Hi - I have a lurcher (now 13) who is a greyhound x bordercollie. I have always thought that a lurcher was a sighthound x working dog.......

 

If that is the case then why are we now seeing so many lurchers that are bull x's? They really do not fit the classic lurcher look!

 

I am sure many will have an opinion....please be kind to me

I have always thought a Lurcher to be a sighthound crossed with anything.

As I understood it a lurcher was a sighthound crossed with any other breed of dog.

ive always thought it as a sighthound or 2 crossed with something thats makes it more suitable for what you intend to work it on and type of ground you run it on

no its a lurcher as theres still the none running dog blood in there long dogs are supposed to be 100% running dog blood

Mine are all running dogs .Whippet x greyhound,mostly whippet.The big one is Deerhound x Greyhound x Saluki.

This is what i have always believed.

i can see this point but i wouldn't have thought say a deerhound xcollie or a salukix wheaten terrier would be a lurcher of sort ,some how, maybe because i like a bit of whippet or greyhound in

Now i may be wrong but i have always been led to believe if you follow the blood lines back havnt most if not all greyhounds and whippets got bull blood in them ?

Now i may be wrong but i have always been led to believe if you follow the blood lines back havnt most if not all greyhounds and whippets got bull blood in them ?

No your totally right with the greyhounds not sure about whippets, the racing fraturnity put the bull blood in as they were getting to fine and if i am not mistaken as well on this matter i think saluki blood was put in the greyhounds too, to produce the stayers :thumbsup:

I can see where your coming from with the whole bull cross thing. I dont see the point in these big heavy things that arent fast enough to catch a rabbit. However bull blood does give that stronger frame to a dog for running bigger quarry (pre ban of coarse) such as fox and deer.

a lurcher is a grayhound crossed with any dog you can think off.bullcross lurchers i think is one off the best breeds of working lurcher for more bigger quarry than a rabbit as i think a whippet/grayhound is one of the best rabbitin dogs i can think off through experance 8)
