Took the girls up to the schooling track today, we were meant to be racing properly there this afternoon but it was cancelled. We thought we might as well take the girls up there for a time trial anyway, and I wanted to try my new camera out there anyway. Here are the results, not great, but the camera is rather complicted and I'm learing how it works. There are some rather nice ones of my OH slipping them for his first time.

First Tess, she has such joie de vivre, I have never come across another dog who so throughly enjoys life, just look at the sparkle in her eyes.

Nana is by far the easiest to photograph, probably because she is white so stands out well against the background.

I always find Josie hard to photograph, I wonder if it is because her rough coat makes it more difficult for the auto focus to pick up on.

Yet more to come

Little Esme has to be one of the laziest whippets on earth (unless there is the smell of bunny around). I have rarely seen a dog make less effort running around the track  -_- .

I know she LOOKS like she's trying in these ones, but I promise you that she really wasn't by the time she got about 1/2 way round, she wasn't even puffed by the time she got to the end.

What fantastic photos with great definition

The muscle tone is incredible

Great dogs and great photography

Brilliant pictures Olivia    What is the new camera ?
:b Canon 40D, proving to be rather harder work than the 350, but I hope it'll be worth it when I figure out how it works.

Very, very good photos :D

They're so clear and well defined.

Looks like the girls had a great time! :)) :D

The dogs look amazing.

What put a smile on my face was the gent releasing the dogs on track. He looked so happy and seemed to be loving what he was doing and in awe of the dogs. (w00t)

brilliant photos as usual, never get fedup of seeing them

Lovely photos. I'm due to buy the same camera when I'm paid for a painting (I was told September) so I'm dying to get my hands on it.

What are they chasing? ('Scuse my ignorance :D ) They look like they're after something and I've never been to racing although I wish I could.

WOW...wih all due respect Olivia, new camera and all......you really are a good photographer... Those are brilliant shots.

It is a great camera even if it makes me work rather harder to take pics than I'm used to.

They chase a 'hare' moves around on tracks (a bit like railway tracks). The hare itself changes freqently. This time it was a wind socky sort of thing, sometimes it is a large black and white soft toy rabbit, sometimes it is a rabbit skin, but they try to make it flappy to attract the dogs' attention.

Janis- thank you very much, but it really is down to the cameras.

Nice sharp action shots.

I've not really tried much in the way of action shots with my two, as they don't run around very much, or I don't have my camera handy when they do occasionally burst into action. I would imagine putting your camera on a tripod, manually focussing on a spot where they will run through, and shooting ( (w00t) ) at this point should give good results. If you were using the auto action/sports mode, then this is really good as it continually refocuses on a moving subject.

Not sure about the colour of your dogs. it may affect the metering, as it detects that mainly white will require a faster shutter speed, hence sharper shots. Just my own theory...not sure if this is correct or not.

Anyhow, your shots look nice and sharp to me  Wish I could get mine sharp too on K9  Posting photos to k9 reduces the photo quality anyway, but a lot of members still manage to post some really nice sharp photos. It puzzles me

Thanks Nicola- all very good advice.

I think a tripod or at least a monopod might be an idea, but I find myself running a bit to get as many shots as possible and being rather clumsy I'm fairly certain I'd end up tripping over it.

I use the camera on the manual settings with the AI focus on as this tracks the movement. I find can use really fast shutter speeds with Nana (white) which means I can get nice sharp pics of her, I need a slightly slower speed for Josephine (dark and hairy) to get any detail on her coat, but if I let it get too slow I lose the sharpness. I am currently fiddling with the different ISO settings to see what differnce this makes, I have it set a bit high for these I think which has made them a bit grainy, but I think meant that I could use a faster shutter speed.

As far as losing sharpness when uplaoding onto K9 is concerned I agree, but the best pattern I have found is to upload full size images onto photobucket and then use their editing process to resize.

Fabulous photos of your gorgeous girls.
