Hi everyone and thanks for your excellent web site.

I need advice, have decided on a whippet as the breed for us, have found a breeder but can't decide whether to get a boy or a girl!

Some of the books say boys are better and more affectionate wheras others say a bitch is just as soppy.

I am looking for a pet, I do not intend to breed or show or racing dog but would like it to respond to basic commands and be able to play catch and chase etc.

I'm sure this question has been asked before and any advice would be appreciated have also cosidered just choosing the dog because of it's traits not because of it's sex?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I like boys - but then again I've never had a girl so what do I know?

What I do know is don't bank on not wanting to race or show your dog/bitch - before long you'll be thinking 'if only I'd got . . ' and then before you know it you'll be getting a new friend for your first whippet to play with (w00t)

one is never enough with whippets :luck:

I too only have boys, two of them so can't advise about girls.

I agree- Definately...One is not enough!!! I am already thinking of getting # 3 (maybe a girl this time) not sure yet though. My boys are very cuddly and affectionate  It would be very interesting to see what would happen with a girl in the picture.

i have two girl whippets and also our molly the greyhound x,ive never had a male, not until sunday anyway, thats when we get our new pup.

im sure it doesnt matter what sex you get in the long run,be i can agree with everyone else ,one whippet is never enough.

I've only got one Whippet of each sex, both are very loving and affectionate. My dog, Frankie is much more loyal and wants to be around me ALL the time, he never leaves my side. My bitch, Holly, is much more independant. She is also a lot more active and mischievous :teehee: Both are lovely and it's nice that they are different and have their own personalities.

If you're not bothered about the sex of the pup, why don't you wait til you see the litter and see which individual takes your eye.

good luck with your new pup, whatever you decide :luck:

ps. i only lasted 2 months with just one whippet!!!

Boys tend to be easier and more loving than the girls  who most of them seem a bit stubborn and "on their terms only" ........but then saying that I now have a dog pup that I've bred and he's the hardest Whippet that I've ever owned (w00t) ........I knew I should have stuck to just Black boys lol ....... :luck: with what ever you decide, and we will need photos :D ......Hannah :)

Ive got 2 male whippets and love them to bits :huggles: , , and had a male previous to that also, and he was gorgeous too  but years ago I also had a little bitch, and she could be a proper little madam but much loved also  they all have different personalities .... its a personal choice, yours.

Good luck with what you decide. :luck: :luck:

I only have boy whippets and they are fabulous but i have a boxer bitch and if she's anything to go by then i say boys all the way.

Our boxer bitch is a complete mare and the name bitch suits her perfectly...its her way or the highway (w00t)

we've got a 15 month old bitch, she is the sweetest, patient, cuddliest little beauty you could ever want, she is no trouble, learnt basic tricks and loves to play, sleeps for England, like said before, if you're really not bothered just choose the one that takes your fancy :luck:

Hi, I only have bitches. Four Whippets and a terrier. My bitches are very loving. I have Frankie's sister and her and her mum are always at my side. The other two are older but also very affectionate. A bitch will come into season every 6 months or so. Go along with an open mind and I'm sure you will find that one pup just seems to be that "special" one.

what sex...boy or girl........I PREFER GIRLS THANK YOU LEGAL AGE THO !

got two boy whips, a few scuffles but they're spot on, mellow most of the time but they play hectic! never a dull moment (w00t)

Didn't I say he reminded me of Gelert? :- " :b

Are coursing-bred girls even worse than the boys then (w00t) :sweating:

Down-side to boy-whippets in particular - they do pee over themselves rather a lot :b

I think there are many different temperaments in Whippets. Best would be to go and visit the breeder to meet the parents of your puppy. It may not be a good time meeting the mum after she had her pups, my girls hate anybody coming near their babies, while in other times are very sweet and friendly with visitors.

At present i have 2 girls; Callista was an angel from the beginning, perfect on recall, walked pretty much in healing position from the first day i put a lead on her. Then I have Genevieve  , when i call her she looks at me and has a good think about it first, when we go for walk she pulls like a sled dog, after couple of kilometers walk my throat is sore from saying "heel". They are both sweet and cuddly, Callista is just 100x easier. :)

I have 2 male whippets 2 female whippets a male greyhound and a female irish setter (16 weeks)

I find the boys are much more affectionate than the girls who tend to be more independant. The boys have the odd scuffle but nothing serious and normally about bitches the girls are mother and daughter , the mother Tegan is very much miss idenpendant she does everything one her own terms and only if she wants to do it Rosie is although still more independant than the boys is for more affectionate than her mother but then we did breed her so she has been with us from day one

The greyhound loves people and ill do anything if mum's there although if I 'm not there her can be a pain although he accepts that I go to work and the setter is a typical 16 week setter pup loves to play and never seems to stop

Welcome to K9 :D

I have 3 girls and 1 boy all lovely and all different in personality, I find kane my boy is very laid back and goes along with anything (but that may be just him  ) doesn't mind getting wet and dirty, and is quite happy to follow the girls about.

The girls are all different Spry hates getting wet and dirty is very girly, callie is quiet and does he her own thing very independant and Sienna is Queen bee and is quite boyish in her ways I'd say.

I don't think you can go wrong whichever you choose, obviously there are the obvious points to consider bitches have seasons which can be a bit awkward routine wise for walking ect but so far I haven't had any major problems with that :)

Good luck which ever you choose :luck:

i have 3 boys and two girls

the two brothers are very affectionate and want to be sat 'on' you all the time, follow me round like sheep and look up at me adoringly, which is great for the ego but can be a bit much sometimes :D ...i put this down to them being dimmer than the girls

the other boy has been treated like a spoilt little princess all his life and acts like a diva most of the time, everything is amature dramatics with him, he pretends not to care whem i'm there but is inconsoulable when i leave

my girls are very loving and affectionate but very mischeivious with it, they have a stubborn streak in them and can, if any bloke walks in, be totally disloyal

they go completely gooey eyed .... tarts

Thanks for all the advice.

Regarding the boys has anyone had any experience of them displaying 'overt'

sexual behaviour like peeing inside the house and trying to 'mate' the furniture? :(

I'm not being funny or anything, just that we had a cocker spaniel before who had some problems and I wondered if it was likely to be a problem with a whippet dog!

Thanks

When boys (of any breed) come into puberty there is a huge sudden release of male hormons at that point they can become bit oversexed, especially if they come in contact with a bitch in season. He may pick up a scent of bitch in season in the street or park and get bit excited. But the hormon levels settle down and so does the dog. In the past I kept several males as well as females all in the house, without major dramas. The boys went out to the kennels if one of the girls was in season, they had their turn to have a run on the property several times a day, and carefully examined the messages left by the girls then went hapilly back into their kennels. No howling, climbing fences or eating through walls. Although I did hear of other people's dogs doing things like that.
