Im sure she will heal quickly :luck:

There was a huge blood vessel all exposed and how she didn't tear that open I don't know. Luckily she didn't or she'd have exsanguinated before I got her to the vet :(
I guess that's it. I have one whippet who can be trusted off the lead in any situation, and another whippet who will just have to spend the rest of her life leaded :( I feel very sad about that because there's nothing better than to watch them running free and chasing each other around the field.

Oh no  it's bad enough with even a tiny tear, seeing even a small amount of torn skin can be sickening, but injuries of this extent must have been horrible, for both you and her. I worry about blood vessels too. :(

It may have been barbed wire, but muntjac have tusks and will readily use them to defend themselves; we have seen other whippets with scars like a patchwork quilt as a result of muntjac encounters. You have my deepest sympathies; I too have one who is a reborn deerhound, and can't go to some of our favourite woody spots now as there are just too many around (usually in places near the railway or roads too, just incase the threat from horn, hoof and tusk wasn't enough).

Good suggestion about playing fields. I'm also trying to find coursing substitutes for our dog. We take him to the greyhound track to give him a run, as he misses his regular bunnying trips and this seems to fill the gap for him. She might enjoy lurecoursing too. I think they enjoy the strategy side of it as much as the running.

Hope she comes out of the anaesthetic ok, and that the soreness is bearable for her. :luck: :huggles:

Oh Helen, Im so sorry to hear about poor Josie, having been through something similar with Jack a few years ago, I totally sympathise :( , I think finding a safe park etc would be great as its devestating to keep a dog on a lead that loves to run free, big hugs for Josie from all of us :huggles: :luck:

Poor Josie :( I hope she makes a swift recovery :luck: :luck: :huggles:

Before we left Norfolk my boy Folly was quite badly bitten by a Deer. I knew what it was because I could see the teeth marks!

Sorry helen that Josies been injured badly. Hope she's soon on the road to recovery. :luck: :huggles:

About the only drawback with whippies, unfortunately they can damage themselves so easily :( Every time we come back from a run, I check Annie all over for scratches and bruises, I usually find one or 2.

Oh dear ! Loads of hugs :huggles: to you and Josie.

Mine dont even have to go outside sometimes Mandy :( ... one day I only popped out for 1/2 hour to have my hair cut and came back and Oscar had a wound on his side. God knows how he did it , but fortunately I was able to treat it myself this time and its practically healed up now.

Good Luck Helen with Josie. :luck: :luck:

Just a quick message to say she's home and mostly sutured up, although the front wound is at risk of breaking down because of movement :( She's going back in tomorrow to have the dressings changed and have more pain relief. She's in a lot of pain and singing, so I can't leave her for long. Update when I can, and thanks so much for all your well wishes :huggles:

Poor love :huggles: I do hope she has a comfortable night, its worse than looking after children at times. :luck:

oh dear,poor Josie,& poor you! :(

It's a bugger when they can't be trusted off lead, isn't it?

My Poppy is a swine for going off hunting, the only place i can safely let her off lead, other than an enclosed field, is down the beach, where she just runs forever!!! :D

Hope Josie's better soon :huggles:

OMG Helen what a terrible shock that must have been. The relief of seeing her coming back and then discovering her injuries.

:luck: & :huggles: to Josie for her recovery.

Like Jo I can empathise completely as I cant let Leia off her lead at all in the woods anymore. I have seen enough to last me a life time, and the feeling of not knowing where your dog is and if you'll see her again........not for me.

I've tried, but I've only to take my eye off her for a minute, to throw a frisbee for example, and she's gone.

So she stays on her lead once a day, and once or twice a day we drive to a park/field/football pitch so that she can have a free run. Like you it's crazy as we are opposite woods  Anyway, since I have been doing this her general recall has improved so although I'm sad that she'll never run free in the woods, I know she is safe and is still happy.

If a deer did do that to her I'm not sure if it would be a deterrent, as Leia had a horrible injury once, caused by an antler or a stick we dont know, and it certainly hasnt put her off.

Hope she starts to feel better soon.

In that case Alfyn send Poppy to me, I'll follow her anywhere :p  :- "

Let's hope that Josie will get some rest tonight and heal quickly. Poor girl, we should all send out some healing thoughts for her and help to ease her pain.

Get well soon Josie! hug.gif

harley had an accident with a barbwire fence not long before we got him and his scar is healed beautiful and the hair is growing again, and im sure the same will happen with josie,

best of luck

Oh poor poor Josie, lots and lots of very gentle love and hugs to her. I hope that you both got some sleep last night. :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Hope Josie had as comfortable night as poss Helen, there must be something in the air just lately yesterday Andy took he dogs to the woods yeasterday and Callie and Sienna thought it would be a good idea to bugger off,for about an hour  :sweating: he rang me and I went up to search too, I was worried that something bad had happened to them but they came back to us eventually unscathed and looking very guilty :sweating: so on lead for them now, Sienna does tend to do her own thing but it is very unusual for Callie, the only plus side to this is that Andy caught a Rottweiller just about to attack a sheep and stopped it in it's tracks he told the owners what had happened and said it should be on a lead and they said, "yeah I know,"

He couldn't go into it too much considering we had just been searching for ours for an hour  :b but that made it even worse that sheep could have been one of them, I tell you those dogs will be the death of me :sweating:

I know :( ; even if your dog is ok, the deer may not be. The mother of a friend of ours has finally had to move house as she couldn't cope with her lurcher seriously maiming deer. She called her vet out to have 2 pts (which was an awkward issue I think); a local farmer offered to deal with the next few. The lurcher suffered many huge tears as well. It's an increasing problem as deer populations are growing and spreading closer to more urban areas too.

eeeee those naughty girls Lesley,.... glad they are both safe and sound though now. ....... I was thinking thank goodness Andy caught that dog, yours may have been blamed for a sheep attack . (w00t) now theres a thought.

and Helen - hope Josie is feeling a bit better.

Hi, thanks everyone :huggles:

Josie had a very sad night, she was obviously in a lot of pain and whining pretty much all the time. She slept with me and OH, and even with us stroking her she was a very unhappy girl. She's been a bit brighter today, and has just had some more painkillers so that should mean a better night.

The vet changed the dressing on the front leg wound this evening and I must say I was so impressed with her suturing skills! She's done the most amazing job, managed to salvage a lot of skin and embroider it all back together. I'm really pleased because we're new patients, having just moved out here, and I didn't really know her. It all looks very tight, but quite healthy at the moment. Josie is all strapped up again, she's eating and drinking a little bit, but still has to have a wee yet  although they said she didn't have much of a bladder so not to worry about that too much.

Today has been quite a traumatic day. I'm having such a run of bad luck.

We had rain in the night, and this morning I managed to skid off the road, hit a traffic island, narrowly miss a skip lorry, rebound, mount the pavement, and plough into a hedge :b Thank heavens no one else was involved, and I was only going about 20mph so it could all have been a lot worse.

After last week's dog bite and tetanus jab, my cat at death's door the week before last (diabetic crisis and a possible stroke), and last week someone driving into OH's pride and joy classic sports car... I'm really hoping our luck is going to change
