Please help!

I am thinking of adopting a whippet, im absolutely in love with the breed. The only concern i have is that i currently own a cat (2 yrs of age). Can whippets & cats live in harmony? I really want to make the right decision for our cat, & potentially adopting a wonderful dog like the whippet. I would be so grateful of advice on this matter.

:- " all i can say is our darling whippy princess phoebe HATES CATS in a big way i think most whippys dont like cats unless they have been brought up with them so is the whippy yr thinking of getting a puppy? if so you may have a chance if not then id say noooooooooooooooooooooooo lol whippys see small furry things as something to grab hold of and raggy doll round the neck lol gd luck

Hi

I have just adopted my first whippet puppy (who is an absolute darling - you are definitely going in for the right breed!)

I also have a 17 year old cat and 2 chihuahua's. I have had Pax for about 10 days now and they are all learning to live together very well. Being a 10 week old puppy he wants to play a lot and I just have to keep a close eye when he and the cat are together.

They have sniffed each other and sit together but if Pax looks like he wants to play I distract him with a toy. Dylan is a very laid back old cat and takes it all in his stride. I think the key is finding a puppy that has been well socialised and is confident and calm. Hope you have lots of luck. :luck:

:) Hello and welcome to K9.

Our whippet Jesse is our first dog - and I must say you have picked the best breed! When we first got Jesse he was just over 8 weeks old, and we had an old cat called TC who was 16.

We never once encountered any problems with the pair (except the odd couple of hisses from the cat) (w00t) I think that if they are introduced to each other properly from the beginning, then the dog will grow to realise the cat is part of the household and not a play-thing :- "

Jesse is now 9 and a half, and has to this day never been interested in cats, squirrels or anything like that! :) I think so long as you get a puppy and train them from the start, you should be fine.

Hope this has been of some help,

Emma and Jesse

xXx

Many thanks for the advice. I have not yet got a particular whippet in mind, but i think i would choose a puppy, due to my daughter being only 3 yrs old, so i would like the new addition to be raised and used to my child. If i do adopt a puppy, hopefully it would get along with molly (my cat), but i'm scared i might put my cat in danger, which would be so irresponsible of me. I'm going to have a long, hard think about this, & hopefully come to the right decision. I just think whippets are wonderful!

I had the same worry as I have a very gentle and laid back cat who is now six years old. I chose to get a puppy (Rita), and have had her for two weeks now, so it is still early days of course. But while Rita has been a quite a handful in many ways, she has been very good with the cat. They peer at each other and have licked each other, and there has been no aggression or boisterous behaviour, so I can feel in my bones that it will be fine. I think if you are calm and firm with both together they get the message very quickly. Obviously leaving them together unsupervised is not on the cards yet, mainly because (surprisingly) I think it is the puppy who would get harmed rather than the cat.

Also should add that in many ways whippets are like cats, so clean in their habit and very different to the Westie I had in the past.

I had 2 race bred whippets (who were very good on the track and hunting) that were 8 months and just over 9 months when my daughter brought home a kitten she had found put into a plastic bag in a dumpster. They never touched her, they even let her sleep and eat with them! (w00t) though i will say, they didn't touch her but would kill any cat that they seen other than her in the yard  they can get along but remember just because the pup will like your cat it doesn't mean that it will like anyone elses.....

My whippets and greyhounds are fine with my cat.He is semi feral and adopted us 8 years ago. He comes round for food and also goes to the neighbours for food. He occasionally comes into the house and my whippets learnt early on that he had a set of vicious knives hidden in his paws. He appeared no long after we had our first whippet so has always known them .

My whippets do not bother him when he his in the house but would do if he ventured in to the back garden he never comes to the back door only ever the front and never goes into the back garden as that is the dog terroritory.

We will be getting our first wippet puppy in 3ish weeks, we have 6year old 2 cats a nearly 4 year old daughter and a 2and a half year old son. when i originaly said about getting a dog i wanted a rescue but my OH said no due to the fact we had small kids and cats, so thats why we went for a puppy. I have done a little research into cats and whippets and it seems to me if you can find a pup that has been born into a hosehold with cats it should be fine with yours. our pup is not coming from a cat enviroment so we have pulled out the old stair gate and are getting a crate for the pup, so that we can slowly introduce them to each other in a supervised and calm way. and the crate should be a big help so that at night the pup can sleep in there and there should be no trouble from the cats if they are in the house. so if you are still considering it in 4 weeks time i will let you know how we get on :sweating:

Hi and Welcome to K9. Whippets are just the best...

Just to let you know I also have 3 cats here and 3 whippets...occasionally there are little scuffles but on the whole everyone gets along well. :huggles: I would start off with a crate....that way the puppy would get used to your cats without causing them any distress at first and gradually introduce them.

Good luck.. :luck: :luck:

my whippets adore my cats but do hate ones they dont know as long as they are supervised properly you should have no problems

I got my whippet pup when I had two cats (sadly one now passed away). The cats were old and I was concerned they wouldn't get along but whilst I can't say they are best of friends they do tolerate each other, my cat is now nearly 18, and they often lay together in the sunshine and both sleep in the kitchen at night without any problems.

With regard to other cats outside my house, well that is a different matter all together (w00t) He will go mad and try and chase any cat he sees outside. I think when you get a whippet you have to be prepared for the fact that most will chase ANYTHING small that moves ie. rabbits, squirrels, ducks, geese, birds, weasels. When he is out in the woods my dog is just a little hunting machine!!!

ditto

................but my two are in love!

Hi,

I had two Whippets that loved cats, and one who hated them.I think its the same with all dogs.At least if you are adopting you can have the Whippet cat tested.Good luck.

i have a large pack of whippets iggies and lurchers here , all whom live with 2 cats , 1 tilly very old and still as nasty as hell , the other cant be arsed to move (w00t) but if they cant get in house at night they sleep out in the kennels with the dogs, however there is a cat across the road whom my dogs HATE and is pushing its luck big time, its walking along the top of the dog gardens fence tormenting the life out of mine , im certain they would rip that to tiny pieces!!! i certainly dont trust any of mine with any other cats bar our own , with correct training they can all live very happily together

good luck and keep us informed on the puppy front!!! :huggles:

Thank you all so much with your advice. I have loved reading (& in some cases, the wonderful photos), every one of the messages sent. I do feel now more confident that in my circumstances, that i would be doing the right thing in introducing a whippet into our family (i think they have just the most wonderful nature).

I am so glad i joined this web site. Thank you all again for your terrific advice. Julie

When I got my first whippet puppy, then 3 more over time I had a cat she told them how it was from day one, but last year she died she was 14.

I would be dubious about introducing cat now I dont think they would leave it alone, not in a nasty way because they are used to a cat but they would just torment it to death o:)

So my advice would be with a puppy it should be ok but with a fully grown rescue I'd think twice

Sometimes rescues check to see if the dogs they have are cat friendly so it might be worth asking
