sending lots of :* and :huggles: and :luck: to you all, Ella for the pain and to heal up soon, you to get over the shock and Jinny coz she's feeling left out !

Thank you for all your support and well wishes :) It makes it much easier when there are others who understand how it feels! Here's a quick update for everyone :)

Ella is much improved and back to her normal self which is proving awkward as she is bandaged up to the elbow and has to keep her leg straight (w00t) ....... not something Ella is very good at I'm afraid :sweating:

She is allowed out with a plastic bag over the bandage but she has to stay on a lead in order to avoid too much activity :- "

She has to see the vet again on Monday morning to have the dressing changed so until then I have a 24/7 job making sure she doesn't chew it off  They did give me an elizabethan collar for her, but her neck is nearly the same circumference as her head and it's got no chance of staying on - one wriggle and she's out of it  The stitches come out on Christmas Eve so it's lucky I'm on leave now as she is going to need watching all the time.

Thanks again guys, will let you know the outcome!!

Only just seen this- poor Ella :( :huggles:

Hope she is feeling more comfortable soon :huggles:

It's been an extremely stressful 4 days for poor little Ella :(

She had a post op check up on Monday and the vet (a different one to the vet who did the op) decided that the full leg bandage should stay on in order to prevent too much movement in the area of the cut.

The wound was looking a little weepy so she cleaned the leg up and re-dressed it.

Another visit was booked for Wednesday and during the time between the two, poor Ella was continuously biting at her leg and seemed obsessed with it.

On Wednesday, the vet who had initially treated her and stitched up the wound was on duty. I couldn't believe how young she was and after examining the wound - which was not looking good - she said she was taking Ella to have it re-dressed. When I said I would carry her down, she muttered something about checking to see if the nurse was there and disappeared for a while. I could hear her talking to a man and it sounded as though she was asking for advice

When she came back, she brought a nurse with her and the wound was dressed with a superficial melolin pad and a bit of adhesive bandage to hold it in place.

As it was obvious that the wound was weeping and infected, I requested another course of antibiotics for Ella as she had been given Clavaseptin after the op which is primarily indicated for periodontal disease in dogs and I don't have much confidence in it for barbed wire wounds (w00t)

The vet wasn't enthusiastic about this but did give me another 4 days worth of Baytril (a bit better).

It was after returning from this check up yesterday that Ella became very poorly :(

As soon as she got home she was continually trying to get at the wound in a completely obsessive manner. It wasn't normal behaviour at all. By this morning she had got the dressing off despite us taking it in turns to watch over her (think we fell asleep for half an hour or so). The wound was a mess so I re-dressed it and she finally slept. By this afternoon her gums were nearly white and she was obviously very poorly.

So back to the vets again - yet another different vet - and this time I demanded some strong and appropriate antibiotics and some painkillers.

At last! Got a result!!! This vet agreed the wound was infected and that Ella was suffering from shock caused by pain

I got her home, gave her Rimadyl and within an hour she was eating and had regained her colour and sparkle. She's not 100% but at least it's going the right was now :sweating:

Can you believe the ignorance of these vets???? A human being would never be expected to undergo a GA and stitches without post op pain relief and yet they sent Ella home with nothing (w00t) I blame myself for not asking on Monday but you do expect the professionals to know best and Ella is a tough cookie and doesn't complain :huggles:

Of course, the vets are trying to say that the wound is infected because Ella licked it last night. I think it's highly unlikely because it was weeping on Monday and Wednesday and I'm sure it wouldn't have become so badly infected in the space of a couple of hours this morning??

Anyway, she's alot more comfortable tonight and we're back to the vet again tomorrow morning - oh, joy

Ohhh poor Ella, what a terrible time she's having. Hope she heals up quickly now, big hugs :huggles:

poor Ella, i hope her leg is better soon,

Otis was bandaged up to the elbow for three weeks last month, he had stitches and his dressings were changed every 3 days by the vet nurse but 9 times out of 10 i had to re do them myself as they had done them far too tight and his leg was swelling making him go banana's

hope ickle Ella is fine soon

:*

Hi,

one of my whippies recently cut his leg in two places and one of the cuts became infected as soon as the stitches came out, I got Active Manuka honey on it, not only did the hole close (stitches didn't hole it together) up in 3 days, both wounds are now totally healed. You can get this from WWW. the honeydoctor.com, it comes in a cream form which is much easier to use. We did put a collar on him, didn't like it at first but soon got use to it, we put a bandage through the collar and tried it so he couldn't get it off.

I hope this is of use to you, but the honey made a great difference.

Jenny :luck:
