Willow has gone through the op and is still feeling a bit groggy. The vet will be keeping her in over night for more pain relief. She should be fine to go home tomorrow.

Thank you all for your support and kind words throughout all this. Here's hoping things are on the up now!

For those of you that have been through this kind of thing:

What should I expect when I bring her home? How long will she be sore? When will she be fit for walks etc?

I've so many questions buzzing round my head right now!!

I have no experience of amputations but one of my old whippets got run over and had various problems with her hip coming out of place, the vet removed the ball from her socket and she was 3 legged for a good 4 months, before she started to used the leg again, within a week she was running around 3 legged post op, you would have thought she'd always been like that to look at her.

Good luck Willow xx

you've done what any good caring pet owner would've done, given her all the chances you could.

:luck: and lots of :huggles: to willow and yourself for the coming hard work, she'll adapt better than we would !

there was once a movie clip on here of a whippet in America with 2 legs on the same side amputated and you should have seen it running, amazing !

:huggles: :huggles:

Well done for trying so hard with Willow, and sorry the outcome was not better :(

I bet she will recover very quickly, and will soon be running around like she always had only 3 legs! :huggles:

I remember a large lurcher who used to lure course with only 3 legs (front leg removed) He was amazing!

I think that dogs come to terms with losing a leg much better than their owners do- they just seem to get on with life without a backward glance!

Hugs to Willow

its so sad that the op didnt work as well as wed all hoped it would. :( but you tried your best and you gave willow a chance which is what matters. dont beat yourself up about it,its not your fault, the vet tried and it just didnt work.willow will soon be up and around and will adapt to life with three legs, its just another part of life for her and shell adjust to it. :) hugs to you both and i say again,i wish all dog owners were as loving and caring as you.bless you :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

I agree with Kris.

me too . good luck with her :luck:

Only just read this.Sorry the original op didn't work, but better to decide to amputate now rather than 6 weeks down the line. At least you tried and have done your best for that little dog. I think it is amazing that you have homed her and I hope she rewards you with love and companionship for a very long time. As I have said before, we tend to humanise our pets but they just don't have our emotions and can't process thoughts like " How long will it take me to adjust without my leg?" Willow will be instinctive, and will get around fine in a short period of time. I bet you are going to be amazed by her progress and how well she adapts. Hope she heals well and is trundling around in a couple of days  :luck:

Hi Guys,

Willow is coming home this afternoon! :D

She came off the drip this morning and has been out for a small walk, with no trouble at all. The vet is really pleased with her progress.

The drain she has in is apparently dripping away the fluid, the vet says it will be over my floors - Thank goodness we have wooden floor and tiles instead of carpets.

I'm so looking forward to getting her home. I do hope the kids react well to her "new look", though so far they have been fine about the whole thing. I think I've prepared them well for it.

Glad to hear it's gone well and she's coming home. I agree with the others who've said if you hadn't tried it you'd always be second guessing yourself if you could have saved the leg. You've done everything I would have if it was one of mine.

Hope she continues to do well.

Wendy

good luck to willows future :luck:
