It has to be historical and for a good reason....Come on you lot, some-one out there must have a clue!

I thought it was because they have lovely long neck's in which to be able to show the tassle off :D

I thought,,just becase they looked nice. Mine dont have them though

My only guess is that they might have helped keep flies away in desert hounds like salukis and sloughis... In modern, Western societies, I mostly think they look terribly silly

Mine had them but kept standing on them every time they put their heads down. They eventually pulled them of so I didn't bother again I don't know why they have them though just thought they looked nice

Yes yes yes! An excellent reply, go to the top of the class....unless some-one else has a better idea. I must admit, I noticed they do swish around to keep flies at bay. (OH won't walk mine with tassles on :( )

I thought it was just a fund raising idea for greyhound rescues!

Cerito

OK, what are Tassles???? Did I miss something. Anyone want to post a photo of their whippet wearing tassles?

Makes me wonder whether tassles were originally only used for VERY light-coloured dogs, much to the effect of a lamp shade...

Have you seen teh bag charms you can get Andrea? The collar tassles are sort of the same sort of thing.

Funny you should start this thread Joanna because I was thinking the same thing myself? I thought maybe they were worn in the 'olden' times whilst working!

I have a few myself and only use them for 'best' though!

I atchully was thinking of making some special ones myself and selling them, but from what some of you have said about tassels im unsure weather anyone would be interested?????

 I really hope I didn't offend anyone - it could also be a guy thing not to be too keen on the tassles. I've seen them offered on quite a few websites, though, so I'm pretty sure there are people that like them a lot better than I do.

Andrea I think if you go to the Colar thread on Gen Discussions Whippets - Im sure there a picture of someones gorgeous whippet wearing a nice tassle - I think they look good but probably only on girly dogs. Oscar definitely would probably chew his up and Kobi too come to think of it. :- "

Her is is I think its Jiminis dog Freya - hope so

Really, how dreadful. Mind you some people are so unkind they let their dogs shiver in the cold instead of getting them a nice warm coat :(
