Your post is spot on Becka, and so sad about Gyp :(

I'm sure there will be another black on the end of your showlead some day......

I have not had whippets as long as a lot of people on here only 11 years i bred a black dog because i always wante one from my fawn Poaching bitch,he has not been shown a lot and i think he has improved with age he is 5 now and looks lovely. I hope to do a bit of showing with him this year andif hes placed i shall be happy if he isnt well i always take the best dog home and most importantly i love him to bits. Its every ones choice what colour they like.

Badger is my new hero.... What a fantastic dog. If Roscoe turns out to be half what Badger is, I'll be very very happy. Thanks TC for talking sense!

Is your handsome blue lad called Rystone Blue Magpie. Have just checked my whippet bitch's pedigree certificate because her breeder and I were only corresponding recently and Wild and Lonely's name came up she was going to send me a picture of him but couldn't find one so if this is Jazz's Great Great Grand Father I now know I have a picture of him, which means just as much.

Also staying on the subject of blues, they always seem to be snapped up first in litter, I know because I have been window shopping for a year now and finally got my little blue bitch Kadie!

Regards Donna.

No, Blue Magpie lived in the 80's. My blue now is called Bali Hi of Rystone and is on the archives. Sadly Pye has none of my breeding behind him.

There should be no colour preference in the ring, sadly I know from experience there is. I have been breeding blues since 1975, registerd my affix in 1973, been involved with whippets since the late 50's. Here is a photo of my championship show winning blue boy, you can win with blues, it is hard though. One of my dogs sired this country's only blue champion, Martinsell Wild and Lonely. Bertha,

Sorry to keep on, think Jazz's certificate is wrong. My interest picked up when Martinsell Wild and Lonely was mentioned because he was my bitch's Great Great Grandfather, but on my Pedigree Certificate it says he was sired by Rystone Blue Magpie, I'm confused, it doesn't take much, can you throw any light on the matter.

Donna.

If all what a person wants to do is to get a dog, take it into a ring and come home with a rosette, then they need to go to one of the presently winning breeders. These people should not be looking for pup on basis of colour.

The black and blues need dedicated people who are realistic about what can be achieved, and knowledgeble enough to know how to go about improving their lines. Thankfully, people now know that they do not need to breed black to blue or black to get coloured pups, so they breed their coloured bitches to brindle or fawn dogs to fix the awful fronts that were so ingrained in the coloured lines. And the improvement is better than I would have dared to hope for. But to progress the breeder has to keep the best blue or black from each litter

At this rate, in no time at all, nobody will have to ask if the blacks and blues are discriminated against :)

(w00t) Oh I just love your boy TC!

I agree with you, a whippet should be able to do what it was bred for originally! My girl that just had the pups shows, races and hunts! I am hoping with having only 4 blacks in this litter I get a very good show prospect.

I am glad for you that your boys excels so much! He is just devine!

I am very proud that my dogs are duel purpose whippets :))

I am very strict on what I keep or would breed from! Temperment is something that is very important to me. Though I will willingly say I have some very dear friends who have bred whippets for years and bred very good dogs that have been kind enough to help me with my pups and making sure I am hopefully keeping the best from this litter

Thanks for the nice comments about Badge everyone. Esty - He's my hero too in case you hadn't noticed (w00t) 8) :-

He's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but lets face it, which dog is? At the end of the day he has been everything I've wanted in a whippet so far and that's what counts. He has the ability to do well in the ring, on the track, and in the field and that's what I wanted. As my website (which is in DIRE need of updating :b ) says, that coupled with the fact that he is black with a little white makes him the perfect addition to my pack.

As Becka and Seraphina have said, we need breeders to continue to breed for colour or we will still be having this debate in years to come.

I suppose it's easy for us who love the blacks and blues to wonder why judges might not like them so much. The trouble is I can stand here hand on heart and say I really don't like the heavily striped black brindles. I can admire them for the dogs they are, and I can certainly see past their colour to the way they are made underneath it, but I would not chose to own one because they don't actually do anything for me. Ruso is as dark as I go when it comes to black brindling, yet my OH would kill for a dog as dark and heavily striped as his dam!

