I dont post that often but do love looking at this site but I very much enjoy all your lovely pictures and stories. Every time I see whippets looking for homes I think wouldnt it be nice for Lucy to have a furry friend to cuddle up to in the evening but I know realistically that another dog would be too much to take on right now. BUT I am SO broody right now. Seeing Dee Dee with her new little kitten brother, I thought maybe that might be something to think about. We already have a cat in the house but she has no time for Lucy. She is old and sleeps most of the day, Lucy sometimes tries to initiate play with her but she is having none of it. I have always had cats and always admired the Burmese. I would love to hear about how your whippets and cats get on. And would especially love to hear from anyone that has a whippet and a burmese cat living together.

Who was there first the cat or the dog? How did you find introducing them? Any problems you have had or basically anything you would like to share about the relationship your dog and cat have with each other. As always photos are most welcome.

Thanks

Thats a tough question...

We had a cat first Tinker, when we got married then got a whippet Chip..they got on great. :huggles:

Sadly we lost Tinker aged 10 years suddeny, then introduced another kitten which we still have now Meeko...he is 10 now too..

Then after Chip sadly went to the Bridge, introduced a puppy Oscar then another kitten Mitch...then another whippet Kobi...then another cat Sooty (who belonged to my sister) then puppy Archie....so introductions all around here...

They sometimes have there moments ...but generally the cats are the boss. and they quite often snuggle up together ... :huggles:

I got a kitten when Archie wa a pup as my old cat died. I thought if I didn't introduce a cat immediately it might be harder as my dog got older, it was no problem. I have subsequentely had another dog from a pup who gives the cat hell, but basically, they get on very well and tolerate each other. If it is very cold, they sometmes let the cat cuddle up to them.

Poor little Noah  Mental Brian

(w00t) They are such funny photos!! I bet the whippets stay well clear of Bossy Brian!

Here's Gus, taking over one of the dog's beds (w00t)

He has his "don't mess with me" expression on

Gus arrived this summer, with his suitcase, and moved in uninvited

He thinks he's a whippet - which could be his downfall as he likes to join

them in the garden. Not clever

One of these days I'll get a picture of Gus scrambling up the

fence to try and escape a baying pack of 6 whippets on his

tail (w00t) (w00t) (w00t)

I grew up with a collie x , he was around 12yrs when I got my first whippet,,,The collie x (Rudie)hated cats,,,

I got a small kitten from my work (used to work on a farm)

Rudie was fine when I bought Codie (kitten ) home, till Codie,,mewod,,,all hell broke loose (w00t) ,,,my finger bled for days  ,,,kitten's have sharp teeth.

Rudie, never got near the kitten , thank god , but Sindy (whippet)loved him

Over the weeks Rudie looked at Codie like a dog, Sindy still loved him

When Siindy ran over glass and could not race a guy at the club gave me an open class whippet lass for nothing :huggles: her name was Whisky (Fancy Whisky)

I brought her home, and forgot about the cat,,she took to him right away (w00t) thank god  ,,Whisky was 2yrs old at the time, never seen a cat close up and I was told by her former owner,,,she hated cats :teehee:

To this day I think the cat thought he was a dog

They can get on .

Right now my boy's would not accept a cat in the house, but If I bought a kitten,,,maybe, just maybe

OK I know he's not a whippet but this is my cat Gizmo pinching William's dinner. Gizmo is semi feral and rarely comes into the house but sometimes he does and when he does this is what he does

I always have 2 cats and have brought puppies and 2 rescued adult whippets and an adult lurcher home with no real problems . My lurcher did chase the cats at first but it was simple chasing with no intent to kill . My cats and dogs don't have much interaction except for my poodle pup who humps my male cat and he lets her (w00t)

We have 6 cats just now 4 permanent residents and 2 lodgers (w00t) Our lot have always gotten along well, thank goodness :sweating: :) It's important you set the firm ground rules for the whippets... like no chasing and pouncing when they're first introduced. Later once they have a 'family' bond they'll develop their own relationship. Some of our cat's like a good game of tag and some won't even entertain them but they all have a place in the pack.... the cats are always top dog tho'. We have free range chickens too and the dogs have learnt not to chase them either.

The 'kitten' Meg (she's 1 1/2 now!) thinks ruby is her mum...

and she's always hanging out with them...

I had Megan and Holly before I got Haggis the kitten. Both my dogs have fab natures so I knew they would be ok with a kitten, I breed rabbits and guinea pigs so both have learnt from a very early age that they dont chase, bite ect small furries.

When the kitten arrived I introduced him and the dogs instantly accepted him. I had a large cage I put him in when I wasnt around just in case of any accidents. The only problem I had was Megan would carry him around like a toy and when told to put him down she would just open her mouth and let him fall out.

Now Haggis is fully grown him and Megan are best pals. Holly got him told when little and he treats her with respect were as Megan he hides behind doors and jumps on her when she passes. They play all the time and all curl up together. In fact I dont think Haggis realises he is a cat as he came to me far to young, under 6 weeks so has been reared by the two dogs.

He also sleeps as much as Megan so they have that in common to

There are some fabulous photos on this thread....... :teehee:

Gypsy hates cats......and my sister has just got 2 kittens..............so there goes my dog sitter

do you think its possible for her to start liking them..........or is it to late ?

Until we moved here we always had cats with our whippets. the whipps were okay with ours, but did not like strange cats and would chase them.

They all lived happily together, sharing beds and baskets.

I also brought dogs in, puppies that is, they soon learnt that you don't mess with cats, they are spikey. (w00t)
