially those of you who have shared your own experiences, some really positive stories - also thanks to those who have had negative experiences and are keeping them to yourselves :thumbsup: that helps too :- "

some of you have commented on Sunny's good condition in the photos and asked why the vet has suggested testing for cushings - well, as all dog owners do, I have picked the pics where he looks good :wub: in some of the others he looks like a sack of s*** :unsure:

also I'm hoping his good condition is due to us being fantastic owners who have responded quickly at the first sign of illness instead of waiting until he looks really sick - and yes, before you ask, I am saying that to try and convince myself so I don't feel too guilty :blink: sometimes the line between being a dog owner and a parent gets very thin, no matter what we do for our kids or dogs, its not quite good enough :wacko:

anyway, his symptoms are: being starving all the time, loss of muscle, thining hair on his thighs and being a bit trembly on his back legs, his initial blood test showed raised liver emzymes and cholestrol which is why he is being tested for cushings first, although he has said that he is keeping an open mind at the moment :blink:

Don't feel guilty Doris, why should you?? It is an illness (if it is Cushings or whatever it turns out to be) that you could do nothing to prevent but you are doing everything now to get it diagnosed and treated.

If you had ignored the symptoms or not bothered having treatment THEN you should have felt guilty!!

just got off the phone to the vet, he said that he is 99% sure Sunny has cushings and has offered to do another type of test which is done the same way as the last one, at different times during the day, but will show which area the cushings has been caused by

so, poor Sunny, back to the vets for the day on Thursday

That's such a shame. :huggles: Not knowing is agonising, you've got through that stage. :luck: for thursday.

One thing I've found with my own endocrine problems is that attention to detail, keeping records of symptoms/medication levels and tweaking doses in small increments can do wonders for how you feel; it can be a delicate balancing act when you're suppressing or replacing hormones.

Poor Sunny from what you've posted though you sound like super owners (parents!) and doing the best you can for your boy, which is all anyone can do in your situiation (sp), so dont feel guilty. An illness is a illness - you are not to blame!

I'm SURE he will go on for years yet :luck:

Yep, exactly the same as with my Frankie!! He behaves like a 2 year old now!!
