right, gypsy hates having her nails done, we have now got to the point where we cant even hold her to do it ourselves and have to take her to alovely lady who is a proper dog groomer..........she is great, but everytime we take her she is worse.............today it has taken so long to get them done and she was so so stressed out, i hate to see her like that but they need doing!

i am now dreading the next time she goes as it seems to get worse everytime...........any advice guys ?

our phoebe is the same,we now take them all to the park let them have a good run a round then graham does phoebes nails before we go home ,she still struggles like hell but shes not as feisty cause weve tired her out a bit, though still takes a good 30mins to get the job done :sweating:

we have tried that trish :(

in fact i think we have tried just about everything :(

might just just to give her a bottle of trac's gin before we go next time :- "

Have you tried valerian liquid from Dorwest Herbs? Or a light sedative from the vet. My greyhound has to go to the vets to have her nails cut. She is put on the table and he just clips away, on the floor she is a nightmare and we can't hold her. On the table I think she is so surprised to be picked up and plonked down she just behaves herself! :- "

What annoys me is she was fine to begin with, she was never hurt and suddenly she decided this was not something she wanted to do.

im just not sure which way to go with this................but i know that next time, she is going to be even worse...........she is up stairs hiding and wont come near me at the mo :(

she has never been hurt while having them done so i really dont know why she has got like this :(

she wont even let me touch her nails now even if she is sleeping, she wakes up and moves

dont know if youv tried, but i do ruby and stars when they are sleeping, if they wake up i stop and wait till they dose of again, dont know if it only works cause they are just wee at the min, but maybe worth a try if youv not tried it :b

tried and failed :(

thanks katie :)

you could try a grinder - many say this is sucessfull - although I haven't tried it myself

with our gsd - who is pertified at the sight of the nail clippers, I have now got it to 5 mins, the key is to calm everything down, breath very steadily hold the paw as firmly as possible and treat every so often we use dried liver we did this each day for two weeks and it did the trick. some days we got no nails done others only one or two. make it a short session and treat with whatever she likes. Our tess now sees the nails clippers coming out and whilst she still doesn't like it and will go straight to her bed she knows they have to be done so with the treats comes, sits and give her paw to start, she occasionally will pulls away but it's now down to 5 mins.

My other problem was the more my OH was involved the worse she was, cause he tried to comfort her " it's alright, there there and all that" just sent her into a blind panic. I take the nonsense approach very matter of fact and she's been much better - he leaves the room!!

Little and often is the key!

Hope it helps

Liz

i bought a grinder and to say 6 of mine are fine with having their nails cut they all legged it as soon as i switched then blooming thing on  (w00t)

Oh dear, she really doesnt like it does she :( Im afraid I dont really have any advice, we give Dudley a chunky treat to tuck into, he does pull his paw away but sits still otherwise... that seems to work for us but dont think it would for Gypsy. I hope you find a solution xxx

Fred was exactly the same as Gypsy...in the end my local pet shop owner would clip his nails whilst I held him (Fred that is :- " ). I'd still get scratched with the struggling.

When Roy became ill for a while I was stuck. I reluctantly bought a dremel (I was really dubious Fred would accept this), but somehow Fred seems to have got used to this and now accepts his nails being done. I'm not sure how i eventually won him round, but as soon as he quietened down once the dremel made contact, I'd feed him a biscuit. He eventually got the idea. Now it's nowhere near as much trouble now.

thanks for the replys guys

we have tried the no nonsense approach..........we have tried the nicey nicey approach..........she's just a little bugger

the lady we go to has tried filing them (as have i) with the same reaction

havent tried a dremel  but if i am right in thinking it makes a noise, i wont hold out to much hope..........she hates anything that is noisey

i have ordered some valerian liquid from Dorwest Herbs so will see if this helps............i just hate seeing her freaked out :(

thanks for the replys guys

out of all mine, grace hates it but only the front feet

i make a point of doing them every week

but will she lay with you and let you file them down with a nail file?

just do a couple of nails at a time so as not to stress her out to much.....

i have to get dad to hold grace up for me, she is getting better slowly

i have tried to file them.......i was sat doing my own nails and she was curled up beside me..........she didnt stay there long though............she legged it upstairs when i started to do one of her nails

i am thinking im just gonna have to be firm and just carry on as we are with me and OH holding her while the groomer cuts them.............she's just gonna have to get used to the fact that are going to be done!

awful mum i am :(

All mine act differently whent he clippers come out..

Oscar shakes a bit...but will let me do them and isnt too bad considering.....

Kobi runs away as soon as he sees the clippers, but his nails dont grow nearly as fast as the other two does. Anyway once I start clipping hes not too bad either...

Archie is a right wimp and yelps...even before I cut the nail... (w00t)

he struggles a bit too but I pin him between my legs...

Sounds like Gypsy is not too keen at all... Good luck... :luck: I know nail clipping time is sometimes a real pain.

Jinny is the same as Gypsy (w00t) NIGHTMARE

Now, we have found 2 ways of doing her claws .............

The first way is to borrow Becka Abbot (beaker) but, as she lives in Lancashire, she may not want to travel down to you :- " However, you could try her method yourself.

Sit on the settee with your legs up on it and lay Gypsy on her back in between your legs with her head nearest your feet. You can access all four paws easily from this position and your OH can restrain her head whilst you hold her with your legs.

However, whilst this is easy for Becka it didn't work for me (although I did manage to do her hind claws in this way) :( so OH and I devised another method for the front feet ..............

Both OH and you on the settee with Gypsy sitting in between you. No fuss, no conversation! OH should hold one front leg at a time very firmly and you should clip a small amount (no point in trying to take them right back to the quick as you won't have time  ). This worked for us as Jinny couldn't pull back as I was pretty much on top of her with my arms either side of her neck reaching for the paw whilst OH held the leg, one hand under her elbow and one holding the paw out.

This is also how our vet managed to take her stitches out when she had her dew claw removed so it may just work for Gypsy too  I do hope so

:luck: :luck: Good luck, Hely  :)
