Brill pictures and super reading...that's what this message board ought to be all about. Amazing pics of the high jump...takes my breath away at how the dogs are able to do it. Does anyone have any videos out there of dogs competing at the high jump...wouldn't mind a copy of one just to see how it's done. You are spoilt for choice in the mainland with all the lurchers events that are run at the shows.
Used to have a lot of stuff from old blazes day's Darren ,and i had great footage of him setting the new Irish highjump record.Problim is ,a nephew borrowed these and his flat got burned down in Bushmill's and the lot went up in smoke.Over here, the dogs had to come down the other side without a platform, which was pretty dangerous,i have to say.Charlie Lowry who used to run the Downpatrick working lurcher n terrier Club, was the man who did all the video'in back then, mainly i think cause he was one of the only people who had a video camera back then.Anyway what happened there was this.Old George McClure,(before youre time)was reserve to me in the All Ireland Show Championship, which old Blaze won.The night after, old George's bitch was stolen,so he sent the police to Charlie for the tape of the show,so that they could see the dog they would be looking for.Charlie had other things on the tape too.To do with hunting things you shouldnt hunt, and killin things you shouldnt kill. When they found some of this on the tape, poor charlie got an early morning wakeup call one morning, and they took all the tapes that charlie had.He was to look up and see if that one had ever been returned, but i know he ended up inside for something so i never got a copy done.If you can contact him ,he might still have some old stuff.Another man who videoed stuff was wee Davy Dunlop, and they used to have a few good highjump dogs and i think he has these on tape.Hope this helps. ...Billy...

Geoff, that would be super with regards to the video and i promise i'll return it back...thanks.Keep those photo's coming along with the reports as it's excellent viewing and i'm sure inspiring for those to get their dogs in good condition for the lurcher showing season.

That's only if you can assure me that you've got smoke alarms fitted in your house :D

The light brindle bitch on the left is my Mona out of Sally collie x greyhound 2 Country Music, the brindle & white on the right was litter sister she was sold to a chap at Northamton who only worked his dogs, she took her first fox at 13months old. Mona went on to win the All Counties racing Championships, unfortunately I at to sell her because my wife was terminally ill with leukaemia

ourginny065.jpg

The bitch on the left was a collie greyhound x saluki greyhound, she could catch for fun, the fawn & white bitch on the right was a whippet greyhound saluki called Bess, she made a name for her self on the coursing scene

Hi Geoff, with all the talk about racing dogs and their breeding... remember Sky in 1992 when you said at Chatsworth that you could hear his muscles stretching when he ran?! He won the over 23in racing both days that year, he also won the All Counties title, UK championship, All England Bends championship, Cornish Champion (see photo) all in 1992... also at Chatsworth he won the hurdles in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996, also the long jump 1997. Sky was 3/4 greyhound 1/4 deerhound, over the years he won hundreds of titles and trophies, beating all the smooth coated greyhound/whippets. So when people say it takes a whippet/greyhound to win racing they should have a look at what Sky and his litter brother Stag achieved. Thanks for posting the photos Geoff, it brought back a lot of memories!! Sky lived till he was 12 and a half, before time and his heart gave out... still the best dog I ever had. Cheers Mike
Mike is that you with the famous dark glasses, your looking good 8)

Thanks for the pics and the trip down memory lane Geoff - long time no see - next time you are down you will have to visit us - remember Teagle (out of Mike's Holly) and Thyme (Bow and Penny). We retired after Chatsworth 95 - into whippets now - but when down, come over and see us. Karen

Hi Billy

A wee birdy told me this. (w00t)

The Irish High Jump record is held by a dog called Barney, the owner is Gary Kineer. It was at the Ballymena show 1987. The jump was 12ft. The bitch that came second that day was a dog called Tina, owned by Tony Jackson, it was disqualified by the judge. The dog caught the lure and apparently Terry Turk pulled it on over the jump.

I wasnt there to witness this, it was 3 years later when I came on the lurcher scene.

I think i remember this one Frankie, and if im right,it was the very 1st show i ever went to in my life.It was held at the dog pound, and the jump was set up between 2 wall's,or summit similar.Blazes mum was the only lurcher i had jumping at the time,as Blaze was only a pup,of around 3 month's.I gave it a go with Sprig, but she only went about 9ft.If my memory serves me right ,it was 11 feet,as no dog's cleared the next one .It was'nt till the following year at charlie lowry's show, that Blaze did 11ft 6 inches, and it was there that he was declared as the holder of the high jump record. Was'nt me who declared that, but the people at the show, who said it was a new record. As that was the winning jump, they would'nt go any higher. He could have went at least another foot,as he did the last one with ease. There is a video of Blazes jumping as proof,so i would like to see the other evidence,if it exist's.As it stand's Blaze is as far as i know, the only one with the evidence on camera. If the record was 12ft,then i certainly would have chalenged that, but as it was the winning jump, and i was told by all there, that it was a new record, then i called it a day. This is one of my treasured memories,Frankie, and im keeping it. ...Billy...
