Poor old Twiggy has been in a lot of pain slowly developing but suddenly worse - much worse- yesterday. She can hardly move without screaming. Have a horrible feeling it might be cancer. She has LOTS of lumps all over her chest and some are very deep. She saw the vet last week but he was not concerned.

This morning I could not move her out of my bed (where she spent the night crying every time she moved) so I rang the vet. My usual one is off today so they have given me norocarp tabs until he sees her tomorrow.

I am really worried, as if the pain cannot be controlled, she will have to be pts, even though she is eating and happy when the pain isn't 'grabbing' her. A real dilemma.

If she is put on the norocarp (if they work) or other painkillers, is there an online vet that might be cheaper than my own vet. It cost me £4.60 for 6 tabs this morning! (w00t)

Has anyone any suggestions for pain killers for dogs? If it is arthritis (it affects the whole of her body from chest up to shoulders and even hurt to move her head in the night) is there any sort of external rub that might work?

Any help welcome as I do NOT want to lose my dear old lady.

i think even if you use pets on line you will still need a prescription from your vet

Poor Twiggy :( Yes you would still need a prescription but you could still get them online cheaper, just need to send the prescription to them. Example, I've been on a website selling 100 tabs (20mg) for £26. Don't know about the dose your vets have given her but does this work out cheaper?

:luck:

Mine are the 20mg tabs - 3 a day (divided into 2 doses) and 6 tabs cost £4.60, so I could get a prescription tomorrow and send it to an internet vet.

Can you tell me who sells for £26 per 100 please?

I've just seen this thread :( so, so sorry to hear that your poor girlie is suffering at the moment. Sending loads of positive vibes that you can get her sorted out. Just been thinking, if it is arthritus then have you considered hydrotherapy? I have heard it has very good results. Sending lots of :huggles: and :luck:

Fred occasionally cries with pain and can't move (the vet diagnosed arthritis a year or two back and he walks with a constant limp as well). It only happens once every couple of months. I become aware of it when I hear him crying at night. He can't move from the bed and I have to carry him out and down the stairs. Usually a dose of metacam straight into his mouth does the trick. I don't think this should be taken long term (and should be administered in the food), but I do keep it in the house as a standby pain killer, as it does work very swiftly. Poor Twiggy :( One small bottle does last quite a while, as it only takes a small amount to work.

In the meantime I give him cod liver oil tablets and he wears a bioflow. He hasn't been as bad over the 6-8 mths; he's managing a lot better without regular doses of metacam. I couldn't say why this is....

Twiggy sounds in an awful lot of pain for it to be just arthritis :(

If it's arthritis acupuncture has really helped an arthritic dog we know.

I can't for the life of me find the site now but if you type the drug name into google you will find places selling it.

Vet UK are selling them singley for 26p each, I have used this site lots of times and have no complaints

Thanks everyone. I don't somehow think it is her arthritis -she has cod liver oil, daily, except the 2 days a week she has sardines in oil, also glucosamine with chondroitin - high strength- and a bio-flow collar.

She has a LOT of external lumps on her chest and one nasty one under an arm. I feel that there is something internal perhaps touching on a nerve when she moves in certain ways.

She was not quite so bad this evening, after the norocarp, but when it was wearing off, the pain came back and she was unable to sit still and kept whimpering. I'll want a stronger painkiller (or more frequent doses), as I can't have her in pain - it also upsets poor Polly. I'm really hoping something can be done, as we have had her 4 years -she came as a rescue aged 9, and was 13 last month. She is a dear old thing and absolutely velcroed to me - my little fur shadow!!

Will let you all know how she gets on after the vets trip tomorrow. Just hoping I can get her into the car OK.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts and good wishes.

Here she is on her birthday last month.

Good luck at the vets today Twiggy.... :huggles: :luck:

I would be asking more searching questions of the vet, or even get a second opinion. You may not want to hear the answers, but I think you need to find out exactly what is causing the pain - it may be that the lumps could be removed? If you can find out the cause then you may find a treatment or even a cure.

There was a 13 year old dog near me (lab x) who had a really massive lump near his back legs, he had it for a few months - then one day I saw him out with the owner and it had gone! They had the vet remove it (they had got a second vet to have a look and he said no problem), they had a further year with the dog before they lost it and the owner said they were really glad they had the lump removed.

To be honest I don't like using pain killers with animals - they don't cure the reason for the pain, just mask symptoms and there is always a chance that when you give stronger and stronger pain killers that you will end up overdosing.

It is awful when they are in pain and I really sympathise with you, I think you really need to be firm with the vet though (or get a second opinion).

Good luck. :huggles: :luck:

Janet, I am so sorry to hear Twiggy is not well. The symptoms you describe here do not sound like arthritis to me, though I don't know what they do sound like.

There are some weird viruses about so maybe it is one of them?

Sending positive thoughts to the lovely Twiggy and hoping she gets better soon.

...and a hug to you, it is so awful when the babes are not well, and even worse when you don't know what is wrong.

Arnica is a herbal painkiller that also relieves stress. Especially helpful if a dog is suffering through the night, as it enables them to get some rest.

...But of course I know you want to get to the bottom of the cause. Good luck to you all.

POOR TWIGGY AND POOR YOU :huggles:

:huggles: TO YOU BOTH
