Hi - is anyone able to suggest a fix for a problem my little 3 month old pup has developed ....?

I've just returned from a short trip to the local post office. Had just finished walking round the fields, so I thought it would be good practice to take Jinny as she is an extremely bad traveller and I am trying to force myself to take her in the car to help get her used to it .... BIG MISTAKE!!!!

It's only 2 miles up the lane to the village but by the time we arrived she had already been sick. While I was in the PO she was sick again and on the way back she poo'd and threw up the remainder of her stomach contents.

The sickness would not be such an issue if she was a good eater, but, needless to say, she is sooooooo fussy it is virtually impossible to find something she will eat!

So we have a problem....

I worry about her weight (approx 6kg at the moment) and growth because she doesn't have a good appetite.

What little she does eat comes back up if she travels in the car (I've never travelled her after eating for at least 6 hours but she still throws it all up, but I can't keep starving her)

It appears she also worries so much in the car that she is losing control of her bowel too (not normal for her)

In addition to this, it breaks my heart to see her salivating and drooling and to listen to her heartrending cries of 'pleeeease, let me out of here'!

She has done this from when we first picked her up, the only time when she managed to reach a destination (9 miles away) was when I tried half a Sealegs tablet, but she still threw up on the way back an hour later and I can't keep dosing her up as one of the side-effects of these anti-emetics is dehydration and she's only a baby!

I have tried having her on my lap with someone else driving, I have tried her on the front seat, I have tried her on the back seat with my other dog for comfort and security. I now have her in a crate (mainly to contain the mess).

I've also tried ginger biscuit (she won't eat it).

So far she has only had 8 trips in the car but somehow I have to either get her used to travelling or get her to eat properly to replace the loss because the idea is that she comes with me when I go out.

I am hoping someone may have a solution or an idea I haven't already tried as I'm at my wits end right now!!!!

Fingers crossed ...... thank you!

ive had pups that was constantly sick in the car until our vet advised us to start with putting the pup in the car dont drive just stand her in for about 30 seconds then take the pup out again repeat about 3 times a day for 2 days then on the 3rd day take the pup for a short trip to the end of the street which im talking about a minute and repeat this again 3 times a day, then slowly build up the journey time and hopefully it should work,it worked for us so worth a try.good luck with jinny. :luck: :luck: :luck:

I agree with Trish, all of mine set off on little 2 minute journeys to the shop and the park and they're all excellent travellers. I think taking them the park particularly works well because they're being rewarded with a run around.

Hi - there are quite a few tips and old threads about this in the FAQ section. I'll see if I can find the links

yup - here you go: FAQ - car sickness

There ar elots of other topics which you might find helpful too, so the forum there might be worth a browse ;)

one of my pups lolly...she is 4 half months, HATES the car

she is sick :x and dribbles like a boxer   and crys :(

the best thing is to travel them as much as possible

lolly goes in the car every day for 20 minutes to the yard, and on weekend she comes racing, so can be in the car for hours

she is caged in the car and the cage is covered over apart from the front so she can see me :huggles:

she has stopped crying and is not often sick  and the dribble is improving

stick with it, but id say cage her and cover it so the world is not wizzing by at speed

good luck

Weve had our little Archie (Hes 14 weeks old now) in the car a few times now and he seems fine ...like is dad my Oscar who is great too.

but Kobi who is now 2 years old...is terrible in the car still.....gets about 3 miles and pukes :x ....we only really travel when we want to go for some different walks... someone on K9 suggested trying DAP spray and I think this may be mentioned in the link that Helen has put on for you hopefully.

I keep meaning to try this myself.

Thank you for the suggestions - I shall certainly try the standing in the car for 30 seconds and building up. Also covering up the crate seems like a sensible idea!

Will update any progress.

I hope Jinny doesn't follow Kobi's example ..... must be a nightmare getting anywhere with him!

Liked the idea of trips ending in a 'treat' but I'm on a farm so going in the car for walks doesn't appeal to my gang because they're spoilt for choice at home. The beach would be nice but that's an hour's drive away from me.

Anyway.......... I'll start the 'car confidence course' tomorrow - here's hoping it'll work.

(May also try DAP spray .... gotta find some first!!)

aww what a gorgeous picture.... :huggles:

Sealegs, from the chemist.

Give 1 an hour before travelling.

Only thing ever worked for mine.

Some very good suggestions. I had some really bad travelers now and then, and i can guarantee the slow introduction does work in the end. One of mine took 18 months, but was perfectly fine after that. One thing to remember is that looking out of the window sideways makes motion sickness worse - in people as well as dogs. So crating the dog and covering the crate on all sides except front facing one is helpful. Also further in the back the dog is positioned in the car more likely it will feel sick. I found junket tablets also helpful, given an hour before trip. None of the above is sure thing to stop them being sick, but they do reduce the severity, delay the onset etc.

One of my dogs suffering badly from travel sickness was also bad eater, she grew out of both. I have to watch her weight now. :)

I found grating bit of cheese on her food got her to eat. Also do not leave food around. Offer it, leave for 10 minutes and take it away, try again 4-5 hours late etc. As she is so sick in car, she probably has a sensitive stomach so i would feed her some easy digestible food for a while. And try to feed her 3 meals a day. If you are not ar home in midday, do morning, as soon as possible in the afternoon and again late at night. Once you get her to eat properly, I think you will find that her carsickness will also improve.

By the way she does not look skin and bones to me in the photo

aww jinnys lovely, takes me back to when my black was little  :huggles:

good luck :luck: :luck: :luck

i had the same problem with my girl poor eater not putting on any weight and a terrible traveller i have since found out from her breeder that none of her whippets do very well on wheat based dried food so i have now got her on the pedigree breeders range performance and she looks better than ever it is expensive £35 a bag but you dont have to feed very much i couldnt even get her to eat the recommended amount on the bag and she looks fab .My little girl was also what i thought was fussy but in actual fact i wasnt helping ,try to offer food little and often and take it away after 20 mins they soon realise it has to be eaten I also had to give my baby 1 whole sealeg tablet on an empty stomach and then fed her an hour before traveling gradually weaning her off untill i got her on a quarter of a pill if you are worried about dehydration buy some electrolytes and put them in a drinks bottle i then squirt a few drops of this down her as well as offering water whippets can be funny little people about drinking i know i hope this helps a bit try not to worry im sure you are doing fine :huggles: also sealegs are supposed to last 24hrs so i only give 1 max on any one journey but im sure you could try half on the way there and half on the way back its just trial and error GOOD LUCK :luck: :luck:
