I took Willow to the vet today since she has been in more pain this last few days and putting no weight on the leg since she had the op with the external fixators.

They had a look and didn't seem to happy with progress so kept her in for x-ray. When I rang this evening they said that healing, once again, isn't going as they hoped and they will have to amputate the leg.

The vet sounded pretty gutted. He had worked on her for over three hours last week and said if only she had been brought to them sooner they could have saved the leg. (She had been a stray that someone took in and kept in their garage for a week before handing her over to the vets.)

She is well used to using only 3 legs at this stage, so should adapt well. I'm just so down. I was hesitant about the use of external fixators to begin with, due to her poor healing rate from her previous op on the leg - I had thought perhaps she should have had the leg off last week, but gave into giving the fixators ago. But now it's coming off anyway and she has suffered an extra week of pain.

I just hope she heals well after this op and she can get better and get on with life.

Sorry for the ramble, just needed to air my feelings. I'm sure I will have lots of questions in days/weeks to come.

aww evie lots of :huggles: :huggles: for you and willow and lot of :luck: :luck: for a speedy recovery :luck:

Don't feel bad about giving her another week. If you hadn't tried, you would always have wondered if you should have given it a chance. Its a shame it hasn't worked but you now know, for certain, that you tried everything to save her leg. She is a very lucky girl to have found you. Have a big hug. :huggles:

So sorry, that the news isn't as good as expected. Don't take it out on yourself about prolonging the treatment, I'm sure we would all have done the same if there was a chance of saving the leg. You have done everything possible for her.

Wishing you all the best and Willow a speedy recovery in the days ahead. :luck: :huggles: :luck:

So sorry about this :( - I can imagine how you must be feeling, but in a few weeks from now, her pain will be over and she will be running around brilliantly, I'm sure. I've seen so many 3 legged sighthounds in rescue that seem perfectly happy, and there is even an amazing short video of a TWO legged whippet in the USA which is seen racing around all over the place with no worries.

Good luck and lots of hugs to poor Willow. :huggles: :luck: :huggles: She has been through a lot, but she is lucky to have found you to love and care for her.

Gosh...you've been on an emotional roller coaster with Willow, your rescue dog. You're bound to feel down, but I think you deserve a medal. Sorry it's not the news you (and we) all hoped for.

Hope you feel better soon and let us know how Willow progresses. :huggles: :luck:

I'm so sorry to hear about Willow, but I would have given it a go as well.

Wishing you both lots of luck and Willow a quick recovery :luck:

Please don't feel bad, you gave Willow another chance, regretably it didn't work out but it could have done. I am sure she will cope very well.

You have given your all taking her on and in months to come i am sure you won't even notice the missing leg.

I can't imagine how you are feeling but please do feel proud of yourself for what you have done for Willow, well done you

We have a cat with three legs, she had a shattered leg and had to have it amputated, its amazing how quickly they adapt, she belts around jumps on fences she has incredible balance and still catches mice, the only thing she cant do is dig a hole for her toilet or cover it :b Which your little one wont have to worry about. Everything else she manages just fine.

I think you did the right thing giving her leg a go, at least youve done everything you could.

She'll soon be on the mend. Best of luck to Willow for a speedy recovery :luck:

Youve done your very best for Willow.

I do hope everything works out ok for you both - To Willow :huggles: and lots of luck for the op. :luck: :luck:

Thank you all for your kind words.

I will let you all know how it goes later today when I hear from the vet.

I do hope all goes well for Willow. :luck: :luck: :luck: :huggles: :huggles:

You have done so much for her, and at least you gave her the chance to keep her leg. I'm sure you would have regretted it if you hadn't tried. :huggles:

Poor Willow I hope she has a speedy recovery :luck: :huggles: to her and try not to worry

I can't really add to what the others have said. I also think you did the right thing giving her a chance as a four-legged girl and you have nothing to reproach yourself for :huggles:

:luck: to Willow

Good luck to you both you deserve it :huggles:

I echo what Keith said - you ramble all you want - it takes an incredibly strong and loving person to do what you are doing for this little pup. You've tried the best you could - I'm sorry that the outcome wasn't as hoped, but you are right - she'll be just fine!

:huggles: to you and Willow, :luck: for a speedy recovery

And the same from me hon xxx

Dogs seem to adapt very well to a life on 3 legs - in fact the biggest problem as far as i can see, is finding a forever home when you're not quite as cute as the dog in the next pen.

But willow doesn't have this problem does she? She's got you Evie - somone prepared to go the extra mile for her, someone who loves her for the doggie that she is and will see her through thick or thin.

Sounds like she's got it made to me

:luck: :luck: You've done all you can for her and she'll probably a be a lot more comfortable without it. :luck: :luck: :huggles:

Good luck Evie and Willow :huggles: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Totally agree with your post urchin
