I now feed Chudleys racer, i've fed redmills and beta greyhound but since feeding Chudleys i wouldn't feed them ever again. Chudleys is the only food that keeps weight on Vixen even when i work her hard. I also feed raw lamb from TPMS.
Now Vixen isn't running 160 metres 3 times a day, she's working all day ferreting or running 15-20 runs on the lamp. As well as 3-4 miles a day road walking and 1/2hr free running on the days she's not working. Chudleys seems to have increased her stamina throughout the day. It's not cheap though at £16.45 a bag, however i do believe you get what you pay for.

Bloody awesome looking dog your have there looks well fit. di

Bakers has too many colours and chemicals in it. Mine do well on Greyhound Maintenace, Cornwall Farmers sell it, £10-99 for 15 kgs. Good quality food at a reasonable price.

My lot get fed on pet mince from the butchers with a biscuit such as Greyhound Maintanace or simular.I used to feed them on tripe, but the prices have got up quite a bit  .Also they get left over veg, rice, pasta and sardines now and again :D :D

I'm afraid to change Leia's food at the moment because she's doing so well on what i'm feeding her, but i will pop out to Cornwall Farmers and have a look, ;) (I want a nose around at the horse gear anyway) :- :p

She's been on it about 10 months now, and she's never been better mate.

I've used Chudleys with my peds and thought it was also good for keeping weight on them.

We have a few different feeds on the go. They all got beef mince, rice and veg but the oldies get a mixer for seniors like Iams Senior as they tend to have glucosmine in and a higher fat content to keep their weight up. The younger dogs alternate from any high quality sourced protein like Beta/ Wainwrights / Iams etc and Australian depending on whether they're racing. They also have daily treats of dried tripe sticks or dried cod.

there is so much misconception re protein in sighthounds Proteins are the building blocks of muscle and should not be a major source of energy. Diets low in protein have been associated with

increased injuries. A working dog diet should have a minimum 26% protein. For hard

working dogs, diets containing 30-40% protein are even better. The goal is to spare the use of

protein as an energy source so it can be used to build muscle mass and repair muscle

damage. Protein contains amino acids, which are the building blocks for hormones, tissues, and enzymes. it also provides energy and helps develop muscle mass for extra size and strength. A busy dog should have a diet that includes high-quality protein, enough to provide for muscle and structural repair.

below are some interesting papers on feeding athlete dogs protein

www.working-retriever.com/library/dietper.html

“One example is research on the value of protein2. Dogs in intense training were fed foods with protein levels varying from 16% to 40%. Dogs fed the lower-protein foods (16% and 24%) had injuries during training and all of the dogs on the 16% protein food were removed from training due to injuries. Dogs fed 32% and 40% protein had no injuries during the training process. An important goal of canine nutritionists is to provide the performance dog with a food that supplies sufficient calories from other sources to allow minimal protein usage for caloric needs. This spares the protein for tissue repair, hormone production, and the other crucial functions of protein.”

www.purina.com/breeders/magazine.asp?article=430

“Protein is important to help reduce the risk of training anemia. One study showed that endurance dogs fed 19 percent of their calories as protein suffered significantly more injuries, had decreased oxygen uptake and fewer red blood cells than dogs fed diets containing 24, 32 or 40 percent protein. Dogs fed 40 percent protein had the highest circulating plasma than any group throughout training, showing that the increase in nutrient needs associated with exercise cannot be met with a low-protein diet.1 In a study of racing greyhounds, Hill found that a diet containing higher fat and protein and lower carbohydrate increased performance. “We compared a 32 percent fat, 25 percent protein and 43 percent carbohydrate diet to one with 25 percent fat, 21 percent protein and 54 percent carbohydrate.” He says, “These greyhounds ran an average of 0.2 seconds faster – the difference between winning and losing a race – when fed the diet containing higher fat and protein and lower carbohydrate.”

www.acsma.org/csmtdbt5.htm

“Protein is both an energy source and a source of amino acids. High-quality animal source proteins provide superior digestibility, amino acid balances, and palatability. Exercise increases an athlete’s protein requirement. Exercise places excess demands upon the body which result in tissue disruption and occasionally tissue damage. These tissues must be remodeled and repaired which can result in an increased protein demand. This demand can be met by increased protein ingestion. Protein can also be used for an energy source with an energy yield of 3.5 kcal per gram.”

Fat is what enhances energy for a dog. It is highly digestible and helps keep energy levels stable, unlike carbohydrates. Calories are important for a performance dog, and fat is the best source.

"Chudleys seems to have increased her stamina throughout the day" and "shes been on it for 10 month now" would nt that be more likely to be due her maturing bodily? How old is she now?

I always used Redmills and minced rabbit and some mackeral when i used to course/rabbit with my dogs and a weak gravy for cold winter days and hot water milk for my outside dogs and ferrets.

Mine are fed on fresh chicken, liver, duck, tuna and sweetcorn with fresh diced veggies put with applaws 70% meat dry biscuits. They have pigs ears, jerky, left overs from our plates. And yes they have crap lol like biscuits and yogurt etc. they have lovely glossy coats and they thrive on it! Very expensive though! :D

eeeeek ....mine are having chick tikka balta & rice tonight mixed with bakers complete/ any other complete biscuit (evie will either have a lick of baileys or the dreggs of ovaltine /horlicks at bedtime)

usually my 3 (2 whips & a mongrel) have whatever breakfast is left over from the kids like toast, rice crispies etc

tea is usually fish a couple of times a week (sardines or pilchards in tomatoe sauce or oil) with any leftovers & bakers

any tinned dogfood with leftovers & bakers about twice a week

and i'll buy a cheap chicken (from the whoopsy aisles in the supermarket /aldi/lidl) and slow cook it for 8 hrs with pasta which normally does a couple of meals or i'll get oxtail from the farm shop and same again slow cook for hrs with pasta.

My dogs love the varied diet they have obviously if i get serious about racing evie this year then i'll have to modify her diet but as it stands anything goes in our house at feeding time

roger gets fed on redmills racer with sardines in oil/tomato,or chicken, pasta, tomatoes, beans, veg n gravy.our oldies just get fed on low protein meal, with other stuff like roger.they all have weetabix for brekkie, and a warm drink at bedtime. 8)
