OMG - once again disaster has struck :(

My husband was at home today but I was away all day :( Somehow, Ella managed to cut her front left leg while she was rooting around outside - only a tiny cut but it severed the main vein and it had to be stitched under anaesthetic.

My husband is not very knowledgeable about animals and cannot explain to me exactly what has happened but, from what I can understand, the vet told him that they didn't do repair surgery on veins and they just 'tied it off' (w00t)

Poor Ella has her leg all strapped up really tight to stop the normal flow of blood into her leg as it has not got a vein to exit by until the other smaller veins take over the job of the larger vein which was damaged?????????

This just doesn't seem right to me (the vet never even bothered to ask what was planned for Ella's future) and I don't particularly trust the practice as they have alot of young vets - one of which was responsible today apparently.

Bottom line is Ella appears to be in considerable distress. The anaesthetic is only just wearing off and as she is becoming more concious she is panicking and seems very fearful :( :( She is 'moaning' alot too. I've never had this with a dog before.

I can't stand seeing her like this. Does anyone have any experience of this sort of injury and does what the vet has done sound correct???

It's all just so upsetting and I don't want the girls to sense I'm upset when really I want to just cry :( :(

Oh Jane Im so sorry, and poor little Ella.. :huggles: I havnt any advice Im afraid...only Id ring the vet up if I was worried about anything.

I do hope she is ok ... :( I can imagine you are worried sick. :huggles:

Oh, I'm sorry - how awful for you and your husband - I'd get on the phone to the vet and see what they have to say - :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: for all of you

OH JANE..SO SORRY TO HEAR THIS...SUCH A WORRY AREN'T THEY? SENDING HUGS :huggles: :huggles: REALLY HOPE ELLA IS OK BABE :luck: :luck:

:( Poor you and poor little Ella. I would get back onto the vets if you are at all concerned. She may well just be distressed following her stay at the vets and the anaesthetic, possibly still a bit disorientated. My dog had stitches under anaesthetic and was very wobbly and nervous coming out of it.

As for the mechanics of the injury, arteries pump blood from the heart and veins back to the heart. Presumably the surgery that was done was to close off a vein that was beyond repair, diverting the blood to other veins which then take over the job? I'm not sure but seems similar to techniques used in bypass surgery in humans?

:luck: :luck: to Ella :huggles:

Awwww, thanks guys :) :huggles: :huggles:

She's awake and has had a small drink of warm milk and honey but not interested in eating any chicken yet.

Lal - you've made me come back to my senses again  I agree, it's normal procedure with a badly damaged vein. I think I am just over-reacting 'cos I love them both so much

Funny how it doesn't upset me if the horses come back from racing with cuts etc - I just get on with sorting it out. Maybe it's because I wasn't here when Ella got hurt and I don't feel in control of the situation??

I'm going to take her for a pee now - poor ickle girlie hasn't been since she hurt herself and it seems that was before lunch (w00t)

Its these men Jane, they dont look after them properley...

My hubby almost lost one of mine one night, while he had them out.... he admitted he darnt come home with one missing ... :D  he was gone rather a long time...I was starting to wonder where theyd gone...

Poor Ella :( she may be showing signs of distress because of the after effects of the anaesthetic, but just to be on the safe side I would ring the vets to ask advice.

Hope she is back to normal very soon :luck: :huggles:  :huggles:

I agree, I always feel more in control if I've been there and been a part of everything. I think the horses are always a bit more stoical, racing injuries being a part of life and generally occurring when adrenalin is high and endorphins kick in as natural painkillers. I always found the injuries with the racehorses far easier to deal with than anything I've encountered with Rifle!!

Hope she makes a good recovery, stiff drink in order I think? (for you not Ella!) :huggles:

Bit better now. She didn't want to pee - just stood with her tail between her legs looking terrified so I brought her back in as she was getting cold and after a GA I don't want her losing body heat.

I've given her permission to pee in the house  And she's got wind too (w00t)

She seems calmer now - washing herself, which is normally a good sign (well, it is with a cat :- " ).

Jinny is giving the daggers look because Ella is getting all the attention :(