Noise - Working against Showing bred...now that's a whole other debate :p

I am not sure if liking or disliking has anything to do with it. Ideally judge should be able to be colour blind when judging Whippets, but when they have several dogs of pretty much the same quality I think most allbreed judges will make a safe choice of a dog that they have seen winning = brindle/fawn parti :) So it is bit of a vicious circle. We need to get the coloured dogs in the ring so they stop being a rarity :)

Sorry Seraphina,

I was just talking generally to show that everyone has favourites and if it goes to the wire then colour will come into it. I totally agree, ideally judges should be colour blind...personally I don't think they all are. I think you're spot on with the bit about *safe* choices as well (stopping now or I WILL get in trouble lol)

as much as we'd like we can't forget that judges are just people and having preferences is just inevitable. some are very strict on height, now if you had a dog at say 4 cm over the standard, surely you wouldn't enter under a judge who's very strict about height, you wouldn't pay 22 quid and travel to the other end of the country to be overlooked. fortunately or not, a part of a dog's success is knowing which judges to pick. so if there is a judge who overlooks blues and blacks then surely there must be some out there who in fact prefer them

:) Thing is when youre new to showing, how do you know which judge to pick? I just enter Vinnie at the moment and dont even look at the judges names cos I probably wouldnt know who they were anyway. Whether he gets a place or not its the experience that we need :D :b

Lonely was sired by my Blue Magpie!

You cannot just breed for colour, you will lose bone and type. Pat Salter of the Velocity whippets bred blacks and ended up with whippets lacking bone ans substance. You breed for the best, regardless of colour. I didn't actually breed for colour, my very last litter were by a fawn out of a blue, I got a blue and white, two fawn and whites and three blues!

Keep a show record...and don't go under a judge whe doesn't like your dog...other than that, just go for it, have fun, gain experience and take the best dog home with you at the end...whether they are fawn Brindle Black, blue or sky-blue pink with spots on!!!

Judge should ignore colour when judging. I personally don't like some brindles, but, when judging you place the dog not the colour. Hence when I judged the Midland whippet ch show, I gave a brindle to dog CC, IMO he was the best on the day. That is how it should be, but as TC says, better keep quiet now!!!!! :ermm:

i find it very sad that we have novices asking what judge to show under so they get a result and season showers as much as admitting all's not straight and square

I am very sorry but...............I don't agree that blues are discriminated against. If they are good enough they win. Black is harder because they really do vanish into the background and can be overlooked by a judge almost by accident, shouldn't happen but it does. Hey there are worse goings on in the show ring. Also a novice can win with a blue........I did

I started in the breed with blues and only blues and I won plenty. My first show bitch won a CC and a RCC, my second 2CCs, my first home bred blue had a thick pile of red cards including a couple from Crufts. Gay's point was interesting about reasons for choosing a puppy. I wanted a blue foundation bitch to show and I waited a hell of a time for her, she was fourth pick but probably ended up as the most prolific winner of the litter. She was also Best in Field lure coursing, and produced me a Crufts Best of Breed and the dam of another Crufts BOB, and she was with us until she was 17 years old. A lot more than I ever expected when I picked up my little Georgie  from Wendy Lowe (Ousebank)

You can see plenty of pictures of my blues on my website....click below and NEVER think you can't do well because you are a novice or have the wrong colour dog.

Good Luck to all blues in all their endeavours.

Cathie

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure there would not have been so many good blues around without Ch Martinsell Wild and Lonely, my pack go back to Selbrook Blue Print, who had he not died young I am sure he wold have been made up. He started me off in blues, a beautiful dog.

I don't know the UK judges either, but don't think it matters much at open shows, I take Eskil so we get the experience and he gets used to all the hassle, I'm waiting til he's onw to enter a champ.

and yeah, I also note them down for reference.
