Further has anyone any idea how many dogs were injured that Sunday? What percentage it was?

:) Not a lot if my spies are to be believed! Three that I know of at present. But we can collect numbers until the cows come home, there are so many variables involved in the race that it is very difficult to determine what contributes to an injury level. Sadly we have not collated this information over the years, although long term racers may have views of their own.

Do we use the best, stongest lines for breeding programmes? Or just the flavour of the month/year? Is it to do with lines who have a prediliction for foot/cartilage/muscle injury? Is the injury level to do with how the pups are reared when sent to their new homes? Does free running the pup/young dog/adult dog make them stronger/weaker or even better able to withstand the rigours of the track? Should we insist that all dogs must be over 2 years of age before entering competition bend racing in order to minimise the risk of injury when young? And that is before one even gets to climatic conditions which affect the ground. Not to mention Lady Luck!!

On a personal level I have no objections to bend running, but it could be made safer for the dogs. We could insist that all dogs have run at least one year of bends at club level prior to competition racing, this information should be included on their passport, we could move the bends to the beginning and end of the racing season- when the ground is softer. But I bet you that we could do all that, and STILL have dogs injured because I have a sneaking feeling that some of this is to do with the way we manage our dogs. What I would not like to see is bend racing stopped, but constructive help and advice given to owners to better prepare the dogs for the rigours of the bend race. :luck:

i can,t understand why you run straights and bends mixed anyway as surely this would confuse the dogs, this is why i think we stop straights then train them back up to the bends for the season starting, we run on the greyhound tracks also and have not heard of many injuries, i must say that running on sand must be much safer for the dogs

debbie

surely you could hire a greyhound stadium like us non-peds

Pay out money??????? Excuse me while I go for a lie-down in a dark room!

It's well known we are a bunch of tight wads!

Running on a sand greyhound track would be much, much safer, but I doubt that members would pay the additional premiums required. Having said THAT - I have no idea what a stadium would charge for a days racing, I just assume it would be more in keeping with a commercial operation and therefore out of reach of us amateurs. :)

I hadn't realised that Open bends had fallen off so much until BJ posted that - although I think Stanborough still host TWO bend Opens - it certainly makes you think, doesn't it?

hi can anyone tell me the webite for the company that took photos at the champs please

My runner skinnid three feet badley! Maybe we all should go to the next wrac meeting!! :(

Cost normally about £200 ...but if you charge a entrance fee to people depending on how many people are attending it normally covers the cost of the hire of the stadium..i personally haven't raced a whippet around the bends for a couple of years, due to a very bad accident one of our none peds had, and theres no way i would ever consider running a whippet around a grass bend track with or without a sand pit finish in high summer months when the ground is rock hard.

I have to agree with Debbie about mixing bend and straight racing this may confuse your racing dogs.

If you need to know more about the hire of bend tracks Ive got some information/ prices and phone numbers just pm me.

okay ive had my 2 pennys worth too

That's really inexpensive............I personally think the fees for running dogs in Opens is very reasonable. It is entirely feasable that for Champs bend racing, competitors would be prepared to pay an extra couple of quid for such a fabulous venue....

I think it's a fab idea for the bends........

How many people ,dogs do you get attending bend champs approximately ?

How many would you get attending a normal bend open ?

And what venue do you run yard a pound or time ?

Just a thought but what if you could arrange a small few ped whippets to get a few heats together and ask one of our none ped associations holding a bend event if you could run with this event just to see how it goes

Just come back from holiday, and thankfully there are some sensible replies amongst the nasty stuff!!!

Smiffy, I'm not sure how many injuries there were, but my Sweep (Mighty Mouse), has incurred the same injury as he did last June Champs, but a different toe. I think he will be off racing for some time, as he was last year. As you can probably guess, we are so mad with ourselves for letting him run when the ground was so hard. Last year he ended up having to lose the last joint of his toe (which has healed brilliantly!), but it's now looking like the same might have to happen with another toe, depending on how things are at his check up a week Monday. You have to draw a line somewhere - how many more toes can he afford to lose? :(

Next to us at the Champs, Slim Shady lost a whole nail, leaving the nail bed and bone exposed. Then next to them, a lovely bitch I admire so much, Light Fantastic injured a toe, which I'm sad to say looked much like Sweeps injury (collateral ligament) - I desperately hope hers heals better - so sad, as she was looking like winning her first half coat. I haven't heard how she is, but I wish her the best.

Unless we were sitting in an unlucky area, that's three dogs injured in three adjoining cars parked - so I imagine there must have been others.

The idea of everyone getting their clubs to write and suggest bend racing in April and September would seem like a good one. Also I would be willing to listen to the idea of running bends on sand tracks - I have heard people for it, and also people against it, but not having tried it myself, I really don't know. It would certainly seem sensible to try it - and I for one, Steve also, would hate to see the end of pedigree bend racing.

Does anyone else know of any injuries at the Champs?
