I learned to drive [& parallel-park! - OMD] in my elder sister's / BiL's car, a monster nicknamed Sherman, 'cuz he was a tank...

tinosltd.jpg

Sherman was a classy pearl-grey, but otherwise looked JUST like this - a 1973 Ford LTD station-wagon.  At approx 24-ft long, U had to be bl**dy careful when in reverse or while parking, not to smash any part of Sherman or any nearby objects. // His headlights were hidden by doors, which opened vertically & slowly, with a near-silent hiss, like the eyelids of a waking giant.

I missed Sherman when he went to that great parking-lot Beyond - he was reliable & responsive, with power steering that could be operated with one finger, very precise & no brute force required. He died with over 200K miles on his odometer. He'd crossed the USA from east to west coasts & back 4 times, among other travels, & wore the license plates of 4 states over his lifetime: PA, VA, Illinois, Michigan, & Calif.
[BiL was a Navy career guy, went in at 17 with his parents signing his papers & retired with over 35-years in, as a Chief Petty Officer. They were stationed in Philthy, Norfolk, Chicago, Great Lakes MI, & San Diego, Calif, while Sherman was my sister's transport - often while her hubby was at sea.]

What car was Ur "learner"?

A 1935 Morris 8, After learning to drive and passing my test I kept it for 3 yrs. But then needing to travel more and being a touch worried about its reliability due to its age I left it with my brother, and he's still got it. Mind he is an old car nut. He has the Morris, a 1947 Riley and a 1959 Mini. One of them is always off road getting stripped and re built which he enjoys.

WOW - that's quite a collection!  He must love them. :)

one of my former BFs had a 1957 Chevy BelAir, & while i would like to see Dan again, i'd rather have a long-term relationship with his ex-car.
:b
Bertha was wonderful, a hideous color [a brush-job with bright flat-blue paint, the sort of color that goes with absolutely nothing & clashes with everything] - but by God, she could run like a rabbit, was built like a train locomotive, & was solidly metal. No flimsy foil, no shattering plastic, but sheet-steel.

Dan & i had her for almost a year, he'd bought her from his uncle Richard, as a rebuild - when she developed a mysterious blister on her hood. // Dan flicked at it with his thumbnail one day, & it fell off - MASKING TAPE over a cotton ball, to cover a bullet hole in her hood?!?! -  definitely uncle Dick's make-do "repair", he had the grace to blush & apologize when Dan asked him about it.
I don't know why he didn't just strip it & weld a patch - his farmhouse workshop had every tool known to man or woman, including a standing tank oxy-acetylene torch. Who knows? -- he COULDA fixed it properly, but couldn't be arsed.  :D

I think Bertha was my all-time favorite car. Ugly, but lovable.

A 1953 Morris minor called Dumbo :p and took my test in a Hillman Imp ....and failed first time :( no way would I pass today with so many cars on the road ...hardly anything on the roads back in the early seventies .

A mark I Ford Fiesta, in Ford Nova Green, and I called it Ziggy after Ziggy Stardust!
My in car music system (apart from my singing!) was a battery operated portable tape player. Oh, and I had a blanket made out of knitted squares that my Nanna made, over the back seat and cushions in the corners. I wanted to put curtains up too, but my parents thought that a step too far .......
When I sold it the lady that bought it thought it had no brakes. That was in the days before servo assisted brakes. My legs were never as strong as back in those days!!!

I learnt to drive in my driving instructors corsa but then when I passed my test I only had my dads van  which was a Peugeot partner.

I will always remember coming home from a night out (when I still lived at home) and pulling into our driveway (which had concrete posts on both sides). I cleared the front but didn't check my mirrors and got the back end wrapped around the post! I just remember seeing my dad whip the bedroom curtains open and shout what the b****y hell have you done to my van :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: I managed to pull the side bumper off and cause some heavy denting. oops!!

I learnt to drive in a Ford Fiesta, my driving instructor had hair that stuck up, reminding me of one of those birds with sticky up fur on their heads:D i couldn't look at him without trying not to laugh, it wasn't styled like that as it looked as if nothing would stick it down.
