Sorry to hear your Zak was stung, as you can see our Tegan was stung a few weeks ago, it took about 3 days before she was back to normal it is frightening, it took three of us to get it out of her mouth as she'd bitten the back end off and the stinger was stuck in the inside of her mouth, its such a worry, sadly it hasnt stopped her catching them, a week later we got a Bee out of her mouth luckily it hadnt stung her that time.

Wishing your zak a speedy recovery :luck: :luck:

I'm sorry but Tegan looks so funny there. I know I shouldn't laugh as it must hurt, but how cute!

We had a similar thing with Jazz the other week. Boothros was walking her down the road, when all of a sudden Jazz yelped and jumped all over the place. Boo noticed a wasp on her thigh - quick return to home and administered 1/2 a piriton tablet (as suggested by vet) - Lump soon went down, and Jazz none the worse for her ordeal - must have been lucky, as I hardly noticed much swelling, so reckon the wasp must have had her through the thickest part of her fur (is there such on a whippet?!), and only just managed to get a bit of sting in.

Poor Zak. :huggles: Yes, this happened to Jonah back in June. I didn't realise he'd been stung at first as there was no swelling, but rang the emergency vets (it was a Sunday) as he was acting really oddly and I thought something awful had happened to him. :sweating: But not long afterwards his face swelled up and I knew exactly what it was then. Here he is - he did look a bit weird! (w00t) It took a few hours for the swelling to go down.

that looks awful, I've had a wasp sting, know how painful it is.

Is the piriton for the dog ?, be handy to have in.

An annoyed wasp was in my bathromm this am when I was in the shower, it buzzed against the ceiling above me, every inch of my flesh available to sting (w00t) and dropped onto my head, you've never seen me jump out of the shower so fast, had water everywhere. 2 mins later I flushed a flat wasp down the loo............... yep, I love them as equally as I do the slugs :x

piriton is really useful

There's a list of good stuff to keep in your doggy First Aid Box in the FAQ forum, if that's any use to you  and some info about bee and wasp stings and how to treat them.

Oscar had the same problem too. I wasnt sure if hed been stung either.....his face went down quite quickly...but he did have bumpy bits too...

Poor little Zak  , hope he gets better soon :luck:

Last night Bailey I think got stung by a wasp and his left part of his nose and lip swelled up, poor little chap, think he'd had a round with Frank Bruno!!!!!! Anyway I rang the vets immediately last night and said he was eating and drinking and they said to keep an eye on him, so I didn't worry to much and he was still breathly through both nostrels (hoped that was a good sign!). Took him for a walk and he was loving life meeting loads of new doggie friends and by 10pm last night the swelling was going down :D He wasn't as bad as Zak looking by the photo but its never nice to see your little baby poorly.

Is he still eating, drinking and playing or is he resting up??? Lots of huggles from us :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Yeah this happened to Molly on tuesday night and of course I'd run out of Piriton and of course asda had run out too so it was a trip to the emergency vets for the princely sum of £102 (w00t)

NEVER, EVER run out of piriton!!! Guess what I went out to buy the following day :- "

It took hers until thursday to go down and she still won't eat much.

Poor Zak!! The wasps up here are really dopey atm and of course that's when they are at their worst. Rifle was stung last year on his right b*****k poor thing, Piriton took the swelling down quite quickly but he did have a funny walk for a day or two!

Good grief - so many poor dogs have been stung. Do you know I don't think I have seen a wasp round here ( we are plagued by flies at the moment though)- but I am off to buy some piriton straight away (what is it - a cream or a tablet?)

Its an antihistamine tablet available in chemists over the counter and in some supermarkets. My vet said 1/2 a tablet.

its cheaper if you get the generic rather than brand name, so look out for chlorphenamine

Monty suffers from a grass allergy and is currently being treated with 1 tablet 3 times a day, so I think you can safely give a whole tab BUT DEFINITELY CHECK THIS WITH YOUR VET  cos I dont want to be responsible for misinformation :b :b

Yeah but not the Asda in Morley   my vet says 1 whole tablet, that is also what ILKC said when she used to come on here

Can you only use Piriton or is it OK to use other anti-histamines?

I asked my vet the other night and he looked through his drug book and none of the others were in there (cetirizine, loratidine, acrivistane he checked for which are the main fever remedies).

I think Piriton (Chlorphenamine) belongs to a particular, older group of antihistamines. The newer human varieties which have been introduced work slightly differently I think, to prevent the drowsiness that was always a problem for hay fever sufferers on the older antihistamines.

I'm no pharmacist/vet or anything though so I might be wrong.
