ETA: I've just checked and a borzoi is the same as a Russian wolfhound - so either Violet and I are both right, or both wrong.

yes you're both right!

The Borzoi, also called the Russian wolfhound is a breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Descended from dogs brought to Russia from central Asian countries, it is similar in shape to a greyhound, and is also a member of the sighthound family.

He looks like a very healthy fit Bassett hound but there's so few healthy fit ones around I'm wondering if he's something else!

He is a form of Basset you are right! But he has a very posh name!

A CLUE: he originated from France

I think it's a 'Artesian Normand Basset', (not sure of its spelling). Never seen one in the UK but I have seen a few at FCI shows.
