Ben is a little over 6 months now and has been wormed 2 weeks ago but after his morning carpet swim ritual, (he only does this in the morning once he has gotten out of bed and had his breaky) where he lies on his side and pulls himself along the carpet, then rolls over and does the other side, he gets up and did a bit of bottom shuffling too.

I checked his bottom :- " and there is nothing there.... like I said he has been wormed only 2 weeks ago, so any ideas why he did this this morning

TIA

 yeah, Ian thought he'd added on a little extra to his morning ritual

How often do dogs tend to need their anal glands doing? I have to admit that Sidney is coming up to 3 years and he has never had his done... then again, I wouldn't compare these pair as they are totally different  :huggles:

  lots of surprises await you Katie :- " . No just kidding my Phoebe is 3 and she has never needed it doing thank goodness. I always thought that if they needed it doing regularly it was a sign that their diet was too high in fat/sugar and not enough fibre so if all is well you shouldn't need to worry about that :D .

The anal glands are two little sacs at 20 to 4 just inside the anus itself.

they can be emptied by squezzing gently - this eliminates a foul smelling paste/liquid - a job i have done as a groomer occassionaly or your vet will do for you.

i wouldnt advise at this early age that they would be a problem - always initially think of worming and if the dog carries on pulling himself along the floor its something to consider but anal glands which are emptied can become full again and it becomes a viscious circle causing great discomfort to a dog if they fill up and become blocked - needing an op to remove them which ive done and is ghastly for the poor animal.

give your dog time to see if he is just having an itch and see if it calms down with extra roughage in his diet - sometimes that is all thats needed.

some of mine do pull themselves along the floor from time to time but i know they havent got an anal gland problem so i leave them well alone.

hope that helps

out of my 7 ive only one that as needed her anal sack emptying and shes been fine ever since.

I think it's worth getting it checked. Chloe is only 5 months and she had to have hers done the other day. I don't know whether her bad start in life made a difference but the vet said although it's unusual for dogs her age to need it doing it's not unheard of. She's not doing 'the shuffle' anymore thank goodness! :D

really dont think i could do it,

cornish you are right where are the womans gloves???????

I would say a dog dragging it's bottom is either a dirty bottom, or anal gland problem - the latter being the most likely.

Now, I don't ever touch anal glands unless they need doing, and if your dog is on a good diet, and producing good firm poos :x they should express naturally. On the odd occasion they have needed doing (maybe after a bout of diarrhoea), I haven't been able to do them from outside - so I glove up, and go on in  Once you have a finger inside (after cutting your nails of course  ), you can feel like a small pea on either side inside the bottom (as animalady says - 20 to 4). I find it easier to squeeze them this way, and it also makes sure you get it all out. It stinks :x real bad, but better out than in I say:lol:

The only one of my dogs who has had a problem with anal glands, was one who had them expressed as a matter of routine at vaccination as a puppy. After having them emptied once, she seemed to need it doing again and again, and because she was continuously itchy, the vet removed them. No problem since with anal glands obviously, but she is on immunotherapy for allergies - so the itching was probably nothing to do with the anal glands in the first place

If you've never come across anal glands - I'd forget we've ever mentioned them - but if your dog drags it's bottom - that's more than likely the cause

i have to say that all of my dogs at one time or another have needed their anal sacs emptied and i have always done it myself...apart from once, that was the last time i'll ever let a vet near my dogs behind ever....

...my dog Bryn had his anal sacs expressed by my old vet but he didn't empty them properly and unbeknown to us bryn developed an impacted gland which became infected... the same vet proceeded to flush the gland while my dog was conscious which made my boy scream and he needed two courses of antibiotics and two bouts of flushing.

despite a good diet some dogs can just be prone to anal sac problems.

i will always do my own dogs glands myself....i totally begrudge paying ten quid for a vet to simply squeeze my dogs bum...if he did them all it would cost fifty quid  besides i do them when i bath the dogs....this also helps prevent the random expressing of anal glands while they are laying on the sofa or wherever.

i personally don't find doing it anymore of a problem than cleaning up their poo, they are simply the less attractive joys of dog ownership. (w00t)

Well we are back from the vets and all is ok.

The vet has put it down to a bit of a itch as Ben's glands are fine and he is up to date with the worm stuff....

I must admit until today I didn't know about dogs anal glands.... they say you learn something new every day

No I didn't see the zit video.... I was turning green with the gland squeezing :x

I know one thing for sure... I never want to be a vet  :- "

One of my dogs does somthing similar to this but there is nothing wrong with him he is just being silly.

He goes into the lounge and lays down on his side in the middle of the floor, then he starts to pull himself along with his front feet and he goes in a sort of circle.

If you say woof at him he sometimes tries to bite the carpet and barks back at you, then he rolls over and does the same on the other side :))
