If we want to get trials round the bends it's a 200 mile round trip for the likes of me and Bill & Bert & Jane Madgwick.

Our nearest bend track is Ockendon, through the Dartford Tunnel. You can't get any further South than us, you would have to go into the

sea, then you would be on your way to France. I have to give Bert all due credit, he has made the effort to trial his dogs week in and week out to get them ready for bend opens and bend championships.

Even if we go to the straight opens it is approx 120 miles before we get to a motorway, so I think the southerners show their enthusiasm

for whippet racing when they are prepared to do this , week after week. But because we love the sport so much we are prepared to do this.

Friggsy when you say they were the first from the south, how far south were they please?? some people on here don't realise just how far down we are, :angry: nearly two hours before we even hit the motorway., I've only got one dog to run not like others on here who might have up to 8/10 dogs to pick and choose there races so i think we haven't done too bad this year travelling.

We have NO bends tracks to practise on and if it wasn't for the kindness of Helston whippet club we wouldn't even be able to school our dogs from traps, (many thanks to Helston) :thumbsup:

You can't win the top ten points in any event unless you can afford to put the miles in, the time, and a bloody large bank balance, not forgetting what it does to your health sleeping in a van on cold, frosty nights, just ask Steve a very good subject, but some people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

A dog that's lives the lower side of the Tamar bridge will never win the top ten. :thumbsup:

Just like to reply to this we won the top ten with Ones Cushti's Star bless him he's sitting here beside me, but i always used to travel to most opens from portsmouth to scotland and i really loved it, i think the whippet top ten is the best thing i have ever won and it is an accolade to win it, dont know if i spelt it right, we have run against the top bitches in the country and they were brilliant bitches's, especially drama queen and biddy i really rated these bitches, but we worked hard with him and he loved it, he always gave us his all, i didnt have any other holidays or went out racing was my life Sue

@ the end of the day u cud go to every top ten open in the country but u have to WIN 2 gain points, i know people live miles down south but people also live miles up north in scotland. personally i think im quite lucky where i live as stockton/aycliffe/horden/dawdon r all within an hours drive but my dog still has to WIN to gain points so really i dont think it matters where u live well maybe a little bit but your dog still has to b good enuf 2 win 2 gain points therfore its still prestigious to get in the top ten IMO anyone know whose won the scratch and vets over the years?

I see what your saying sherry, and you are very lucky to live so close to all them tracks, but weather your dog is good enough to win or not you still wouldn't get the chance unless you've got a shofer a good vehicle and money, :lol: Next year will be a lot different for us now we've had a taste of the straights, :- i'm not giving up on racing and we won't be doing many of the bends this winter,(it's just not worth the risk traveling in bad weather. :thumbsup: di

That's just it, you could have opens on your doorstep, a driver, double decker bus and bottomless pit as a purse but you've still got to have a good dog to win with.

As I said on the inside of the front cover of the last book I wrote "even if I had the fastest dog in Britain I could only afford to travel to one or two opens a year" This is why people don't see Bally Boy only a few times a year. Since my last book came out I cannot either drive or attend the great distances it takes to go to any opens from near Bournemouth where I live. As Doreen says it is miles to even get a training run round the bends so regards bend racing my dogs over the last 15 years have never competed in bend racing. To enjoy a well attended open I think there are far too many. Perhaps fewer but bigger events would get more attendance and give more credence to the dogs wins

Have to say i too agree with you Audrey that there are possibly toooo many opens now, they are now the norm and not a special outing as they used to be henc i believe one of the contributions to lower attendances
