Saturday i had a job interview for a trekking centre. All was going very well until she said, well it will be like an apprenticeship except you wont be getting any pay! So me being stupid me said oh yea thats ok, and carried on with interview, then she said oh can u cum tomorrow on an hours trek and help clean the animals out? So anyways got home and thought theres no way am i gonna do very hard work for free! So i rang her back and said i had changed my mind. Well she flew at me on the fone saying i wouldn't get a job in animal managment cos i wasn't dedicated and looking at my CV i didnt have anyother problems working else where for free! she then went on to say that none of us from college can walk into a paid animal job because theyll only take on ppl who are fully trained?! This has really gutted me to be honest, because i have paid the best part of £2000 to do my course only to be told i wont get a paid job?!

Sorry to rant but just wondered if anyone could shed some light on this for me?

did you go to the job thinking it was paid??

i wouldnt listen to her sounds like a lady on a power trip to me, knowing what that lady can be like now are you not glad you didnt go to work with her.

im sure there will be the right job for you somewhere else dont let this woman bring you down

sorry to hear that :(

how long was she expecting you to work for free?

what hours were you expected to do?

if you want to do unpaid work with ability to add to cv then id suggest going to a national animal charity one or two days a week?

how far are you through your course? what type of work are you looking for? whats your experience so far? soory to ask so many questions ut i may be ale to point you in the right direction

Hi, it was going to be 7 hours a day three times a week! which would have meant me giving up my little part time job and therefore would have no money! I finish my course in june, it was a two year animal managment diploma. I worked for 14 months at a rescue center, had three weeks work exp in a boarding kennels, two weeks work exp at Blackpool Zoo, and the rest has been with the animals in the animal academy, oh and some lambing on a friends farm!! As you can probably tell i havent really specialised in any area, although i enjoyed working at the rescue centre and as i have grown up with dogs i seem to have a knack with them. I am also quite interested in veterinary nursing though!

then i can see no way she will stop you doing what you want to!!

sounds like she wanted experienced free labour :- " the minimum wage law allows people to work for free if given an apprenticeship  rarely is there a job at the end :- " i take it this work is seasonal too?? if you really want to be there then offer her 1 day a week, she can only say no? then you could still get the experience whilst doing your part time job?

you have varied experience and whilst no long term , you have still got out there and tried , put your cv into all aspects and areas you would like to work and see what comes up? work with animals is low paid long hours and little human reward but the animals gve you all the rewards you need

Sounds like been taken for a ride by this woman. I agree with Posh Totty....

and I think she could pay you a small wage if nothing.

My daughter worked for free in a stable, leading ponies around, mucking out...grooming...tacking up etc etc all for free and she didnt even get a free ride ..well not that often anyway, she had to pay for the rides, but at the time she was only aged between 15 and 17...

The farm where I work take young people on part time and they get paid...minimum wage....

and my daughter eventually started working at a livery yard near us....and got paid for mucking out, feeding etc.

I would look out for something, I sure it will come along...as it sounds like you have alot of animal experience, best of luck... :luck: :luck: dont let her put you off want you really want to do.

Hi, thanks everyone. I have just been writing some letters and sending of CVs hoping something will come along! But talk about knocking your confidence, its hard enough as it is without some one telling you you wont get any where lol

HI Rach, picked an awful job to go into money wise, often look in H and H 4 positions and know no way could i afford to live on those wages (Red Bull addictions see!) Hope you find one that not only gives you a decent living but job satisfaction as well :luck: :luck:
