shellfish start their life as an agg the hatch and swim round the sea as little organism's with other plancton, then after while they grow their shells,when they grow bigger they shed there old shells (a bit like a snake shedding it's skin) underneath the old shell is a newone which is quite soft, which hardens and that cycle continues the larger shell that you see are quite old some being nearly fifty years old it's a long process for them to get to the size we see on the beach.
