Hello Russ,

The advice in this thread appears to be really good. We have had different breeds over the years including Great Dane and Doberman. I don't think we will have anything other than a whippet again.

We have a fawn boy (Zach) of 17 months and are collecting our second one (a blue bitch) in a couple of weeks.

The comments here are spot on, they are loving pets, easy to groom, have do discernable smell and thieves. I am sold on the breed but like some others they are lively puppies.

Having the right breed is of course part of the picture and training is important as you note in the original post.

I am convinced that early socialisation and reward based training is the key to having a well balanced and behaved dog. This means collecting the puppy early and starting socialisation with you, your family and as many people, experiences noises etc as possible given the pre-vaccination restrictions. Certainly no earlier than seven weeks but no later than twelve weeks. The period between 8 and 12 weeks is the critical socialisation phase for a puppy if you want a dog that bonds to you and is obedient the evidence suggests that will give you the best chance.

As a sighthound, whippets will naturally chase things. If you bond and train the puppy from the early stages you will maximise the chance of good recall etc. We did this with Zach and he can heel off the lead, and is 100% reliable on recall even when he is in a mad dash for something. You can take him to a carnival, or busy high street and he is unfazed.

Many people have achieved good results by training in other ways but all the current research points to early socialisation and reward based training. We found "clicker" training very good.

Hope that you get what you want and good luck

.

Is it wise to crate them when young until you know they are not destructive, obviously a large crate.
i would reccomend crating any pup..........its good for them to have their own space and also if you have to do bits and bobs around the house you can put pup in their crate and you know he/she is safe............also stops them trashing the house :- "

would you recommend the wire crate or the large plastic ones

Russ Welcome to K9.

Here is a link to some crates..I purchased mine from here. Personally I would go for a wire coated one.

http://www.doghealth.co.uk/choosedh.htm

Id only ever had one whippet, got one way back in the seventies, Lady and loved the breed. Got another one Chip when I got married ...he was 12 and half when he went to the Bridge. I got Oscar after joining K9 in 2004 and now I have three.. :) all males, never had any other breed, they are smashing dogs.

Like other people have said, some can be easy to housetrain, some a bit more difficult. One of mine likes destuffing cushions so be warned too... :- "

but I wouldnt be without them.. :huggles:

Wot sized crate would you suggest,is it big is best.

Well mine is a 42"..I would go for one that obviously will comfortably fit wherever you are planning to put it...and enough space for a bed and room to move around if you need to leave the puppy for any length of time. The biggest you can afford..

Some people on here dont use crates at all, but I have 3 cats and this is the path I followed to allow the pups and cats to get to know each other and their surroundings, plus at least you will know the puppy is safe from any harm when you go out, or when you go to bed. Peace of mind.

oops meant to say Id never used a crate before either till I got Oscar, it has proved invaluable...I wouldnt be without one now.

Does it become part of their normal bedding arrangements -_- or do you remove the crate when they get older. :)

My older dogs dont sleep in a crate at all now, so yes you can remove it as they get older if you so wish. Archie who is 8 months old sleeps only in his crate at night...

some people on here have even placed the crate in their own bedroom at night, at least till the pup settles in....but do prepare yourself .....it is very easy to let them into your own bed... :) ;)

May be preferable to the wife as she snores in my ear all night. :(
