Sorry to be a pain but I would really appreciate your advice. My 7 week old whippet pup's breath smells very strongly of urine. My friend who owns Misha's sister tells me that Tabetha's breath is fine so I am rather concerned. I read that when dogs have breath like this it could be a sign of kidney problems so I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this with your pup or does it seem as though Misha could be a sick pup? :( she will visit the vet next week for her first innoculation so will obviously point this out to him but I would appreciate your thoughts.

To be perfectly honest if I suspected my seven week old pup may have a kidney problem i would be taking it to the vet as soon as possible and not waiting un til it's due for its inoculations.

At seven weeks old any problem can be serious and a pup can go down hill very quickly. You would probably be better to be safe than sorry and get your little dog to the vets.

good luck.

yep, i would say the same,

i would be straigh down to the vet,

if you wait till the inoculation and the vet finds somthing wrong they wont (shouldnt) inoculate the pup, so seems silly to wait.

definatly get down there asap

good luck :luck:

Please don't wait 'til next week - get the little mite down to the vet ASAP!

Puppy breath should be sweet smelling and any foul odour indicates a potential problem.

As a matter of interest, what diet is she on?

She Had Bakers complete to start with but didnt enjoy that alone too well so we now mix it with pedigree chum puppy (tinned) food and she seems to really enjoy that.

Thanks for your advice everyone, hubby said I was silly to worry as it was probably just a 'puppy thing' but I agree that her breath shouldnt be like that.

I think you would do well to stop feeding the Bakers as it is full of chemicals and additives and, at only 7 weeks old, her digestive system is not ready to cope with that sort of food. Her little kidneys will be working overtime just to try and offload all the bad stuff from her system :(

Here is a link to the K9 FAQ section on feeding - there are several threads on feeding a new puppy with lots of useful suggestions.

She will need 4 small meals a day at her age as her stomach is still tiny!! Tinned food is ok, but IMO not ideal as it is made up of large amounts of fluid with very little fibre. I have always fed mine raw meat (lamb mince etc) from puppyhood, adding bonemeal for calcium, and have never had any problems.

Have a read through the threads on feeding .......... there are lots of different opinions and you can decide which diet will suit your pup and your lifestyle

............. I still think you should get her to the vet quickly tho' :)

Thanks jinnyfizz, I'll read through that and change her diet. I'll call the vert tomorrow morning and get her checked out.

How long have you had her? 7 weeks is quite young to have left her mum. did the breeder give you a diet sheet with what she has been fed on? Have you phoned her breeder for advise? Don't change her diet suddenly as that can cause problems with diarrhoea. Do it gradually over a week or two.

Are you sure you are not talking about the strong "garlicky" smell that all healthy puppies have? It goes away after while.

Dogs with kidney problems have often bad breath, but I would not describe it as urine smell.

Just read this and urine breath,,never heard of a puppy smelling of this,,its normal puppy breath,,thats nice.

My advice is, are you feeding the pup the same as the breeder ?,,the pups diet has to be the same as it will upset the tummy.

If you are and the smell has changed since you got it,,then get vets advice over the phone if need be (they on call 24/7 ,,costs nothing for a phone call) and if it need to see a vet,,the cost is nothing as you know the pup is okay

I got my Robbie at 5 weeks old , as his mum licked his coat off,,Robbie was bald almost when I got him,,not that the breeder wanted rid of him  The vets advice if I had pups and knew what to do,,to let him come to me.Robbie is 100% okay ,,social wise and a nice pet. He did becoe a rch and nch at racing and a dad to quite a few nice pups.

Pups can go down hill fast,,so phone the vet asap,,for advice and I bet its because it ate something it should have not

Let us know what the cause was,,as Ive never known of a pup smelling of urine .

also, when you change the diet, do it gradually whether switching to another dry or wet - I think starting at 70% old 30% new.

no point asking the ''breeder'' since from previous posts I'd gather he couldn't care less about his pups.

Just wanted to say that I hope your puppy is ok, its so worrying when something doesn't seem right.

Also my mums dog has lived healthily and happily for 10 years on bakers complete so it can't be that bad

i know he's not a whippet but my black terrier was really picky and would only eat bakers chicken as a puppy and that is what the next pup got aswell, they were both healthy and fit, ive just got a lurcher pup who has arden grange puppy/junior and in a moment when i glanced away knicked a load of bakers, she was loose for 24 hours so i changed them over to skinners duck & rice - no additives gluten or colourings, their deposits are half the size and hardly smell my black boys coat is improved, they don't have wind and when the new pup nicks their food her tummys ok, if i didnt have the new pup they'd still be on bakers and doing ok but it is full of additives and fillers.

i hope your pups ok, i'm another one who should have shares in my local vets practice.

THESE TWO LITTLE ANGELS AT THE BOTTOM HAVE BEEN REARED ON BAKERS CHICKEN COMPLETE PUPPY AS WAS THEIR MUM BEING THE ONLY THING SHE WOULD EAT . NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS

Come on Lynnie, how is Micha? When is your appointment? :)

I'm so sorry for not replying to you all sooner, I've had internet problems for a few days. Thank you all so much for your concern and advice, it seems Misha is just fine :) I've discovered she is eating her 'poo' so just possibly she is drinking some urine too - what a lovely dog! lol. To be honest though, the vet I saw is one I really don't like so I have decided to take her again next week to a different practice and this time I will get her jab too if all is well.

Again, thank you so much for your help and concern, Misha and I both appreciate it very much.
