Whippets With Very Long Lives

I know that whippets on average live to around 15 years of age, however, i've met two people lately who have told me of owning whippets in the past who lived way beyond the expected time.

One lady said her whippet lived to 19 and another lady reckons her whippet lived to 24 - not sure if she was exaggerating or if her whippet had been switched at some stage (a bit like my parents done with my budgie when I was a kid) but it would be interesting to hear of any other whippets that lived/are living long enough to be due a telegramme from the queen.
 
Our first whippet, the amazing, graceful, wise and handsome Tucky, lived a very long life. :wub: :wub:

We rehomed him as a stray the weekend of my Mum's 40th birthday (14 January 1988) and he would have been 6 months to a year at that time. He was SUCH a naughty youngster :devil:

He passed away on 4 December 2004, just shy of 17 years later. So he was 17-18 years old when he died.

We were such a hopeless lot. Every Christmas morning for years before he died we all gave him loads of cuddles and kisses as we sat around the tree in case it was his last. He must have thought we were daft :lol:

He was on heart and arthritis medication for years, which I think kept him going. His heart was strong till the end and he never went senile, but the medication eventully made his organs give out.

a friend of mine had a brindle whippet girl named Lady that lived until she was 21 :wub:
 
This is my mums first whippet Bluey,she live untill she was 23 when she was PTS. This was in the 60's

According to the research that the kennel club did a couple of years ago the average age of a whippet is 11 years and 10 months ( I think anyhow) :blink: and the biggest cause of death was trauma ( eg road accident , hitting trees)

My Mayzee is going to live to 30 at least :luck: well shes over half way :cheers:
 
Many years ago I worked for a vet and one afternoon a client came in with his 20 year old whippet to be put to sleep :( She had a good life, was well loved and the owner was clearly distressed, but felt that it was 'time'. When the vet called him through the dog slipped her collar and bolted. She ran approximately 2 miles home and was sitting at the front door waiting for him when he got home :p He came to the conclusion that perhaps it wasn't her 'time' yet :teehee: and she went on very happily for another 2 years (w00t)

:D I'm glad I asked now......what lovely stories, especially the one about the whippet who ran home from the vets. Loved the pic of Bluey, what a lovely girl and what a ripe old age she lived to.

So.....looks like that lady may not of been exaggerating afterall - it's very encouraging and if I see her again i'll have to ask her for some tips. :))
 
think I know what the biggest tip from a whippet would be......'sleep as much as you can and conserve your energy' (w00t)
