Think pickle is having a phantom or is actually pregnant??? yikes! She's not her self and i know after her seaon last time she produced millk and became depressed slightly and become more cuddley. This time it's lasted alot longer and i phoned vets about it a few days ago as she is changing shape? and boys are interested in her still. She came out of season about 3-4 weeks ago. Lui is entire but is only 5 months old. when she was in season he would have been 4 months ish! One vet told me he'd be lucky if he could do anything then the other vet i phoned was like you'll be suprised what they can do a that age....... great! now im worried! any advice please! She's due to be spade soon! but lui's not old enough yet!

I'm taking her to see if she'll need hormoane treatment or if she is actually pregnant!

No advice, but wish you luck at the vets. let us know how you go on.

Thanks! vet felt her tummy can't feel anything he doesn't think. Just going to wait and see and if she doesn't improve in herself he will put her on hormoane treatment! :luck: (w00t)

I wouldn't trust the feel the tummy method, not reliable at all. She needs to be scanned. If it is an unwanted litter and you are planning on having her speyed anyway, dependant on how far along a pregnancy is, you could have her neutered now.

I personally don't think it right to just wait and see because if she is pregnant and you don't neuter her now, you need time to prepare yourselves for a litter.

IF it is just a phantom, then i think you are doing the kindest thing by having her speyed in the future. My Dobe bitch had awful phantoms and it was the fairest thing to do for her.

Edited to add - i see that Pickle and Lui are full sister/brothers, so it really would not be a good idea at all to go ahead with a litter!

I agree with Jok,the only way to find out for sure if she's in whelp is to have a scan.....it's not that expensive!

If she's just (hopefully) having a phantom,i certainly wouldn't want to be giving her hormone treatment.Get some pulsatilla(homeopathic),it works wonders!

Hi, I think some dogs are definetely capable at 4 months, my 14 week pup has testes and although he's not showing any adolescent behaviour yet if he was around a bitch in season then I guess he might. A scan is the best way to tell - quick easy and not too expensive.

Ok thanks for the advice guys and yes lui has very big bollocks! I think i'm going to see if she gets any bigger and have her scanned if things don't change. I'm leaving the hormoane treatment till last resort would rather her body sort it out and then have her speyed! If she was pregnant with lui's pups i couldn't abort them not in a million years unless the vet said we'd have real big problems. Let's just see the outcome! xx

I really do think it is imperative you get Pickle scanned within the next few days so you know one way or another . Just waiting to see if she gets bigger is not the answer, when you have the possibility of a litter sired by her own brother.

I know aborting the pups would be very upsetting for you, but considering the circumstances it would be the best and most sensible thing all round.

People in breed there dogs all the time on purpose not that i ok with it because im not but doesnt mean i need to get rid of them. I'm willing to take full responsibilty if she happens to be pregnant. It wouldnt have been intentional but these things happen. I don't really want her to have puppies as i was going to have her done now i have lui but if she is pegnant and the puppies are healthy etc im keeping them! All the same she probly isn't anyway! Thanks for your views though! I will defo think about getting her scanned!

People absolutely do not intentionally mate brother to sister and close matings such as father x daughter are now banned by the KC.

Would you just rather not be prepared with the possibility that she may already be up to six weeks in whelp, instead of perhaps having a matter of days to prepare? A scan is an inexpensive, non invasive procedure and I can see no logical reason for not getting one done.

i would want to know either way, id be sick with worry, id have to know :(

the fact you have said you dont want puppies and the fact that its a brother and sister would just add to the stress of not knowing for me. id have her peeing on the stick right now if i thought it would work. :b

If she was six weeks in whelp she would be showing by now surely? and i didnt say i wasnt going to get one done...don't think bullying people into your opinion is fair? Thanks for the advice though ill keep it in mind!

Does anybody know roughly how much it would be to have her scanned?

I am offering you the best possible advice given the very serious situation your bitch may be in.

I just feel very strongly about this subject and I am sorry if you feel that I am bullying you into agreeing with my opinion.

If she were six weeks in whelp she may only just be starting to show - you have already said she has changed shape, so I think you have answered your own question there.

If it were a small litter then she may show only very little.

thanks ok i do appreciate your advice and im am concerned myself hence taking her to the vets...there bloody useless anway!

As for the price of a scan, your vet may charge you approx £50, but there are sheep/dog scanners around that charge a quarter of that price.

Cool...how would i go about finding someone who has one? x

The scanner we use charges £16.

Ruby had an extra scan at the vets when she went over due and they only charged me £17 for that, but i know that most vets charge ridiculous sums of £50 +. It's a couple of minutes job too so really doesn't justify that sort of price.

Good luck, i hope that it's just a phantom!
