Hi

I have recently got another Whippet - he is a 2yr male he has come from a breeder (x-show dog) and seems to be a bit shy of running! I am also having some conflict from my resident female 1.5 yrs old. I have two questions that I am hoping someone can shed some light on.

1) I can't tell if they are fighting or playing - he has been at home with us for just over two weeks. In the first few days my female mounted him, which I know is a dominance display - she has stopped doing that, but now she nips at his throat and growls at him with her hackles up, then she runs off and he chase's her until he gets her and then they rear up a bash bodies with some snarling and nips, then the chase starts again. This usually happens when I throw the ball, or I am just around in the garden, I can't tell if they are resource guarding (ie me) or just kind of playing in a half serious fashion. Just to add - there has been no blood or actual skin penetration.

2) My second question is do Whippets forget how to play?. If I take my female and my new dog to the park - my female run's around at top speed playing with other dogs either chasing or being chased by them. My new male just trots around doing his own thing, I actually have to try quite hard to get him to run, once he is going he seems to have a good time, but he slows down and stops quite quickly. I have had he checked by the vet and there is nothing wrong with him. I am a little confused because I have never met a Whippet who didn’t live to run.

Thanks to all.

hiya,

I remember when we first got Leia how mch of a change it was to the house - Star & Leia play exactly as you have described and it's just for fun. She is probably being a bit ott with him just so he knows his place - Leia sometimes has hackles when she plays with Star but they both adore chasing each other around. If they were fightig it would be different, and I presume they get o OK in the house? I wouldnt worry. As for him not running - either he just has never done it before  or he's ot ready to leave you and run just yet. I'm sre it will come with time once he is more settled.

have you got any piccies?

My lot play around like that the whole time. I wouldnt worry.

When I first got Nana she was very reluctant to leave my side. She had been a stray, then in a dog pound, then in a foster homes where she wasn't let off the lead. Now she runs around like a nutter with the rest of them.

GOOD LUCK :luck: :luck:

mine too, they can be very boisterous, which i have to calm them down sometimes, apart from that they are noisy when they play,so wouldnt worry ,sounds normal.

Max was also a bit clingy when we got him (aged approx 1). He soon learnt to go a hunting wabbits :b

my tribe are same, viszla can get whole head of whippets in her mouth (w00t) she thinks its great! And then she cleans them. When they play they do get snappy and boiserous but as soon as one yelps,i play too rough ,they stop and check each other out. Then they cuddle big group hug style :huggles:

It sounds to me like she's flirting a bit with him as well as playing. They are just getting to know each other and sorting things out nicely.

As for your dog not running around. Could be that he's staying with you for security. But one of mine just trots around by my side unless he sees a squirrel or a collie :b . Some dogs just don't see the point of running around unless there is summat to chase like a ball. It's odd though that he isn't keeping his bitch closer to him. Probably is more that he isn't that sure of his environment yet and then he'll go off and play.

Good luck with your dogs :luck: :luck: Im sure things will sort themselves in time - hope so - fingers crossed. :huggles:

Some of mine run more than others BUT my two foreigners, especially TJ, don't really run for fun like the rest of mine because I don't think they had the opportunity as babies to learn to do it. Django, who came over at 10 months is slightly better, but he always sees running with the others as some sort of competition and wants to course and then tag. TJ is, I think, just plain bone idle and very, very seldom gallops. When I took him lure coursing I really thought he was not going to run because he just stands and shows no interest or emotion but he did and he is actually quite good at it surprisingly!!! But out on a walk he just mooches along eating as much sh*t as he can find.

Emilie will either stay by my side like a limpet or she gets ultra excited and courses the others making them scream and avoid her like the plague (w00t) . I carry a ball on a rope now and continually throw it to distract her and eventually wear her out.

In the house she is very subdued most of the time giving way to the others.

She eats lots fo S**t too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it a french delicacy do you think or the fact that she is permeantly ravernous :D

Inca plays like that with Dippy and is very noisy when they play. She will play like that with my parent springer but not with any other dog.

When out on a walk she can be very submissive with other dogs and will walk at my side to feel safe.

Don't worry, I think he's just finding his feet,

Lovely :x

if i'm not ultra vigilent, my two help themselves to little nuggets of joy from the litter tray :x

Sounds as though they are having fun , BUT , I would be a lttle cautious when you throw your ball as they might fight for it , :( plus it does get them very excited too

As for not knowing how to run , im afraid some show people dont let there dogs off lead at all  ( which IMO I think is cruel as they are RUNNING dogs ) So it sounds as though he wasnt given the opportuantaly to use his legs for which he was bred . I do know of a couple of kennels where they darnt let them off at all as they just dont come back

Good luck with them both :luck:

My Billy is 9yrs old doesnt see the point of running if i throw a ball for him he looks at the ball looks at me as if to say you go get it and walks off! :D   :D

Ellie on the other hand throw her a ball and shes off like a rocket! One of the many reasons we got her and love her for. :huggles:

That sounds the exact same as how my 2 play when my mum visits she panics and thinks there hurting but there not they just play to rough which can cause probs when they are out cos blue plays to rough with other ppls unless i warn him before he takes off.

Blue won't run either unless he is very hyper ie not bn off lead for a few days or unless i take a squeaky toy out they he runs for ages, but if he doesnt have something in his mouth he doesn't see the point in running lazy sod really.

I have a Whippet who is not much of a runner. I've had him since a pup and he's had a lot of off lead activity. He just can't be bothered! Of course if there's a rabbit or roo  to chase, he's off.

One thing I noticed that seemed to turn him off running, was other dogs chasing him. I use to take him to a paddock with other dogs who would love to chase him. He could outrun them, but couldn't outlast them. When he wanted to stop they all hounded him. So, he stopped running in that environment, and now doesn't bother much running anywhere.

I have to say i have the same problem, in the house they play fight, i know its not to hard cause Tilly just mouths bean and they race around like loonies

But outside Tilly has taken to running really fast at Bean bashing into her, so much so Bean now hides behine my legs when she sees her coming

And If i dont get between them Tilly will get her head under Beans belly and throw her over and then hold her by the throat, till bean crys.... :(

Is Tilly showing her whos boss or are they really fighting?
